Nice surprise. &mdash 05/27/07 - 11:50:11 PM
When I opened this up I expected some kind of bullshit ultra-patriotic folk song. As soon as I heard the vocals I realized this was something else entirely. Both from an artistic perspective and a socio/political/personal perspective I thank you for doing something different. I am in the military and have come to dislike overt signs of patriotism. I'm ashamed of a lot of things my country has done, and I feel like patriotism is just a way of saying that whatever my country does is the right thing and has been ordained by God. But I do think it's important to remember those in the military who have seen - and been affected by - way more action than I will ever see. Thank you for having some integrity with this song. Sad! &mdash 05/28/07 - 09:23:24 AM
YOu know at first I read RPG as role playing game and then I realized you mean rocket propelled grenade...
with that said I admire how you leave space for the listener to infer the emotions [ Reply to This ]
. &mdash 05/28/07 - 03:03:22 PM
i'd forgotten about that alternate meaning for the TLA RPG... i should have been more explicit in my set up.
i do believe it's best to let the listener bring their viewpoint to a song (or a poem as well) - for some folks, it won't click, but for the folks where it does - it's much more powerful...
thanks!

This is so weird and electronic... &mdash 05/28/07 - 02:33:56 PM
...especially the vocal...that it has absolutely no business getting under the skin and into the heart the way it does...
Sad, sad, sad.
On the technical end, how did you do the guitar sound? Is that you playing from a keyboard? An altered loop? A real guitar? I love the sound...

the vocal started from experiments with the Speech synthesis on the Mac. it's the cello synth playing a text file with carefully arranged punctuation and spelling... i recorded it by using a cable to wire the audio output back into the audio input and recording it into GB. i needed to adjust the spacing of the phrases quite a bit within GB from there.
i love the contrast of a mechanical voice with an emotional subject. i guess it got you too! it's a good way to parallel how people sometimes need to isolate something that's too strong for them to deal with directly. this song would not have have worked the same with a real human voice i suspect.
the guitar is the Clean Electric Guitar synth in GarageBand2, used with liberal amounts of pitch bending. i used to play guitar a lot, so i'm familiar with some licks and what's possible to play on guitar - but here, it's all keyboard and bending.

Very cool piece Smokey &mdash 05/28/07 - 07:14:10 PM
I know how hard it is to get the mac speech thing to work. Great job. What really struck me about the music production is how musch I was reminded of some od Ry Cooder's collabs - especially Ali Farka Toure. There's a griot vibe to your playing here. Extremely cool. Well done - I like this a lot. [ Reply to This ]
. &mdash 05/28/07 - 07:34:54 PM
i know you know... thanks
how do you get the speech synth back into a recorder? i used a wire (gasp!). there must be a software to software approach... (would something like wiretap do this? so i can ripoff my own stuff!!!)
the Apple Cello speech synth sings Pyr Gynt (i think that's the name) - give it try! - the whole melody here runs in through the first few notes of that theme... (i'm laughing to myself about this - it's bizarre)

if you don't already have - you should get it - it's a great tool.

Ry Cooder - yes, i have been influenced by him i guess - he's done some "out there" stuff - here, i suspect it's the slide guitar? [ Reply to This ]

is beautiful. love your "guitar" work (actually reminds me more of David Gilmour than Mark K.). This is very touching and emotional. I think the voice really heightens the emotional content, makes it sound so lonely. you are ultimately creative with that speech trick, i never would have thought of that. really lovely smokeyVW. i need to explore synthetic speech some more - it's fun!

and in the "risk of sounding pompous" department, i really admire Gilmour's playing too, he's a lot of what makes PF what they are. my fake guitar is nowhere near either of those giants, but i would say it's more like Knopfler here. ha! can't believe i just typed that.

Wow, wonderful tune. Needs a couple of listenings to sink in, and when I read the comments and got the meaning of the lyrics I just had to hear it one more time... Really meaningful lyrics which adds up the the beautiful instrumentation.
And also the speech thing is really cool. Thanks for describing the method, really fun to play with.
Super tune !
The Chief
Ps. The tune placed by the cellos is "Dovregubbens hall" bby Edward Greig, a segment of the play "Peer Gynt" written by Henrik Ibsen. Greig and Ibsen are regarded as two of the most famous norwegians in the world. [ Reply to This ]
. &mdash 06/02/07 - 03:52:36 PM
good p.s. -- i knew it had to do with Pyr Gynt and Greig - but i wasn't sure what: "The Hall of the Mountain King" - is that "Dovregubbens hall"??? the visceral dance energy in that song always attracted me...
but any way, i'm glad this song meant something for you. i'm never sure how vague is too vague. i really don't want to lead the reader directly into a literal interpretation, as i think i mentioned earlier here, it's important to bring YOUR viewpoint into the mix...

I'm so sorry about your friend. The Marine recruiter has been stalking my son since he turned sixteen, and I feel like an army of one fighting my own war to keep my child safe from the slick ad campaign of out right lies the gov't is shoveling out. Blind Patriotism is such crap, and my only son is not going to get vaporized by an RPG so my brother's family can drive a Chevy Pick Up ,a Suburban, an Avalanche, three Jeeps and two Grand Ams!(4 people don't need 8 gus guzzling vehicles. If my little Cavalier runs out of gas, I'll walk to work to save my child! [ Reply to This ]

on the other hand, i think what happened with WWII (though it's been colored through many years of filters) was a war that, sad but true, demanded our involvement. patriotism was certainly a factor there, perhaps simply as a tool to rally us to arms, but it was a factor. probably some of the patriotism was "true patriotism" - defending our physical country, and our ideals. but it's really too easy for politicians to ride lots of other stuff on those coattails...
i'm really not convinced about the more recent incidents.
keep your son safe.
thanks

Powerful. The electronic voice does let me take my emotions 'off the hook' and do a service for me as a listener, there.
How did you get the higher voices? Did you simply transpose, or did you use a filter? The growing chorus at the end was really effective. [ Reply to This ]
