My FAVORITE part... &mdash 05/28/07 - 12:03:16 PM
...whether you like it or not, is the vocal...
And, you know, I could also hear a version of this with SISTERS working up some additional backing vocals, just for fun...
I like that the fact that, although the song has form and is 'regular', it is different every time through... changing up where flute or shaker or other sounds come in...
I don't know enough about Latin music, but I could imagine a sort of Jobim-ish workup of this with flute against acoustic guitar...
It ends up being, to my ears, a tune that you could take anywhere. Give it to a band if you've got a band. Take it to a picnic and it'll work there, too... I tend to like tunes like that...
The recorded sound is excellent...

The vocals?? I really find this suprising. I thought I sounded pretty shakey or at least needs strenghthening with some vocal exercises or something. Hey, maybe I should work on this as another creative expression? (The crowd boos and life's time clock says, you sure?)
Really appreciate your kind words.

Another voice vote? This is gonna take some time to sink in. Thanks for the compliment.
As for the louder cuica, I tried listening again and wondered if perhaps you were really referring to the dog yap or monkey bark sound within one of the rhythm loops. I tried lowering the volume on that one, but then lost a bit of the bottom bass drum thud. Maybe I should have used an equalizer and just lowered the high end freq. a bit.
Thanks for taking the time to take a listen.

I am so impressed at what you have here. And like Ejh, I dig your vocals... just right for this song! The spread of the instruments in the mix is works extremely well. They all have their place, not competing with one another. Any each is such an integral part of the song. Being a sometime tenor man, I really like what you have done with the sax part, very pleasing and... a real nice bit of soloing. And I dig your flute part as well.
Gotta give you high marks on this original Latin tune. It's got me grooving and feeling good.

Appreciate you giving a listen and the complimentary critique.
When doing solo's on instruments, it sure helps to be able to stop the recorder over and over till you get a line right. You can't do that in a live situation very well, especially at 120 bpm. Believe me, I'm not that good. Thank God for technology.

...seems to fit very well with this style of music. The mix is a little thin at times but fills in nicely as it progresses. I almost want to say add some reverb to particular instruments, but that may not work. All in all this little samba has the right stuff.

Jeepers &mdash 05/29/07 - 10:48:30 AM
Thanks for taking the time to give a listen and a comment. I sure could use a checklist when doing mixing, as it is all so new to me.
So far I've just learned a bit about positioning of instrument in imaginary placement in front of me and adusted the pots to the let and right with the drums being central and the bass just off to the left or right and piano the same amount counter to the bass. Then pushing additional instruments a bit further left or right as they accumulate. Is that the right idea?
Also read something about being careful not to get similar frequencied instruments in the way of each other, at least letting the main soloer get more presence by bringing down the volume or freq range of a competing sound.
I should consult with you often about the do's and don'ts before posting in the future. I hear your a good source for this knowledge.
Also, I much enjoy your dedication to your projects.
Thanks again for listening.

Hey Damien &mdash 05/29/07 - 12:36:15 AM
Nice overall sounding tune. The bass grabs (and holds me) right off the bat. I always dig the fretless sound.( Jaco fan.)
i am a fan of streaching out somewhere in a tune with a vamp,... and i could have dug a little change up in the bass pattern somewhere, with some soloing over it.(IMHO) ;) you are such an at ease soloist.
You got a lot of great stuff happening here, specialy the soloing. I'm really in to the sax and flute stuff. Sounds like your into using them to express your creativity. You need a great band to back u up. You have created yourself a nice bed to play in here. Dig the funky bass.
You have a great production style and a well laid out tune with nice veriety in the mix keeping it interesting.
Funny name...I have a song called 'da dunt' posted...its what i herd in my head till i could get it recorded.(Check it out if you have time)
It was recorded BGB(before GB)and BMJ's' so the tune was only ment for my ears' but i always dug the way it turned out.
Enough bout me...
I am looking forward to the next thing in your head.Keep em coming!

Fantastic!!! &mdash 05/29/07 - 07:13:06 PM
Man is the playing on this ever good. I particularily love the combination of sax, flute and electric piano. Typically as predominant instruments ( electric piano and flute ) they herald from a time where their use was more prominent in mainstream jazz rock and fusion. Of course I am referring to the 70`s era. This song gets right to the heart of the idiomatic styling of that period which was in my opinion a time of true musical jems ( ex. Steely Dan ). Solos were great and the melody and chord structure was quite engaging. I liked the upbeat feel and the arrangement was very imaginative. Excellent. [ Reply to This ]
