Description:
This is what one might call a 'rush job'...I injured my back about a week before the LIOLI#4 deadline, and couldn't stand (let alone sit) for a good week....so I hope my submission is not too late!
A huge 'Thank You' to Bud for organising this round of 'Loop it Or Lose It'. I'm afraid this time I 'lost' it!

Oh, for legal reasons, Bud mentioned to mention the following link...

Bad back? &mdash 05/29/07 - 06:20:25 PM
Thought Merimbula was a little quieter than usual ;)

Great percussive stuff going on and the Middle Eastern melodies work really well. Lots of aggressive (but tasteful) runs in there - sounds like the quantising problem in GB has been worked out, or is it just that eveything fits in the 1/64ths beat ?

Really interesting - impressed because: a) you did such a good job so quickly; b) you did such a quick job so well and ; c) because you did it so quickly ;)

I can recommend a physiotherapist.

Cheers,
Neil

Bad Back... &mdash 05/30/07 - 11:23:33 PM
Cheers Neil...
I had to take an aggresive stance with this submission (read 'a couple of strong macchiatos early in the morning'), otherwise I probably wouldn't have made it in time ;) I'd have dearly loved to spend a bit more time on this, however, I really needed to make up for lost time- a week without MacJams somehow didn't help the pain!

Many Thanks for the kind comments & I think I'll take you up on that physiotherapist!
Cheers,
Alf

nice horns &mdash 05/29/07 - 07:46:56 PM
i love the horns doing the piano loop. and the way you led us right into it, so it was a nice surprise when it finally arrived - genius!

I like horns! &mdash 05/30/07 - 11:28:59 PM
When I first heard the loops I thought to myself 'how can I somehow make the 2 loops relate to each other more closely?-Ah, trains & horns!'.

Now, whether or not this actually 'works' is another issue altogether, however I settled on the 'trombone section' in JP4, I guess, because, well, I like horns!

Many thanks for your kind comments.
Cheers Smokey!

Great Idea for this &mdash 05/29/07 - 08:32:59 PM
And the idea is well executed. The returning to the horn's theme is welcome in this piece and creates that feeling of a continuing adventure and journey. Nice stuff .

adventure & journey &mdash 05/30/07 - 11:35:24 PM
Being pressed for time, I didn't really have the opportunity to expand on the 2 sections of the piece, so I opted for a simple 'theme 1', 'middle', 'theme 1b-fade' approach...I'm so pleased you stopped by to listen & I really appreciate your comments Bill.
Cheers,
Alf

Wow - this is totally great! &mdash 05/29/07 - 09:03:06 PM
I also really like the horn treatment for the loop - and the long line over it. Cool incorporation of the train too.
BTW - you gotta try this. Open Myshkin's page while this is playing and watch the pickle dance to it. Now that's some real fun at MacJams.
I'm really glad you're feeling well enough to pull this off. Great work.

a little secret...! &mdash 05/30/07 - 11:41:52 PM
Actually, I'll let you in on a little secret- I often use the pickle as inspiration or a 'benchmark' for various things here at MacJams...but don't tell him- he might turn 'sour' on me...

Bud, Thanks so much for 'holding the carriage door open for me!', while I 'hobbled on over' to make the train! I really appreciated it & Thanks for stopping by!
Cheers,
Alf

I'm really chuffed you enjoyed it (as I did yours)

Despite the back (which is slowly curing itself- I hope!) I had heaps of fun putting this together.

Cheers DJ!

It was, as I've already mentioned, a bit of a 'rush job', but lots of fun all the same. I don't know why I included a Middle Eastern feel/section, but I simply couldn't resist...
Thanks for stopping on by!

Love the percussion. &mdash 05/30/07 - 09:44:54 PM
What loops are those?

[ Reply to This ]
the percussion... &mdash 05/31/07 - 12:02:31 AM
...is made up of 2 tracks.

The 'kit' is a loop. For memory, I think it's called 'Vintage Funk Drums#4', but it should be somewhere on your default GB loop library & seeing as I used GB2 for this project, I'm guessing you have GB3, so I'm certain its on your system somewhere.

The second track is a software instrument in the 'Ethnosphere' VST plug-in, called 'Darkuba Set -M'. Given that it isn't a loop, I had to 'pencil-in' the beats for this track, which was quite interesting! ;)

Thanks for the Visit Aaron!

marrakesh express &mdash 05/31/07 - 08:59:53 AM
Nice work. Lots of images of one of those overcrowded trains travelling in the middle east somewhere....... but wait......some of the sounds pull me back to Curtis Mayfield tunes and those old Blaxpoitation films ..Shaft..SuperFly..etc.

Enjoyed this rush job. Keep that back cared for..Hot..Cold..Hot...Cold..Hot...Cold.......................rest 3 days then get moving.

Middle Eastern Rail Traxploitation...perhaps? &mdash 05/31/07 - 09:20:34 PM
There is a 'mish mash' of various 'bits' of styles here...Perhaps I should've entitled it 'Loopafly's Excellent Adventure in Dubai- De Rail mix'?

I'm really glad you enjoyed the rush job Damien, & yep- I followed your advice about the back & its improved heaps over the last couple of days.

Thanks for the visit & the medical advice! ;)
Cheers,
Alf

Train... Horns! &mdash 06/03/07 - 07:17:35 AM
This is pure, 1000-proof white-lightning creativity! The 'train horn' angle was brilliant, and the execution was worth an exuberent cheer. You've created one of my favourites... love it!

Hiya Rick. Well, your generous comments just blew me away & I think you're too, too kind!
I'm so pleased you enjoyed this. I already mentioned that I would have liked to spend more time on refining this submission, sadly, it wasn't to be.
You've really made my week!
Thank You so much!

Happy Birthday &mdash 07/06/07 - 04:45:18 PM
Thought I would check out one of your tunes on your birthday. Train sound is getting some good mileage. Horns and drums are working well. Nice change up with the organ and flute. Sounds like a really good tune to me. Thanks for sharing and Happy Birthday.
