Keywords:
post rock (7)indie rock (28)experimental (314)other (25)e bow (1)melancholy (56)dazed and confused (1)
Description:
this is an instrumental improv that I did with my e-bow. since i played everything on this, the rule was "you get 1 shot per track." it's probably closest to the genre i would call post-rock (think explosions in the sky, mogwai, godspeed, mount zion memorial orchestra,...). if you like this and don't know those bands check them out. if you don't like this, i understand. you got to love an ebow though (bryn, i swear that i will up that for you)

Hardware:
fender tele, ebow, epiphone univalve amp, ibanez bass, fender rhodes, danelectro tremolo pedal, some broken drumsticks and a cymbal that my buddy threw away.

Software:
audacity

ooo ebow! &mdash 05/30/07 - 11:32:48 PM
i tried getting one a couple months back but they where out of stock. now i got that back in my obsessive mind. cool demonstration of it as well as a cool tune here. nice way to get the train out of the head, eh?

you gotta try one on a distorted bass.

I'm always a sucker for ebows - this is a lovely track Michael - love to hear this with some vocals on it too.

hmmm &mdash 05/31/07 - 12:27:45 AM
vocals huh? theres a thought, i wonder if that would work with my 1 take per track rule on this one. thanks for listening, i appreciate the listen and the comment.

Nice piece &mdash 05/31/07 - 04:36:33 AM
Hi michael this is a nice piece. I like e-bow sound too. I have tried it in a Turkish music piece for sound similation of Turkish Instrument Ney.
Nice piece

This piece wasn't what I expected... &mdash 05/31/07 - 01:26:26 PM
I listened to this with the idea that it would be a violin-based piece and was pleasantly surprised when it had a lot more going on.

It has a strange atmosphere/soundscape but that's part of my joy of listening to various pieces on NJ's every day that I can. Always something new, something different, something to make me think......to stimulate my mental processes. My musical fix for the day.

This piece reminded me of a 1990's album that I've finally listened to in full, called Chill Out by The KLF. It is similar but different.

Great work.

Paul.

it has &mdash 05/31/07 - 03:12:57 PM
the feel of the slower, reflective moments of the sublime" raise your fists like antennas to heaven". (Except in a GYBE song normally you'd have some voice-over field recording of some freak or other). This is beautiful.

man. i'm glad you like this one. it was fun recording it.i like a lot of the "post-rock" bands that are out there right now (except when it gets too formulaic), and GYBE is one of the better ones so I'll definitely take that as a compliment (although a godspeed song would be about 3 times longer). thanks so much for stopping by.

Very nice &mdash 05/31/07 - 10:32:14 PM
and i can definitely hear vocals on this (but don't ask me what vocals...). This has a terrific atmosphere - a unique vibe, probably the ebow adding its own special magic. You never disappoint. Nice work. Peace.

i'll &mdash 06/01/07 - 06:38:47 PM
think about some vocals, but none were coming to mind. i just keep picturing some real drums (instead of that cymbal i'm banging on). thanks so much for the kind words.

wot is an e bow?? &mdash 06/01/07 - 01:48:15 AM
it reminds me of the 70's some tracks i heard from then had that noise...
great sound...quite dreamy and chilled out!

hey there &mdash 06/01/07 - 06:36:00 PM
the ebow is very 70's (roxy music, eno, bowie used one on "heroes" for that main guitar part). i love them, but not exactly sure "what" they are. i think it's got something to do with magnets, you hold them over the strings on your guitar and they make the string start vibrating. if you use your fingers to fret, you get a bowed effect since it takes a sec for the string to start vibrating and the note builds. if you play with a slide, it's just like one long continous sound as you go from note to note.

they also sound neat on basses, acoustics, pretty much anything with strings. my piano is getting tuned tomorrow, so maybe i'll try it out on that. thanks for listening.

'dazed and confused'.... &mdash 06/01/07 - 07:42:06 PM
....in the keywords made me chuckle as I listened to this.

I can see the correlation!
This is a very cool track. I really like the ebow effect, as well as the way you put the whole track together to complement it.

Fab! :)
Thanks for sharing!

Woah ... &mdash 06/03/07 - 05:04:52 PM
Michael, I'm sorry I only just discovered your music. I've been missing out. You have an extraordinary talent for atmosphere. You just seem to feel the notes and sounds like they're a part of you. I had tears prickling at my eyes listening to this. There's a kind of randomness and order mixed together which enables it to express its own peculiar magic. Very impressive stuff.

thank &mdash 06/06/07 - 11:14:59 AM
you so much. those are very kind words. i try to just deal with emotion rather than song writing structure or recording quality. i guess i'm kind of a sad guy by nature, but at this point I channel most of that into music; can't afford the luxury of indulging in depression on a day to day basis in real life. thanks so much for listening.

I'm a sucker for a good ebow tune &mdash 06/25/07 - 10:28:23 PM
and you got one hear. Very nice dynamics with the quietr bits and the background bow work. Reminds me of early Floyd especially bits of The Valley Obscured by Clouds and some Another Green World too. Have you checked out the AirSynth - now sold as the AirFX? You'd love it. Thanks for posting this one.

hey bud &mdash 06/28/07 - 04:33:31 PM
isn't the AirFX that light thing that's kind of like a theremin? I've seen them used by DJs (and a couple of indie bands) but never messed with one. I gotta find one to check out. I'm glad you like this song, I love playing music like this.

sold! &mdash 06/29/07 - 04:28:30 PM
i've been thinking about picking one up lately. You hear a lot of flack from old school guys, saying it's cheating, and that you should learn to use feed back and sustain, but I have a two year old. Feed back is rarely ever a possibility, you know? Anyway, this sounds great, and I've always thought that it's about the finished product, not what you had to use to get there.
I used to always comment rage against the machine for using no instruments beyond the norm, but then I later realised that it really doesn't matter, as long as the song has integrity.

With or without the ebow, this is a great song.
nice work.

well &mdash 06/30/07 - 12:01:03 AM
the ebow and feedback are 2 different animals. i love feedback, i've spent years working on it, but there are some things you can do with an ebow that you can't do with feedback (and vice versa). i say: whatever sounds good, use it. but I've never been concerned about technical ability. good to hear from you, glad to see you back.

dude this is crazy good from beginning to end. the tone you set with the piano at the beginning is so perfect for when the ebow comes in. im so happy i found this but damn you! now i have to find time to go through all your other oldies if there's more gems like this. awesome!
