Description:
modern JOY!

Words by Stephen Kemp
Music by Stephen Kemp & Anne Cozean

girl part: Anne Cozean, also keys, mix and seamstress, also teacher, booster and good ear

boy part: Stephen Kemp, also flute, keys, percussion, mixdown - searching for diamonds in good scat

This song started out as a post of the END OF a song not yet written.

Anne grabbed it and did made a loop out of it to make it longer. Later, when the beginning of the song was written, she stitched it onto the ending. Then re-stitched it repeatedly -- lots of work.
She is such a joy to work with and highly experienced with collabs, so I was very fortunate that she chose to work with with me.

This was my first vocal collaboration, first duet, first real mixing and first JOY.

Very prophetical!

You made it to heaven, this was the end, but really, it was only the beginning! very cool!

I am looking forward to hearing your beginning and middle because, the end, which is the beginning, has got me, exited to where you will take this?

Sounds like Gospel to me dude and your voice really does remind my of Johnny Cash, later on (American IV:). Just my opinion - Keep up the good works!!

STK

Lyrics:
I MADE IT TO HEAVEN

I am
I am that I am
I am
I do be
I am that I am
that I do be.

I've never had a place to go
to ease my troubled mind before
Now here I am, singing out my soul
From the sheer joy that it's bringing to be whole

No, I've never had a place to go
to ease my troubled mind before
All in the joy that it brings me to be whole

I MADE IT TO HEAVEN
God, I am glad to be here.
I can't tell you...

I love this! &mdash 05/31/07 - 10:14:20 PM
Caught my mood and made me sway back and forth and smile. Sounds like a long, intricate path to get to here, but well worth it, in my opinion. The vocals are excellent, with some great expressive singing throughout. The music is nicely spaced and placed - restrained enough to give the voices free reign, but vital and nicely present. Joy, indeed! Thanks to everybody involved. Inspirational. Peace.

And thanks for the encouragement. I don't know how long collaboration usually takes, but this one took a long time, and got pretty grueling at times, due to the stitching of, really, two songs along the way.

I truly appreciate your words.

unique singin &mdash 06/01/07 - 08:41:09 PM
kInda a cross between Joe Cocker and Christofer Cross.

Unique vibrato and that sisters singing almost has a Beatles sound.

Cool

Now that's a word I like! And the comments on the vocals are much appreciated: Joe Cocker and Christopher Cross, cool. Thanks for listening, Mr. Tiler, and I love your work.

Yes, I was so lucky that SISTERS would work with me.

hey pardner &mdash 06/01/07 - 10:24:05 PM
that was fun for me, too, stephen. i've never done a song from the end to intro before, but when i heard your little snippet of the chorus, the mantra of joy groove hooked me. i learned a lot, as well, accidently - my favorite way - and on purpose - like how to use my computer keybd to input midi. DUH!!! so THAT's what's in the unopened Logic Express manual over there......*) your voice was perfect - swell effects on it, too. i think you did a spiffy job mixing this up. enjoyed the partnership!

Sheer joy .. &mdash 06/02/07 - 05:46:42 AM

this is awesome!! Aren't collabs just great!! Anne's sweet harmonies are perfection, love your switch of voice too- fantastic tones .. the quality when you sing in your lower register just wipes me out ..your voices work extremely well together... and a mandolin too, with a
da ra da dum intro to it :o).. going almost acapella for the outro. Wow .. this one just got re-vamped big time, great mixing too. Kudos to you both. What a result!!!

Yes, it was a challenge to find a prelude. Anne Cozean really helped there, piquing me with her baby-ah-oos from out of nowhere, and that prodded me to try to wratchet up my level of creativity, that is, she inspired me yet again. The process was very fun and gratifying.

Stunning &mdash 06/04/07 - 09:14:48 AM
I like this so much. Everybody sounds great, and the various placement and treatment of the individual parts is clever and beautiful. I also totally dig how the song develops from a very tenuous foundation into a truly off-beat, dulcimer-strumming, California-commune ecstacy! WOW!!
Well done!

"I like this so much.... truly off-beat, dulcimer-strumming, California-commune ecstacy! WOW!! Well done!"

Now those are words for me to live by. I am actually not a religious person, though spiritual, but in fact it was a now ancient California commune ecstasy that reformed me from an agnostic into a mystic. Guess I just skipped the human middlemen, sticking with the *stics!

Thanks for your observations and your interest.

Very soulful &mdash 06/04/07 - 04:32:58 PM
and full of spiritual feeling. The sound is great and with those lovely haunting voices in the backing from 'Sisters' you have a great rendition of this song. I listened to your other songs and to me you sound very much like Kenny Rogers ( which is good), Thanks, M

Wow &mdash 06/05/07 - 08:41:32 AM
I think I remember the original post, which was intriguing. This one is thrilling. Steve, you know I adore your music. And Anne, you are gorgeous as always, too. When I first heard there was a collab between you, well, I was fascinated because I'm a fan of you both. Sorry to be late to the party, but my brother just got married and well, I've been consumed by that. Coincidentally, the wedding after-party was a big menudo-off, which is our tradition : )

Yes, the slow build is wonderful, your voices distinct enough from each other to be exciting ear candy. I love the last joyful, head-bobbing spirituality. Great collab, and congratulations on your first one, Steve. It was a success!!!

Nice one Stephen. I have to preface my comments with the fact that I am of the firm belief that Anne could sing backup on almost anything and breathe special life into it. That's some voice you have Steve, and this is a really interesting vehicle for it. Even without Anne, this would still be good. I'm suitably impressed - congratulations.

The piano, the harmonies, your voice, the long slow gradual build, the RELEASE as the dulcimer kicks in- just brilliant!

If you were trying to capture joy in a song, you succeeded!
