Keywords:
noise (52)casio (5)sound (23) ()
Description:
this is a piece that I did on my CZ1 synth. i got it pretty recently so I figured i needed to do a little experimenting. this is all that synth, except the drums of course. you gotta love casio.

i wrote a melody line for it that i was thinking about doubling on guitar and vocals, but i like it instrumental ( i get lost in synth noise sometimes).

Hardware:
casio CZ-1 synth, zoom digital 8 track (i used the drum machine), intel mac mini, boss digital delay

Software:
audacity

Cas... Yo! &mdash 06/01/07 - 10:20:09 AM
I know it's an experiment so I'll not critique the repetitive meandering... :-) First, I loved my Casio CZ101 for years (now gathering dust in the garage.) I hear a lot of FM-mod similarities in timbre, is this a newer synth? And secondly, there was a LOT going on there simultaneously... does it have built-in sequencer recording, so you just built layers in the synth and started it all that going at once? Or was that overdubbed after-the-fact? And finally, there was some cool pitch-bending in there... was that done manually with the wheel, or can you program it to do the bend-downs on notes? Anyway, a fun way to show off a bunch of voices and features.

?eng(edited)lish? &mdash 06/01/07 - 10:25:01 AM
Uh, some of the English in there made sense until I edited a couple of words without re-reading. And until after that, then, became the meaning quite unclear it is. Sorry about that, I don't normally type in fragmented English (although my mind thinks in fragmented English all the time.) Sigh.

yup &mdash 06/01/07 - 06:17:35 PM
super repetitive and meandering. the CZ-1 is basically a beefed up CZ 101 with a full set of keys, velocity, atertouch and 2 oscillators per voice. FM mod and phase distortion 80's silliness all the way. These types of synths are new to me, and I know all of the pretty crystalline depeche mode sounds, but i wanted to see if i could get some dirt out of it.

no sequencing here (there are a few overdubs), and all of the mod wheel stuff was done manually. i'm sure I can probably program it to do that stuff, but i don't know how (I bought it right before Sophie was born, and haven't really messed with it much). i basically just turned it on and messed with the controls.

thanks for listening to my self indulgent noise. you gotta break out the 101 sometime. i love how small those are; they look like toys, but they are serious music makers.

I love this michael! Great experiment.

So help us all understand your process- Did you record everything onto the 8 track and then take it into Audacity and....

hey man &mdash 06/01/07 - 06:26:38 PM
thanks for stopping by. i made that wierd opening sound, and thought it was cool so i recorded it on the 8 track (it's downstairs next to the synth) before I lost it forever. turned on the drum machine and just made that sound over the drums for awhile.

bounced that into audacity, and then added the repetitive bass pattern, and then there are 2 tracks of the noodling stuff. i plugged the synth into a digital delay while recording for those last 2 tracks. lastly i jammed along on one of those african tongue drums.

not really sure what i did to get those sounds since i didn't pay much attention whle i was doing it. i just started pressing buttons, and using the mod wheel. i was just trying to get a feel for how the controls work on this synth. it's pretty cool though, paid $150 for it, and i'm glad i bought it. thanks for listening.

Sweet tone. &mdash 06/01/07 - 12:23:44 PM
This song is EXTREMELY repetitive, but that's ok because it sounds so good. I'm a guitarist and don't know crap about synthesizers. I just know when one sounds good to me, and this one sounds very good. You did a lot of good orchestration and layering in here, but you should definitely modulate the main riff once in a while.

thank you &mdash 06/01/07 - 06:30:16 PM
i know, it does the same thing forever; but it's not really meant to be a song. i was looking at it as "on the job training." i hate reading manuals, so i usually learn by trial and error (that and asking tons of dumb, annoying questions). maybe i'll turn it into a song, probably not. I can make some loops from it (anyone else feel free to cannibalize this); that synth is sick though, right?

I totally get that. That's what "The Gonad Song" was for me.

you would like Brant Bjork &mdash 06/02/07 - 01:03:42 PM
check out "Defender of the Oleander" or "Sun Brother" from the Jalamanta album, only 99cents and you just might dig it.

good work here.

i'll &mdash 06/02/07 - 02:15:32 PM
go on record as saying I actually love Brant Bjork. I'm substance free, but I loove the stoniness of that guy. Better than the quenns IMHO.

YEs yes &mdash 06/04/07 - 10:05:40 AM
What fun the casio is had one awhile back but had to get rid of it...long story I think some rising synth in the background with a lead here and there would add some more flavor but its a good groove as it is!
