Description:
A song about a stripper I saw at my bachelor party a long, long time ago (really honey, I swear). Rock and Roll is a dirty business, but somebodies got to do it. Lyrics by Matt M, music by me. I sang and performed everything on this one.
Lyrics:
Raven
© 2007 Philip VanDusen and Matt M
She’s walkin’ down the runway
Lookin’ like she’s ten years old
She’s taken all of my money
Leavin’ me with nothin’ to hold
Raven, why’d you have to leave me?
Raven, why’d you have to go?
Married her so young at sixteen
Stayed together a while
Now she’s gone to the city
And someone else gets her smile
Last time I slipped her five
To do a little dance on the pole
Came alive when I touched her thigh
And after that she was cold
Raven, why’d you have to leave me?
Raven, why’d you have to go?
I’d cut off my hands, if you’d only come back
I’d undo all of my plans, if you’d only come back
I’d cut off my legs, if you’d only come back to me
I’d cut myself to pieces for you baby
Raven says it’s temporary
All this shakin’ her ass
She said, why do it for free
When I can do it for cash
Raven, why’d you have to leave me?
Raven, why’d you have to go?

Wow yes a better mix! kick ass my friend, that mustve been one sexy Raven for her to inspire this nitty gritty rock! fast race car rock! [ Reply to This ]

Tom,
Thanks for coming back after the repost fiasco. Yes, the mix is much better, the first one was a mistake and when I listened to it to be sure it posted OK, I was horrified. glad you liked.

magnificent! &mdash 06/02/07 - 10:26:34 PM
Its great! When the backing vocals came in with that low 'Raven' near the end I was about to go mental.I reckon if you did this live it would be good to continue that backing line on like a chant and then launch into a colossal solo returning to the chorus. But thats just an extended EP in my head, that I'm hearing you doing while I'm carrying on typing even though the song has finished:- Excellent [ Reply to This ]
reprise &mdash 06/07/07 - 11:52:31 PM
I LOVE that idea! A big rip roarin reprise after a long moaning chant of Raven- painfully wanting....then BLAM back in your face.....I may try it later....;-)

Lust! &mdash 06/03/07 - 11:56:48 AM
Hi Phil - great to have a new track from you - this is a great dirty slab of lustful rock n roll, down n dirty, reminds me (a little) of INXS at their best.
Did I mention this is dity???
Great mix, real clarity on eveything - the vocals up front, but everything else nicely placed. Feck, how do you achieve this in Pro ... I'm nowhere near this quality??!!
Great stuff, nice and pumping!
Oh, that sounds dirty too ...

That's gonna be the name of my next song!
Hope you get as much out of those mastering articles I sent. Music Tech is a UK mag, you should get it! It's amazing! It's $160/yr here in the US (ouch), but it's gotta be lees where you are! I've been working my ass off mixing lately. Learning a lot by being around here and listening to what I admire, dissecting it as to why, etc. I've been at this music thing for 30 years and counting now. Untold years on a Yamaha 4-track to prepare me for Bias Deck and then Logic Pro, and learning more every day. I love it. Thanks for listening.

This is CRISP.... &mdash 06/03/07 - 04:56:45 PM
...and it rocks like crazy....
The drums and the guitars are remarkably tight and hard-hitting...
There's a nod to David Lee Roth in some bits of the vocal...
I love the lead guitar...
My only nit, as a lyric writer, would be: this song is hooky as heck, really very catchy, and I think it would stay in the head better with a stronger lyrical hook...
Always a pleasure, Philip. Let's see...usually you post in threes....

lame &mdash 06/08/07 - 12:02:01 AM
Yeah, I know the lyrics are a little lame, even for my standards (LOL!). They were actually written ad lib/ tape rolling when we originally recorded the song 7-8 years ago. I had heard it so many time before I re-did it, I couldn't bear to change them.....

Rockin' &mdash 06/07/07 - 05:47:15 AM
firstly I also think the mix of everything is very good.
Crisp is the word - very tight playing too. Singing suits the music perfectly. Overall I think Pearl Jam, with touches of Nirvana. Guitar solo is awesome, love the nice expressive wah usage, (you should hear me with my wah .. terrible lol). Nits: I agree with Ed that at times I thought it lacked a bit more hookiness in the lyrics and something jarred with the repetition of the "cut my legs off" and other cutting towards the end.
I'd also re-look at the opening which is played fine but seems just too crisp & stark for the quite flamboyant song that follows. Perhaps use some wah on the opening guitar (and leave the bass out at first), bring the second in as is and bring the bass in with the drums. Perhaps a bit cliched - but does work for these types of songs IMO.

Thanks for stopping in Mc. No CD I'm afraid, no delusions of stardom here. The audience I have at MacJams is bigger than I 've had my whole life (except maybe the hardcore shows I played in Art School), so I'm happy as is. But thx for the props!

Cut To Pieces &mdash 06/07/07 - 07:39:34 AM
Rockin tune, Philip! Your voice is just amazing and the rhythm section is aces. That lead guitar smokes. I'd cut off one of my extra arms to play like that.
This is another stellar Raven song posted here. Tom Wounded's Raven's and Crows is another brilliant Raven song.

Thanks Mikki,
I love thinking that this would be played at a party in Europe. If it ever happens, let me know how people react, THAT would be interesting....

hey phil &mdash 06/07/07 - 12:04:35 PM
almost knocked me over.
The opening guitar rocks.
The solo is cooking.
The Bose speakers are put to good use here as the mix is very up front and where it should be for a rockin tune.
I am huge fan of guitar songs from the old days when the guitar riff drove the whole sound and this fits that bill. Nice work.
Love a guitaar tune with a guitar solo, man
thats what i'm saying...
rock on
great work

I agree &mdash 06/08/07 - 12:27:38 AM
Amen Tim,
Guitar, guitar, guitar, loud guitar, more guitar, then guitar solo, then even more guitar, wah-wah, acoustic strum strum, then guitar, louder guitar then end it.
A perfect day.

Great Wah-Wah Lead &mdash 06/07/07 - 02:23:41 PM
I'm not a big fan of the wah-wah sound, but you did it with this lead.
I also like your drums, lyrics, and singing a lot. The rhythm guitar is good as well as the bass.
I also like that you did a middle 8 (or bridge) just before the lead.
Good song and well recorded. [ Reply to This ]

Thx for the personal email and critique. I truely appreciate it when people actually say what they mean here, rather than just blowing smoke. Comments well taken Cheers...

oooh &mdash 06/07/07 - 09:41:32 PM
I love this. Very gritty. The guitars of the streets. Overall a really hip eclectic sound. Supa job on the vocals. Sort of emulates that electric current that permeates those types of places, not that I've ever been in one. KA approved [ Reply to This ]

Me either, all I know about those type of places is what I've been told. Really.

Thanks for dropping in. It's always nice to see a new face on my pages. I'll have to check out your stuff, at a glance it seems you've been here a while. Thanks for the props on Lenny. I like his direct guitar style, not too tricked-up.

Smooth Rocker! &mdash 06/08/07 - 09:53:54 AM
There is a "Steve Miller" quality to your vox and playing. Makes me want to pullout the "funny cigarettes" and crank it up!! Bring's me back to my younger days. I like the version MUCH better!

younger days &mdash 06/08/07 - 08:08:55 PM
Anything that brings me back to my younger days is OK by me!
PS: I saw some of your posts about the MJ legal agreements in the newsgroups. Don't get too worried about it. I do a lot of artists rights and intellectual property rights stuff with my job. If MJ (or anyone else) stole and profited off your stuff, basic copyright law has you completely covered and you could sue thier pants off for damages and re-imbursement.

hey &mdash 06/08/07 - 08:37:43 PM
this isn't my area of expertise at all; but it sounds really good. your voice, the cool wah wah solo, it's totally hooky yet rocks. i should really work on my production techniques, but i like writing too much (the old lie was: i should really practice my guitar more, but I like writing too much). good job. Nice! &mdash 08/04/07 - 04:00:47 AM
Dude, finally I've gotten around to catching up on the forum, I like the song alot, the intro riff is great, very catchy rock. Extremly well mixed as well, I think the coda is something that stands out too me, really like the progression. The wah on the solo went off as well, I love a good wah solo. Are you doing backup vocals as well? [ Reply to This ]
ruef! &mdash 08/05/07 - 08:33:51 PM
Hey Man! Glad to see you're back. Yeah, the backing vox are me as well. Glad you liked. I'm (obviously) a sucker for wah lead, too. Some hate the wah, but I choose to call the wah my friend. Looking forward to hearing your new stuff!
