carnivores (1)rg (42)paddler (47)
Description:
This was the last song I recorded on a tent trip. The wind had died down and it was towards midnight,I'd spent most of the day searching for a quarry in dark pine forest apparently haunted by the ghost of a monk known as 'The Claife Crier'.I didn't find it - I have the OS coordinates now so I'd like to find it and record a song there.I wasn't faraway on this occasion however.

I think the lyrics are about counting your chickens

..maybe..?

Lyrics:
Carnivores

Here we can hide away
Make love in the soft warm rain
Emerald eyes keep searching ruby skies
See Dandelion woman laughing as she flies

Wild as the vines that grow
Creeping in to steal the light
Fireflies will lead you there
Beneath the sacred moon on high

Hold me till the world begins to fade
We shall break the promise that we made
The shadows reaching miles across the plains
Kiss the mountains burning in our flame

Why should we hide inside
When we were born to live
Time shall be yours to keep
Tear off your dress and breathe

Naked as the midnight magic stirs
Turn to face the spirit of the earth
The Wildest storm is raging we'll not fail
Bound as one the starlight seas we sail

Sun is spinning closer quickly save us take us to forever

I feed on the greed of men
Strumming on the strings of life
When you can read my signs
There will be love inside

Planets rumble,Lightning fills the night
Scarecrows dancing with thunderbolts of light
Carnivores comes screaming through the dark
I turn to you but you don't know wrong from right

Sun is spinning closer quickly save us take us to forever

again. Damn, that tent sounds like a great place to carry around in your memory. Wish I had a place like that to return to.

I can't tell you how much I liked this song.

i LOVE the lyrics. what a mood and feelings you are able to creat with your words.... truly brilliant song. your guitar is fantastic. i wish i could ever master it the way you do :) but the ending boy, the end with balalajka is SOMETHING. it gives your tune such a great "kick"! brilliant song! thank you

I honestly dont think I've mastered it - I'm just a reasonable bluffer. Some kids I teach are streets ahead of me on guitar - I mean I can't even play the chord of F without barring it.I just like plucking away and tuning things to suit.BUT THAT DOESN'T MEAN I DONT LOVE YOUR'E COMPLIMENT! Thank you Pavlina.PS whats with paja - is a j same as a v in brazil? Seems more like Polish to me..or am I just wrong on all accounts as usual?

paja is a shortage of pavlina. czech language is very rich so i can be called many "synonyms" : pavlina, pavlinka, pavlinecka, pavluska, paja, pajunka, pavlik etc. :) all of them except pavlina, are either bigger or smaller diminutives of my name, but all are used in normal life and every other name has it's own. Your name is richard, so you can be called also risa (reecha), richardek, rik etc. :)

woa didnt expect you to answer so quic.No worries man - I flail and plunder through life in a whirlwind of chaos - the more it seems i try to organise things they all end up happening on some same date or other.(A hot date would be a nice break too as it goes or then again yet another lynchpin) - weird sometimes your surfing life laid back, other times everyones after your blood.Luckily my head's made of wood & cotton wool er and some sparkly tape.

Very nice. I hear a lot of Crosby, Still and Nash, which makes this an istant favorite. I can almost see the woods surrounding you as you sit in the darkness recording this. And very cool story about the search for the quarry. I hope you find it and get to do a tune there.

Enjoyed this very much.

I remember hearing Guinevere a long long time ago - I dont know that it was an influence rather that I think with certain chords require certain harmonies if you know what i mean - but I think probably the tone of voice is similar - kind of soft.Mmmm that quarry - there are alot of stories about people never returning and foresters who will not work there after certain times, and things that follow you in the dark - I'm saving that one for sometime in August.I'm not usually in the least bit worried by ghost tales and have visited quite alot of supposedly haunted places at night.I never tried recording anything at these places though and I'm thhinking (I dont have any particular opinion one way or the other about ghosts) that maybe in creating music something might seep through in someway or other that I might not notice till later..Thank you

One of the most exceptionally great creations I've ever heard in my whole life, nevermind MacJams. The song contains so much; a fullripe composition, wonderful vocals, great musicanship, and a very special mood. And alltogether it feels meaningfull in some way that i can't exactly pinpoint.

Will keep listening to this one again and again for a good while. I am flabbergasted!

I agree with Ed, I was going to say it but didn't because I couldn't quite put my finger on it. I was thinking of Crosby, Stills & Nash + the album "Thick as a Brick" = "Carnivores" (this song).

Mostly I do what I'm told... &mdash 06/05/07 - 08:39:15 PM
So if Cori Ander, my friend Johannes, sends me an email and tells me I am to come to thus and such a MacJams address and fall in love with the song I will find there, I pretty much do it...

It only gets embarrassing to the extent that IF I had stumbled upon said page and song on my own, I would have managed the falling-in-love-with-it part of it on my own, but what can you do?...that's not how it happened this time around...

I love the blend of guitar and balalaika here. Reminds me of some mid-period Jethro Tull, and a bit of that David Crosby demo of 'Guinnevere' with guitar and bouzouki and bass... Reminds me just a little of some of the good parts of Donovan...

It doesn't need it, not at all, but I could imagine this tune with a nice melodic-but-deep bass....

The vocal really suits the song you wrote. You really did a nice job singing it.

Reminds me of an evening I once spent in a tent in the Pacific Northwest with someone I used to love, only to wake the next morning to the unmistakable sign of bear right outside the tent flap... And a night up near Bellingham or somewhere like that, hearing "somethings" moving and talking and grumbling outside the tent, and deciding NOT to go investigate... And a lightning-filled snowstorm at Spring Hill of Ashby...and another storm in a tent on the shore of one of the Great Lakes...

So. Much reminding going one.

I've somehow managed to miss your songs before this, paddler... If they're good like this is good, I gotta get busy...

Ed

Thanks Ejh - I just listened to 'The Mist Comes Up The Valley' - wow what production and what well crafted song-writing and judging by your stats I'd say a compliment from your good self is a compliment indeed.

Yeah - I thought Guinevere too,I haven't heard it for years but I know I had it on vinyl once so it must have stayed in the old wooden block somwhere and appeared here.I dont know any Donavan songs but I have had his name mentioned quite alot - I'm frightened to listen to music sometimes incase I can't let go of it - cursed photographic mind.

I'm looking forward to hearing more of your stuff,so for now - Thank you very much

song, and beautiful performance. You have a great voice, full of emotion and great expressiveness, and nice harmonies. CSN meets (the lighter side of) Zep! &mdash 06/07/07 - 05:55:39 PM
This has a beautiful reference to Guinevere on the first CSN album, and the balalaika oozes (the subtler side of) Zep - and I'm hearing a little Beatles in there too. Who would have expected such a perfect combinatiom. Done in a tent eh .... amazing sounds and production. Love the lyrics and everything about it really.
Beautiful!

thoughts from the bull... &mdash 06/07/07 - 08:47:51 PM
first off, this one has echoes of Pink Floyd's Grandchester Meadows, which is probably not too far off given the topical nature of the song.

second, this is an absolutely brilliant porch song: the kind of song you can sit and listen to either alone or with a group of like-spirited folk and just let wash over you.

thirdly, i really enjoyed the heck out of this one. peaceful, easy, yet deceptively simple-sounding... tho i know how complex it all is. the vocal treatment alone is worth every cent of time.

great work here! thank you!
