Description:
This song is built around an old lyric, which was itself cobbled together from old lines scribbled down at different times, so the song has the odd distinction of stemming from more than one experience - none of which, I’m happy to say, are current! Does this make it more universal, or just piecemeal? Maybe you can tell me.
Musically, in this, I’m most proud of the bassline, because it contains something resembling a bassline (at least in the verse and bridge), as opposed to me plucking the notes to match the chords I’m playing on the guitar. The bass is also new (to me, that is - it’s a used Washburn Taurus T12) and I think it sounds a lot better than the $5 monster I was using.
Thanks for listening.
Lyrics:
Hypnotized
She calls him a liar to his face
And a fool to his back
But she smiles when she lies
He sits and stares off into space
Panic and attack
But he dies when she smiles
And somewhere deep inside these walls
He hears something moving
I was happy to be hypnotized
But I think it’s gone too far
I was blind but now I realize
I don’t know who you are
The fire’s dead
The house is cold
And memory’s a ghost
At the corner of a smile
Ships colliding in the night
The silence hurts the most
But the voices drive you wild
And somewhere deep inside these walls
She hears something moving
If this is bliss then
Girl there’s something missing
If this is right then
Girl there’s something wrong

Nice &mdash 06/03/07 - 05:24:28 PM
solid production on this David. The bass line sounds good to me. Like the keyboards and again the distorted guitar on the chorus is nicely placed in the mix. Great vocals - you sound quite close miked and there's a lot warmth overall on the recording - even when the song gets busy the sound dosen't get brash. Great ending too.
Thanks for posting.

for stopping by and commenting. Glad you like the mix - this is something ou do very well on your songs and I take it as a great compliment that you think this works. Happy you like the vocals, too. I think the lyrics have a kind of intimate feel to them, so warmth is what I was aiming for. Still not 100% happy with the harmonies on the chorus, but you have to let go sometime! Thanks again for taking the time. I appreciate it. Cheers. [ Reply to This ]
Good Song &mdash 06/03/07 - 08:05:36 PM
I would call these timeless lyrics (fresh and new to me :)
The bass does hold the song together well, good work there. The ending is excellent!

Many thanks &mdash 06/04/07 - 06:44:14 AM
Glad you like the bass. I'm inordinately proud of it because I'm not a bass player, and I have great admiration for the true bass player's ability to create a bass line that is memorable, rhythmic, and yet doesn't distract from everything else that's going on in the song. I may not have achieved that here, but it's closer than I've ever gotten before! Thanks for taking the time to comment. I appreciate it. Cheers [ Reply to This ]
great bass line &mdash 06/04/07 - 06:38:32 AM
Nice new toy there. I'm sure you're pleased with this bass line, as you said.

Love the new toy &mdash 06/04/07 - 05:39:40 PM
and i'm happy with the bassline, yes, even if it's not that great, just by virtue of the fact that it represents an attempt to try something different. Thanks for taking the time to stop by and comment. I appreciate it. Cheers. [ Reply to This ]
David does well &mdash 06/04/07 - 07:42:07 AM
Really enjoyed this one. A little weird(in a good way). Reminds me of a Bowie song a little. Like the guitar sound near the end.I was 90% happy with the Harmonies. Think you've got a good song here.

The very mention &mdash 06/04/07 - 05:43:35 PM
of the Thin White Duke in connection with anything musical I've done is a great tribute. Thanks for that, and also for the "weird" nod. Love it. I sometimes think my songs never sound as weird in the real world as they do in my head! Glad a touch of the strange managed to sneak through. Thanks again for stopping by and taking the time. I appreciate it. Cheers. [ Reply to This ]
P.S. &mdash 06/04/07 - 09:50:02 PM
the more i listen to this, the less happy I am with the harmonies on the chorus - I think I'm actually down to about 60% at this stage! But thanks for the vote of confidence! Cheers. [ Reply to This ]

I love your comment &mdash 06/04/07 - 11:52:21 PM
Stickiness? Grittiness? In my song? Why yes, I do believe you're right. And as for Roxy - rather cool. I love your stuff, and i appreciate your taking the time to stop by here and comment on mine. Thanks for the kind words. Cheers. [ Reply to This ]
May be "peicemeal" &mdash 06/05/07 - 12:56:37 PM
But it works well nonetheless. Peicing together a non-related series of events into a coherant work I think can make a work stronger. This one is seamless. The lyrics are wonderful and the production and performance are very strong. A very enjoyable tune. [ Reply to This ]
glad you like the lyrics &mdash 06/05/07 - 08:48:45 PM
I was afraid they would not gel. I am grateful for your taking the time and for your kind words. Mostly, I am glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for your comments. I appreciate it. Cheers. [ Reply to This ]
sweet &mdash 06/06/07 - 01:05:35 AM
this is a very cool song. you recorded it so well too. kind of reminds me of an old roxy music song (in feel and the vocals). the wierd guitar solo is really good. i like when the chord shifts up unexpectedly and the guitar just goes for it.
did you record your guitars live, or is that an amp model? [ Reply to This ]
Thanks, dude &mdash 06/06/07 - 10:02:15 PM
Really glad you like it. Roxy Music is not something I'd ever thought of, but I think you're the second person to mention that vibe and I can see it. I'll take "weird" for the guitar solo! All guitars recorded live. That's my Maya electric (got it for a hundred bucks last year - I think it's Japanese, and i love it!) plugged straight into a Behringer Eurorack UB502, which goes into an FCA202 Fireiwire interface and straight on into my iMac. I add effects using GB, turn it up, and play it loud. Works for me! Thanks for stopping by, and taking the time, dude. I appreciate it. Cheers. [ Reply to This ]
thoughts from the bull... &mdash 06/07/07 - 08:55:23 PM
loved the fade in. works very well for the temperature of this song. the production is really well done and has a wonderful balance.
while the music is so well performed and works so well, it is the lyrics and the tone of the "story" being told here that hit most of all. it's all there in the words "panic and attack." i love that line!
the chorus is clear and the characters are all too identifiable. really well done!
the ending could've been rough. you chose both a strategically smart way out of the song, while also making the ending extremely effective and suitable. I think had you just chose to fade it out, you'd have lost a moment of good impact for the listener. by dropping out with only the vocal, it really pops and makes for a terrific book closing finish!
great job on this and really well done! thank you! [ Reply to This ]
Thank you, man &mdash 06/08/07 - 12:11:36 AM
for the considered and complimentary words. I guess it is a story, or a series of stories, and if the characters are identifiable, then hopefully it's a story that others can relate to - which is a good thing! I really enjoyed your latest, and i'm glad you found this one worthwhile. Thanks for taking the time, and for listening so carefully. Love your description of the ending. Cheers. [ Reply to This ]
Like this one a lot! &mdash 06/07/07 - 09:55:04 PM
Great vocals and lyrics - probably more fx on the guitars than I'd prefer, but that's just a matter of personal taste. Solid bass and drums. It sounded like you lost interest in the vocals towards the end - I only mention this because it's something I've been known to do on more than one occasion.
I really like the tune, and you have done a really clean mix.

Thanks, dude &mdash 06/08/07 - 12:16:38 AM
Glad you like the song. I'm pretty proud of the rhythm tracks on this one. I know what you mean about the vocals. It wasn't so much losing interest as it was losing confidence in what I was doing with it, I think! Initially, this song had a totally different chorus (same words, more or less - but completely different melody) and I think as I recorded the new version, I began to have doubts about whether I'd done the right thing by changing it! Maybe you're hearing some of that in there. Anyway, glad you enjoyed it, and thanks for commenting. I appreciate it. Cheers. [ Reply to This ]

How could I ? Im always a sucker for great rock n roll and this is no exception, cool hook driven rock, love it! Love that heavy bass [ Reply to This ]

well played and arranged. The mix is very good too. Your vocals sounds great... [ Reply to This ]
Thanks, craft &mdash 06/09/07 - 09:32:54 AM
I'm happy you like the vocals. I recorded them with much less effects than I'm used to doing, which can be a bit scary! Taking the appraoch on the song I'm working on now. Hope it works out. Thanks for stopping by and taking the time to comment. Always appreciated. Cheers. [ Reply to This ]
Terrific words-lyrics &mdash 06/09/07 - 03:27:40 PM
and the music fits in as well.
But I have to say, it seems that the words really seem to tell a nice story.

look into my eyes ... &mdash 06/09/07 - 06:45:33 PM
Hey David - lovely track, great guitar hooks and sounds, and a love the heavily choruses picky guitar ... er, in fact, they all sound great, and the mix is one of you best. The chorus harmonies are odd - on first listen, they sound discordant, but by the second time roundm they make more sense, and act as a good hook.
Really like the feel of the drums on this one too - I'll say there are bits of dame Bowie in this ... so it's not just me. Great ending!

How can you not &mdash 06/09/07 - 10:09:11 PM
love a comparison to Mr Bowie?! Glad you like the song. I love that drum loop, and that - together with the bassline - is what drives the song for me. That and the lyrics. Everything else is negotiable! Thanks for stopping by. I'm still listening to your latest, by the way. It's on the iPod! Cheers. [ Reply to This ]
basss!!! &mdash 06/10/07 - 03:20:19 PM
lovin it the break and bridge perfect to me! Realy like your voice. Great lyrics! Nice and tight all around. I like the looseness in the lead has a live feel to it. Hypnotizing!!! hehe! [ Reply to This ]
Thanks for the kind words &mdash 06/11/07 - 06:38:42 AM
and for the compliment on the bass, and the lead. I did not plan the solo as much as I sometimes do. I just picked up and played a few times until I got to this. Glad you liked it. Thanks for stopping by. I appreciate it. Cheers. [ Reply to This ]
Very cool &mdash 06/10/07 - 09:23:22 PM
but I had trouble with the chorus. Leaving that alone, I thought the verses were very cool with very tasty lead fills. [ Reply to This ]
I'm with you &mdash 06/11/07 - 06:35:24 AM
on that. Still playing around with the chorus in my head (and on my guitar!). This was never really intended to be a WIP - I was pretty much done messing around with it. But I do think I'm going to go back and rethink parts of it, especially the chorus. I've even started wondering if the whole song wouldn't be better as an acoustic number (although I do like those guitar fills! Thanks for mentioning those...) Thanks for stopping by. I appreciate it. Peace. [ Reply to This ]
nice chops &mdash 06/18/07 - 05:06:24 PM
love your vocals
moody, controlled, with a little bit of smoove jazz to them...
production is pro, and like everyone else, your bass line is kicking!!! [ Reply to This ]
Thanks, dude &mdash 06/19/07 - 10:02:22 PM
Glad you like the vocal - an area I'm rarely happy with in my performances! I don't hate the vocal on the verse, but I'm pretty unsure about the chorus. In fact, I'm thinking of redoing it. Not sure if I'll bother reposting it, but I think it needs to change. As for the bass - thank you very much. I like it too! Thanks for coming back and listening. I appreciate your taking the time. Cheers. [ Reply to This ]

I'm still struggling with the chorus on this one. Every now and then I go back to it, and I still can't nail it. One of these days...Thanks for the kind words. I really appreciate it. Peace. [ Reply to This ]
