Description:
Imagine being in love with someone who is in love with themselves.
The song was originally going to be called "Instant Tragedy," but it sounded a bit trite.
This is the newest addition to my collection, Over Cautious, in which
the intent is to keep each track simple, mellow, and free of noisy clutter. heh!
Anyhow, hope you like this one. Thank you for taking the time to listen!
Lyrics:
...
She's seen a million two faces
and she can remember them all.
But don't try to ask her to recite the names,
that is just something she will not explain.
She's been a million two places
and she's been in love with them all.
But don't try and ask her to come back again,
That is like casting a light on her shame.
She is so entertained by the vanity of her name.
I should have known this right from the start
She kissed the arrow, shot me in the heart.
She's known a million two numbers
and she's made love to them all.
But don't try to force her with billowing wiles
That is just something she kills when she smiles.
She is so entertained by the vanity of her name.
I should have known this right from the start
She kissed the arrow, shot me in the heart.
She's seen a million two faces
and she's been in love with them all.
But don't try to ask her to recite the names,
that is just something she will not explain.

hi you and boris the bull :) &mdash 06/05/07 - 09:43:59 AM
brilliant lyrics and great uncomplicated melody and intrumentation. really strong song and i simply love it! the whistling at the end is a great idea, you dont hear it very often anywhere and it gives to the song a touch of a real story, real person, someone with whom you really crossed your way. the only thing what makes me little unsure here on macjams is, that im not english native speaker, so i do understand the lyrics, but i dont get the mood of the song. please excuse my ignorance, but did the wistling at the end just explain to us, listeners, that all that is just a past, it was maybe hard for you, but nowdays you can talk about it, no problem at all, think about it any time, even whistle a little tune, while marching through the nature? did the whistling mean, that you dont mind anymore and all the trouble is now for you a meaningless past? i hope i dont sound stupid :)

About the whistling I think he means she it out of his world/heart.
I have a lady like this one's in my life... I love here but she only look at here self's, no mater what I did she only loves here self.... And I was here lover.
Her is an good example hove she was/is... she's such a diva that she won't enter a restaurant until they change the pictures on the walls to her liking.
This is very well... KUDOS

Skean, thank you for your thoughts!
I'm sorry that you actually GET this song. it is not a feeling i would wish anyone i care about to feel - of being ignored or an afterthought.
thank you for sharing that part of your life. be well!

i appreciate your kind words so much. that you took the time to post them means a lot to me. the mood of the song is of someone who has realized that there is no hope of true love. it is sort of a "coming to terms" mood. it is melancholic yet upbeat.
the whistling was used to replace where another verse should have been. It's almost to say, "I'm done talking about it and I'm just going to go wander off on my own now."
i do believe the song is from the perspective of someone viewing the relationship as "in the past." I explained to a friend recently that this song could be about a movie star who is obsessed with seeing her (or even his) name and face up on the screen. So much so that there is nothing in real life that can compare. someone who will shake your hand while kissing someone else on the cheek.
and for what it's worth, the word "stupid" is not in my vocabulary! hehe

wow &mdash 06/05/07 - 06:09:28 PM
First song I've heard by you - I dont read lyrics on the first listen - I just listen.I like it 'right from the first chord'.Full on guitar, full on vocals.Sixties feel to the chords - I LIKE THAT! we should do a song together at least I'd say, based on what I just heard if your other songs are reggae and death metal THEN... we should still do a song together.
p.s how does your guitar sound in mono?
(its a little perverted question to do with a roughshod-ignore-past-this-is-how-to-do-mixing phase I'm going through)
what the hell was I talking with you about recently...............?
ah - autoplay on/off?- just shows - your avatar is very rememorable - you are reading a post by someone with no memory (self inflicted) MORE! [ Reply to This ]
THANK YOU! &mdash 06/07/07 - 08:00:35 AM
60's feel, eh? i like that! as for Reggae and Death Metal, well... hehe!
i'm not sure how my guitar sounds in mono. not sure i ever tried. or know how! ugh!
Glad you find my avatar memorable! took me a while to make. it looks better animated where the bull is pooping. no BS, if you know what i mean. hehe
and as for memory, well, i forget mine often. hehe.... thank you for your kind thoughts! much appreciated!

Great, great , great... &mdash 06/05/07 - 08:45:28 PM
Did I mention this is great? The instrumentation and arrangement is missing nothing. It allows space for the song to shine through. Lyrics are great, and the vocal performance is outstanding. Nice guitar sounds and playing. Something about this makes me think of Syd Barrett - which is a good thing. Whistling works. Very cool. Nice work. Peace. [ Reply to This ]
THANK YOU! &mdash 06/07/07 - 08:03:42 AM
wow! such praise! man, i'm humbled! thank you! echoes of Syd Barrett, eh? I will take that as the ultimate compliment! woohoo!

wow &mdash 06/05/07 - 08:59:44 PM
really impressed by this one. love the sparse arrangement, let's all the feeling come right through. the guitar sounds awesome too. have you ever listened to Skip Spence "Oar"? this is reallly great. [ Reply to This ]
THANK YOU! &mdash 06/07/07 - 08:18:36 AM
thank you for the kind thoughts, Michael2! not sure if you're comparing me to Skip Spence, but if so, then thank you! to be mentioned with his name is both a curse and a blessing, but one that i find humbling enough to respect. poor skip. Oar is one of those records you either know, or you don't know. most people don't know. unfortunately. hehe

What's that tuning? &mdash 06/05/07 - 10:03:32 PM
Duh, what is that tuning on the guitar?
Man, great song - your vocals are still great, doubling up on them works really nice on this one. I also like the whistling at the end
Another one of these melodies to get stuck in my head
Thanks

THANK YOU! &mdash 06/07/07 - 08:24:50 AM
first off, i broke the G string on my guitar and instead of just getting new strings, i retuned it to an open E chord and just played it as-is.
what occured was a host of new options. I finally got the new strings, but kept the E tuning. this song was one of the three or four that grew out of that decision. it's a song that i began playing without words and yet couldn't get out of my head. I "mccartney'd" the words just using random phrases. after about five weeks of playing it, i finally sat down and crafted the words based on what i'd been piecing together from playing it.
second, i double the vocal because i don't like the sound of my voice. doing so at least, for me, makes it easier to listen to without gagging. hehe
thank you so much for the kind thoughts on this one, Harold. your words mean a great deal to me. peace 2 u

I'm with &mdash 06/07/07 - 02:32:15 PM
the Syd Barrett/Skip Spence comparison, with some McCartney level-headedness added. And (or but) your sound is really crystal-clear.
[ Reply to This ]
THANK YOU! &mdash 06/07/07 - 03:44:54 PM
thanks for the feedback! McCartney level-headedness! LOL!
that clear quality is something i've been striving to find. i've found that the more stuff i try to layer into a song, the more i don't like what i'm hearing. not just hiss and such, but a seeming lack of polish and clarity.
by keeping the tracks and the instrumentation to a minimum, i'm finding i can better manage the quality and the levels of each element. i dunno. it works for me at this point! hehe... thanks again!

Very Interesting Rhythm &mdash 06/07/07 - 06:24:01 PM
I also love the melody and accompaniment. Excellent singing.
The melody veers betwen a sea chanty and, if done more slowly, something an eastern mystic might employ. [ Reply to This ]
THANK YOU! &mdash 06/07/07 - 08:24:51 PM
thank you as always, my friend! funny, i kept thinking it sounded like some kind of celtic song, but your ear is more astute than mine... the sea chanty is right on! good call!

Ever hear Ewan Maccoll and A.L. Lloyd's LP "Blow, Boys, Blow" ? (I know, pretty dicey title in today's vernacular.) I recommend it.

I know you intended for this to be minimalist, but I really want to hear a cello playing in there.
And the chord rhythm and structure has a sense of urgency ... not sure how to explain that, but it's almost as if this is building toward something else. It's not really a background tune -- I listened intently the whole way through. Your lyrics are mesmerising. This is sublime. [ Reply to This ]
THANK YOU! &mdash 06/09/07 - 09:17:07 AM
thank you, Miss Chaos! a sense of urgency is interesting. when i sit around and play this one, i play it with different tempos and temperatures. when i sat to record it, what you heard here is what came out. however, when i sit on my porch and play it, i use a much slower, fingerpicking style (mainly because i lost my pick!). this style is very, very mellow. i'm kind of glad i didn't record it like that because i think it may have been too slow. anyhow, thank you always for your kind words!

like the bolero kinda feel. Nice texture the guitar. Your voicing in interesting to hear. Like your high vocals as well.
Again, you captured a nice texture with the guitar as well as terrific voice.
Way to go. One of the best male vocals I"ve heard hear in a while at MJ.

I thoroughly enjoyed it. Some acoustic Beatles coming through on this tune. The guitar and singing are perfectly married to create something really cool...

Very well played and recorded. Great lyrics, I really like how "a million two faces" sounds; very hooky. I love the whistling, because once you've said something like this to yourself, there is no reason to kill yourself over it. Well written. [ Reply to This ]

Just when I can't take it any more &mdash 06/19/07 - 08:58:36 PM
here's another amazing song on MJ. I'm kinda running out of superlatives these days, but I'll give it a try. This is the bestest unclutteredest tune I've heard in a long time. The lyrics and vocals are tremendous - annd by making the structure and phrasing a bit more complicated than the average bear - you keep the simplicity of this song from being mundane. Far from it - it's actually fucking brilliant. [ Reply to This ]
cool song &mdash 06/28/07 - 07:13:47 AM
great tune. I was wondering. Did you double track your vocals? Or did you sing over the first track? Its a great sound whatever you did.
would you mind if I download this and try a string bass part?
Just for my pleasure. Thats all. Very cool song! [ Reply to This ]
