Description:
So....I really didn't set out to write a song about the "hollow earth," but I did want to combine ambient and acoustic elements in a mysterious, otherworldly-sounding track.
As I decided what to name it, the idea of "Hollow Earth" came to mind.
Wikipedia describes it so: "A Hollow Earth theory posits that the planet Earth has a hollow interior and, possibly, a habitable inner surface. At one time, adventure literature made this idea popular, and it was a popular feature of many fantasy and science fiction works as well as in some conspiracy theories. However, the hypothesis of a Hollow Earth has long been contradicted by overwhelming geodetic evidence as well as by the modern understanding of planet formation, and the scientific community now dismisses continued adherence to the notion as pseudoscience."
Enjoy :)

no singing? &mdash 06/06/07 - 03:18:01 AM
Well, the image and description goes hand in hand with the music. Could very well have been a soundtrack meant for a documentary on Discovery or to a science fiction movie.
I came to listen to a singing Mystified, but enjoyed listening to your music:) [ Reply to This ]
some singing.... &mdash 06/06/07 - 06:19:04 PM
...will likely be found in a remix of this. Biba_nova is working on another version, and I've sent him vocals to incorporate into the track, so stay tuned... :) [ Reply to This ]
Jules of a song &mdash 06/06/07 - 08:29:31 AM
Journey to the Center of the global brain. Who knows what good and evil lurk at the core?
Man drilled deep into the Earth.
God sad, "What where you doing under there?"
Man answered, "Underwear?"
God spat out finest Columbian coffee. Man called it brown rain. It is the stuff of legend. [ Reply to This ]

Thanks for your creative and thoughtful comments here, Rich :)
I wondered if someone would pick up on the Jules Verne connection.
Of course you did!

Little chocolate planets... &mdash 06/06/07 - 11:35:46 AM
What if it's really true... and the earth is hollow and made of chocolate...? Then at Easter you would give hollow chocolates earth planets instead of little bunnies.... right? Then you wouldn't have to bite the heads off the little chocolate bunnies, fill them full of milk, and drink down the chocolaty goodness...
Oh yes, by the way, I like this piece. It is very hollow indeed! [ Reply to This ]

Hey Cat! &mdash 06/06/07 - 12:30:18 PM
I knew some folks years ago that believed the Hollow Earth Theory. Certainly one of the stranger beliefs held by humans...This is an awesome soundtrack. Very similar in mood to Mungo's "Inevitable." Makes me want to look over my shoulder...ha ha...
Be well!

Thanks! &mdash 06/08/07 - 03:23:18 PM
Yes..the whole idea that there are unexplored and yet undiscovered realms is intriguing and spurs the imagination, doesn't it?
I also love storytelling and music that tells a story....so one might expect more songs like this from me.
Thank you. I'm glad you're enjoying the listens! :)

Hollow, indeed... &mdash 06/06/07 - 05:16:33 PM
...but in a good way.
I like your instrument choices in this one - especially when linked to the song title. And the eerie mysteriousness you were going for is here alright! Quite cool.
Your posts are always a pleasure to listen to.

especially with the story. Boy, does that story put a great intrigue to this. love the map too :^)
The earth with the whole is one of the best Mystical pics I've seen.
Way to go! Really like it. Again having that story and picture really jells to me and the music is the TOPPING OF THE CAKE! ! [ Reply to This ]

square waves in round holes &mdash 06/06/07 - 05:39:47 PM
Funny, I always thought square waves sounded very "hollow", and here you use square waves to represent a hollow earth... is this an auditory pun? It is effective... and open fifths too, which are ambiguously hollow. This sounds like a good ominous sketch for some'B'ody to add to, indeed.
So I ask you, if the Earth is not hollow, then where do they hide the Yeti, Sasquatch, Chupacabra, and the Loch Ness monster?

Square waves? &mdash 06/08/07 - 08:10:48 PM
So you got me on that one, and sent me on a search to listen to the different waveforms. Fascinating!
It's amazing what you take for granted sound-wise because you just figure out a good hollow sound is just a good hollow sound!
I enjoyed the lesson, and after listening to square, sine, triangle and sawtooth waves, I was still wondering how in heck you can 'hear' a certain wave sound.
I'll have to keep working on it ;)
Thanks for your comments--always enjoyable to read!
(And I think that Sasquatch and Yeti are vacationing near Antares this year...)

Eerie and intriguing &mdash 06/06/07 - 07:29:58 PM
Mysti, this is a really interesting (albeit brief) contribution. I'd love to hear how this develops over 30 minutes or so (when you have nothing better to do of course) ;)
Your composition skils seem to be on (yet another) upward phase.

Hi Mysti:) &mdash 06/06/07 - 08:15:31 PM
This is an interesting piece.... I love that it has a melancoly (SP?), mood to it. I have heard that Jules Vernes, "Journey to the Center of the Earth" was filmed in Iceland..... I was always intrigued by that movie. Now all I can think of is the constant mining, of ever sort of elements, coal, and oil.....and it kind of makes me mad.....you know, taking all this from inside.....because if we do, it will soon be a hollow earth won't it? :D)* Great songs, I miss your voice too :D [ Reply to This ]
Hollowly hollow &mdash 06/13/07 - 08:29:29 PM

Okay, first off... &mdash 06/06/07 - 08:17:38 PM
...I HATE when you buy a chocolate planet, and especially when you pay a decent price for it, and then you get it home and when you bite into it, it's hollow... And usually, bits of chocolate continent and crust and mantle are all splintered down the front of your shirt... I hate that...
And thank you SO MUCH for reminding me...
And if the Earth IS hollow, AND made of chocolate, what ARE the implications of global warming? What's THAT going to do to the front of my shirt?
MUST I think of all of these things MYSELF?...
Much as this reminds me, now that I've been prompted, of 'Journey To the Center Of The Earth', which I had the Classic Comic of when I was a child... it also, once again, reminds me of those lovely, round, hollow tones that you encounter in Myst and offshoots every time you go underground into a new, hollow, echoing, cavernous space...
You might consider posting that in the 'Musical Roots' forum up there to the left...
You are doing some interesting sonic woodshedding Mysti... I have the feeling that there's the 'usual, vocal Mystified', and then there's this other thing gestating at a geological pace that is going to have some wonderful moments of intertwining and surprise in the future...

Hollow Earths and Myst &mdash 06/13/07 - 08:35:49 PM
Ahhhh....Ed.....you've discovered my secret!
I am a sucker for the music of Myst and Riven. That sort of haunting, sometimes creepy, always spacious ambient music that made you look over your shoulder if you happened to be playing those games in a room all by yourself.
As I've said above, I love it when music paints a picture, tells a story, or encourages the listener to visualize other worlds and imaginary places.
I have a book, "The Dictionary of Imaginary Places," which I like to browse through every now and then. I suppose music like this is a 'soundtrack' to such imaginings.
Thanks for listening, Ed :) [ Reply to This ]

I shouldn't have read the other comments, now I am hungry.
I like the colors you used to paint the soundscape with.
I'm fond of the vibraslap sound too. It's the cowbell of 2007. [ Reply to This ]

I'm glad you caught the elements that I was trying to combine: the synth in this 'otherworldly' sense and the percussive elements that were very 'earthbound.'

Still ringing in the air ... &mdash 06/09/07 - 07:20:24 PM
I love atmospheric stuff like this! The synth sound is kind of unsettling and dynamic at the same time. The knocked-back drum sounds give it a further dark edge. Nicely conceived. [ Reply to This ]
Intriguing. &mdash 06/10/07 - 03:02:41 AM
Your "journey to the center of the earth" reminds me of a prog rock band (I don't remember who) who wrote something called "Journey to the Center of the Mind". In my interpretation of your piece the earth is a metaphor of the mind. This is a highly introspective piece. It's a solitary journey of self-discovery. Well done. [ Reply to This ]
very &mdash 06/10/07 - 12:28:00 PM
cool track.....though I do believe in the possibility of a hollow earth.....
the reasons are too numerous to list here....but there may be more to it than we have been told......have a look for yourself.....but your song is a perfect fit for the title.....cool to a fool like me

"Hollow Earth"... &mdash 06/12/07 - 11:19:46 AM
...to my mind, is an excellent title. And the artwork's awesome.
Your musical intent is crystal clear, here. Mysterious and otherwordly. Stepping into another space...right there.
As the the Wikipedia's "description"? Don't believe it. It's been proven that the creators/denizens of said cyberspace encyclopedia and the entire "scientific community" they refer to are actually representatives of the ruling elite of that poor, oppressed inner kingdom.
Take my word for it... [ Reply to This ]
Hollow man (and woman) &mdash 06/12/07 - 02:46:55 PM
Hey Mysti - this is a dark, sombre piece, perfectly fitting the title. i love the percussion in the background ... feels like someone tapping to get out of the ground. this feels like music to a David Lynch movie ... a sense of something not quite right ...

i love how you introduce the tune with the description. Hollow Earth is a great title for the song you have created.
I have to say that I admire you as an artist. You not only have a beautiful voice but you can create beautiful music too! I do miss your voice but definately appreciate the tune on it's own. Great job [ Reply to This ]

like a BMW in the bad part of town,
but it sounds so cool.
Nice composition in the music. You keep the notes moving in interesting ways, and my ears are happy.
You should play with the percussion some more, it has lots of potential for movement, like your melody and harmonies.
