Keywords:
melancholy (57)lo-fi (34) ()
Description:
This is another slightly mellow tune, with harmonies and textural touches. I used a casio toy keyboard for most of the instrumentation and some stuff that was laying around my studio area that i hadn't used yet. Picture Mojave 3 or Sparklehorse, or half of the other sad songs i've posted.

recorded this on my zoom digital 8 track and tried to clean it up a bit in GB. i had to record all of the casio stuff with a mic on it's little speaker (for some reason whenever i tried plugging it in i kept getting a korean radio station), but sounds pretty good in a lo-fi way in my phones and monitors, but a little muffly in the car. you be the judges.

Hardware:
a big wierd casio was used for: the drum track and the echoey keyboard part (I miked one of the little 2" speakers); i also used the jazz organ and electric guitar sounds on it, and the clicky sounds are a guitar pick being run over the ridges on the plastic speakers with some delay on. for delay i used a dod digital delay pedal.

i also used my tele and epiphone univalve amp, a cheap danelectro tremolo pedal, metal slide, ibanez bass, a bell that was part of a cat toy,and my old SM57.

Software:
GB

this one's &mdash 06/07/07 - 03:28:29 AM
especially moving. I like the organ texture and the echoing bell (?) sounds.

for stopping by. i'm glad that you like this one, wish i had recorded it a little better, but it gets the point across.

I was going to say.... &mdash 06/07/07 - 02:34:43 PM
...that this song reminded me SO much of Mojave 3 as I started to listen to it. Then I read your song notes and saw that you mentioned them in that first paragraph.

Wow. What a great mood and vibe you've created with this song.
Awesome :)
Gotta find my "Excuses for Travellers" CD and listen again....

Thanks. I really enjoyed this one :)

you familiar with the pygmalion record? it's the last slowdive record, but it may as well be an electronic/ambient mojave 3 record. thanks for listening and saying hi.

Mmmm....Slowdive..... &mdash 06/07/07 - 07:12:09 PM
A friend of mine introduced me to Slowdive, and I've heard most of the songs from the albums "Holding Our Breath" and "Souvlaki" but I've not heard any from Pygmalion. I will have to look into that one.

(On the other hand, I think it would be fun to do a 'wall of sound' shoegaze piece like "Golden Hair" or "Albatross")

i used to be in a band that did a shoegaze version of the old America chestnut "Sister Golden Hair." No one ever knew what it was.

beautiful and sublime &mdash 06/07/07 - 05:43:23 PM
Your voice sounds great on this (must be that new mic!). The homemade sounds work so well. Lovely...

thoughts from the bull... &mdash 06/07/07 - 09:08:20 PM
i have to agree that this is an especially moving piece due to the considerate and tender emotion of the music. your vocal merely fills in another dimension of that and does so nicely.

this was a joy to come across and has left a definite impression on me. very inspiring... so much that you want everyone to know about it!

an easy download which i'm going to revel in frequently.

thank you very much for this one!

thanks very much &mdash 06/08/07 - 01:17:28 AM
i'm so happy that you liked this, especially since I almost didn't post it. the sound quality definitely could be better, but i'm always leery of re-recording stuff as it always seems to lose the original intent. thanks so much for stopping by.

Mojave 3 &mdash 06/11/07 - 08:21:17 PM
I'm a big Mojave 3 fan and this does remind me a good bit of them. I do wish I could hear a bit more of the vocals, its so muted especially with the low res casio's which tend not to breathe well. Pretty cool though.

Nice atmospheric piece &mdash 06/11/07 - 09:47:59 PM
I think if you tried to re-record this, it would lose something of the feeling that I think comes across here. Terrific sound, and haunting vocal performance. The list of things you used for sounds is truly inspired (and inspiring). Very nice work. Sad, in a good way. Peace.

sounds great with headphones &mdash 07/03/07 - 01:27:57 PM
but I can tell it would be a little bottom heavy in the car.
great lyrics.
You always have the coolest sounds going on there somewhere, and everything always meshes quite nicely.
i've always been a little envious of your production skills.
good work.
