Oh, I know it's synthed or sampled or something... &mdash 06/07/07 - 08:38:46 PM
...but I really like that acoustic guitar thing that plays against the more obvious synthy and keyboard-y elements...
I don't think I heard this in its first incarnation. It's lovely...

thanks Ed &mdash 06/08/07 - 09:13:55 AM
That's a very reassuring comment. Of course I struggle with my limited abilities, including the inability to play and record acoustic guitar (one of my favorite instruments). So I toy with the idea of letting the synthesized version sound deliberate rather than trying to hide it. The verdict's still out on that one, though I know I'm not fooling anyone with it. :-) My synth guitar is much better than my air guitar. :-) Thanks again!

Reminds me of some of the vibes on the Play album by Moby (and also of Mysti and mine's 'The Sound and Shape of the Words')
I would love to hear the original...is that possible? [ Reply to This ]
Hey Brin &mdash 06/08/07 - 09:38:07 AM
Thanks so much for your comments. Yeah, that's not the first Moby comparison I've heard on this song. It's a good possibility I was influenced by that album as I discovered it before the conception of this tune. I have to go listen to the song you mentioned here... Oh, and the original is streaming from a few other sites as well as iTunes Stores, Napster & Rhapsody (anyone use that one anymore?) Thanks!

i think the last time i critiqued this song, i rec'd my first email from missC-how life has changed since then ;)
to my ears, this version retains (& builds on) the emotive quality of the original, this time offering a more joyous & positive mood, & forecasting a wealth of happy days on that endless horizon ahead..

An excellent sounding mix... &mdash 06/08/07 - 12:27:53 AM
This mix is full of all the sound goodies that I enjoy.
It's make-up is firm yet delicate and the sweeping sounds and keyboard sounds fit together so well.
Presence without pretence.
The musics' 'new life' has set it free.
Brilliant.
The silence at the end was the only disappointment.
Take care.
Paul.

Oh the dilemmas... &mdash 06/08/07 - 07:36:24 AM
You've put me in a tough place here, MissC. You've gone and mucked with one of your best pieces! Now I feel compelled to critique... some of this will be simply because I've listened to your iTunes version of this a lot and am used to it, and others are more objective... if one can be objective on such an emotional piece.
So, first the bad. It sounds like in some places you have a phaser effect applied to either the whole mix or at least to a number of instruments, which gives a "muddy" or "distorted cassette tape" feel to those little spots (near the beginning of the piece). It was noticeably disorienting in headphones. The increased tempo reduces some of the melancholy punch that this piece had, although it is hinted at at the very very end, where it sounds like you slowed back down. The increased presence of the drums also detracts some from the gentle quiet introspective nature of the original piece. It's more in-your-face now... which might be OK in parts, maybe fade the drums out more often? At this faster pace, the strings sound more synthy, they don't keep up well, or you didn't spend time tweaking their attack to sound more realistic.
Good parts:
-countermelodies in strings better, I like the extended notes here and there that create anticipation.
-the drums sound awesome in the mix, whole mix sounds richer.
-the piece is longer? It sounds like you added some stuff, so I can revel in a it a little more before it ends.
-the ending was very nicely done, good shift of pace and instruments, pauses, final soft note.
So overall, I'm afraid I don't like this one quite as much as your prior one, but I really like some of the elements, and think you are right, that with your even greater knowledge and talents now, you should work on this in some of the directions you are choosing. It is a very powerful piece of music... written by a great mama.

rest assured &mdash 06/08/07 - 11:26:42 AM
It was not my intention to put anyone in a tough place. :-) I've added a little disclaimer up in the description because I truly don't want anyone to be disappointed. This mix does not replace the original. The original will always be untouched. This is just a derivative - Same skeleton, new skin. I felt compelled to create a new mix for many reasons - the least of which is that it's therapeutic for me.
A few things:
There are no phasers in this whatsoever. Other like-sounding effects? Yes, and only on one instrument, and deliberately so. You mentioned the drums effecting the gentle/quiet nature. Again, yes. Hence, the "mix" description. The point was to bring this up in mood. And the strings, well I wasn't trying to fool anyone. Same goes for the guitar timbre.
Glad you liked the new ending. I thought of it as a cinematic approach: the hint of more to come, and reflecting on just how far we can go beyond our difficult times.
It was fun taking this older tune and re-designing it. It felt like I was engineering something new from something old. The question for me was, "Can I change the mood of this song without interrupting the structure and flow?"
Anyhow, sorry for my long-windedness. I always appreciate the time you spend listening and feeling. I'm grateful, eduard. thank you!

What crystal clear definition you acheive in all the sounds produced.I like the meandering piano line - carries the rhythm along like a wheel in an engine.I love music that has a 'travelling without actually physically moving' to it - that usually means if you are travelling physically that it is the perfect music to play - like driving through the mountains at sunset, with a really good stereo system in your car/or in my case on my bicycle.Beautiful and perfect for a summer evening on a Friday night in the uk. I've always loved this piece. Nice work on the remix. Definitely more sonic depth and wonderful choice of timbres. It's nice to hear another MissC work (even if it's a remix!) There is a nice balance between the originally melancholy of the original and the more upbeat and hopeful sound of the new version...

Hi Doug &mdash 06/09/07 - 09:56:02 AM
Lush - and I don't mean someone with an alchol problem &mdash 06/08/07 - 12:09:31 PM
Outstanding details and very thoughtful orchestration. Great use of low-frequencies and sub-bass - very subtle in many places and well-balanced. The shelving and levels of the mix is really top-notch.
I think the impression of "muddiness" is a reaction to a few passages wherein the strings and synths cut out and the remaining instruments are generally affected as if by a lowpass filter. The disappearance of the "airy" frequencies changes the tonal character. I actually love production details like this and think the change works well.
Now go do something loud and rude! Have you heard "Declare Independence" off Bjork's latest? She claims to have approached it as a joke, but so far it's my favorite track on the album. [ Reply to This ]

once again, you really pick up on the small things that go into my tunes. I like that you listen on this level. I could spend 14 hours on two measures -- and I can count on you to notice and comment on it. Thank you! Loud and rude may be next in the hopper for me. I will make a point to find and hear that Bjork tune!

...it's so full of feeling and expression, and it is undeniably "Miss Chaos."
This remix is just beautiful, too. It can be refreshing to take something 'finished' and look at it from a different point of view, and I love that you've given this song another perspective--one that is a little brighter, a little more brisk, a little more 'sparkly.'
:)

Fresh &mdash 06/08/07 - 07:18:57 PM
I'm afraid I tend to listen to instrumental music "in the moment" and rarely remember a non-vocal piece longer than the proverbial goldfish and the castle ("oh look, a castle" swims around the bowl, "oh look a castle" etc, etc, ad infinitum!). I do however remember this one of yours - although the details are a little fuzzy.
I like this new version - there are lots of fresh things happening, but overall I like the uplifting tone/feel. Made my otherwise cold and dreary day ;)

Neil, I really do appreciate your thoughts here. I sometimes wonder how different my songs would be if I could: a. Sing well, and, b. Write lyrics. I'd probably have a whole new batch of things to obsess over, but also a whole new depth to my music. I'm awfully jealous of you singer/lyric writer types. :-) Thanks so much!

hmmm, new directions... &mdash 06/08/07 - 10:40:36 PM
I really do like the old mix very much, and this is actually quite different in mood. Maybe this one should be 'Mama Smiles', because I think you really have a much more positive vibe in this one. It's like a character in a movie who begins in a bit of a struggle (Mama Cries - original), and by the end has conquered their problems - not without some sacrifice and pain along the way. (Mama Cries - new mix).
I'm not sure the drums need to be quite so loud at some points, although I like their presence. Other instruments are similar to your original, and very well placed.
I like your point about this being a derivative. I did a similar thing with Silk Brocade & Organic Silk last month. Sometimes there are just too many directions to travel with a fist full of musical ideas, so you have to take more than one trip. [ Reply to This ]
i like that idea... &mdash 06/10/07 - 10:50:24 AM
Mama Smiles. I'm curious, as I will tweak this for a new album and because I really value your opinion, Do you think the overall volume of percussion is too loud? Or is it just the 'bass' parts? You said only certain parts -- so I'm wondering if lowering it overall would help or just tweak certain frequencies in certain parts. if you have time to elaborate great! if not, I still really appreciate your feedback. it is all considered tenderly. :-) Thanks, Kristine!

Woweee! This is classy stuff. I haven't heard the original so I come to it from an unbiased viewpoint. The melody is beautiful and sits so comfortably on top of the much stronger and harder percussion ... quite a skill to combine the two so elegantly. The section in the middle where the strings come in is sweetness itself. I love the way you move so smoothly from the chirpy melodic to the heartachingly sad.
Really superb creativity and musicianship. [ Reply to This ]

hey missy - what a cool steely blue track - lovely melodies and great use of atmospherics, whilst the drums keep it nicely grounded. i didn't hear the original, but this is a great mix. Great structure to thsi - I love the drop out with the strings and guitars coming in. I can't decide if this would suit a vocal or not - its has such strong melodies, I'm not sure it would play. Really glad you remixed and reposted this!

Free and peaceful but sad. &mdash 06/10/07 - 11:20:35 AM
Your software instruments sound great and really work well together. That's probably the best fake nylon string guitar I've ever heard. The piano shimmers. The strings are obviously synth, but they work so well in your mix because it sounds like you pan two string tracks differently or something. This is a full, crisp mix that sounds wonderful in headphones. It's sort of grounded but totally soars above the clouds. Personally I wouldn't change anything. I love the swirling synth effects.
