OK, now you've done it. Opening the doors to the 32 cassette tapes of 4-track mixdowns I have been too shy to post.

This is cool. LOVE the poink poinking drum machine. Classic! I have some tapes with a tiny original Dr. Rhythm machine that sounds just like it.
Blast from the past.

Philip

I can't believe how cool &mdash 06/11/07 - 10:09:36 AM
I thought that "doinking" was back then. Bring on the vintage tapes - something really dated.

are so no wave. that bass part, the drum machine, and those guitars. perfection; i love this kind of thing. sounds like the lower east side '86 (did some time on ave. D around then).

Thanks Michael &mdash 06/11/07 - 10:12:38 AM
I tried really hard to be cool back then - it was a full time job with lots of competition. This was just one of my ploys.

Bud: The Early Years! &mdash 06/08/07 - 10:11:56 PM
Ha! You'll have to do a bootleg album now Bud. Dated...but very cool. You been at this awhile friend. This is pretty nice, but I hope you get some free time soon. I know what it's like to be too busy to write and record. I start getting backed up!

Be well bro!

the real bootlegs are the double boombox recording I made in my bathroom before I got the 4track.

lucky &mdash 06/08/07 - 10:55:10 PM
i never had a recorder in '86. or a mustang. or a cool riff like this. or a apartment in NY. or a tr808 drum machine. or a bass. lucky.

ANYWHOS, cool blend of punk and new wave. and a clickish drum sound. fun!

It's one of the tracks Miami Vice rejected. Their loss.

This is amazing considering the vintage. Lots of stuff happening that I would never have thought of - this is from some genre I haven't experienced, and I like the groove a lot. That wandering bass feel is excellent.

cause I was probably lost - everything I did back then was a happy accident. Gee - not much has changed in all these years.

Love the guitar tuning/untuning sound on the mustang. Did you hang out with Thurston and Kim back in the day?

I like it!

Thanks for sharing, bud!

I shared a bill or two - &mdash 06/11/07 - 10:26:22 AM
with Sonic Youth - but we didn't hang together. This was after my club days - when I set up a home studio and had friends come by and play. Primary among them was Kevlar from JOAN.

'Poink poink' drum machines... I really remember those days! This is great stuff, Bud, and it really takes me back. Did you have a 'Flock Of Haircuts' look while you were playing it too?

I'd love to hear archive music from MacJammers, some of whom produce 'polished and pro' music that shames anything on the radio today. I swore my own 'archive stuff' would never see the light of day, but now I'm listening to them with a different attitude.

You might have started something here, Bud!

I had a David Bowie wedge dyed &mdash 06/11/07 - 10:32:05 AM
red and wore understated mascara on stage.

I suggest that next memorial day we have a "Vintage Music Festival" where everyone posts their earliest, most embarrassing efforts - along with a picture from that period.

very chromatic - in a way &mdash 06/10/07 - 12:22:11 PM
love the sound of that guitar - were you using some open tuning here? DADGAD or such?

thanks

[ Reply to This ]
No open tuning here &mdash 06/11/07 - 10:53:24 AM
No detuning either - just my atonal lead playing. I was probably trying to emulate Arto Lindsay of DNA - or just stoned.

great band. To answer your other question: by '86 my scene was pretty mellow - nothing heavy.

Oh does this take me back... &mdash 06/11/07 - 07:51:34 AM
...although I had a Fostex X-15, and then a Yamaha something or other...and, I think, a DR or TR 303 drum machine...and a Stinger (imported from Korea by MARTIN!) bass...

All the joys and sorrows of working with cassette tape...

I'm wih Neil on liking the bass line, and I'm also interested in that detuned sound from the Mustang...Manages to get a very 'live' feel against the lockstep of the drum machine...

Glad you posted this...

I loved the 4track. I got into it pretty heavy and managed to bounce down stereo to another machine and come back for more - p to 8 or 10 tracks. Keeping the noise down was an issue - but often noise wasn't a problem - it was part of the solution.

This one is pretty sraightforward. 4 tracks - period.

Sounds of the times &mdash 06/11/07 - 11:36:36 AM
wow bud - that drum machine brings back memories .... this sounds not unlike what me and some friends were doing back in about the same era. Sounds like a live jam, with some guys under the influence ... those were the days!

but these days are pretty cool too. GarageBand/MJ was a great find for me. I had pretty much packed away the old studio and went back to my old acoustic for about 15 years. Not that you could tell - when I pick up that guitar today.
Thanks for checking in - I dig your latest tune.
