Keywords:
palm wine (2)africa (9)mali (1)relaxed. hal david (1)
Description:
I got taken with this tonight. It's noisy (who said computers were clean) and it's one take.

I've always listened to lots of African music and there's a guy called S.E. Rogie who I saw many years ago who was one of the great exponents of what they call "palm wine" music (due to the milky alcoholic drink popular in Mali and such places) and I loved his wonderfully laid back style. I use 3 fingers and he used 2 but hey, it's rock'n'roll man ;)

I was watching the roots of heavy metal on the BBC tonight and came up with this setting for a song that's been knocking about for a while, go figure.

It's a pretty rough, noisy recording but I have had more than one drink tonight. I might record it when I'm a little more sober sometime ;) Then again I think it might reflect the kind of sound I would have got had it been recorded in Bamako in the 60s on an old reel to reel after having sampled the palm wine. Just me, a mic and my old classical guitar in one take.

A box of soiled tissues to the person to whoever spots the common theme......

I know S. E. Rogie from Sierra Leone, I have his cd, good influence to have!

not Mali. One day I'll get the countries right. I'm very pleased you enjoyed it.

you'll never be able to recreate the immediacy and intimate mood of this recording! There is emotion and tenderness in the singing and however "rough" you may think the recording is, it sounds remarkably together. I like this song a lot. Peace.

P.S. I love the references to the David/Bacharach songs in each verse. Cool.

Get A Room &mdash 06/11/07 - 08:18:43 AM
Hey Dick why don't you and Vic get a room.

I'm trying to enjoy this perfectly beautiful song and you two keep going on and on about peeking through curtains and nakedness and creepy stuff like that.

Anyway, be sure to post the link to the webcam. Huh?

Hey Dick - this has an immediacy and intimacy that's just heartbreaking. I love the spoken intro - it's just like having you play live to me. A gorgeous little track - thanks for such an honest, tender little tsong.

Nice &mdash 06/10/07 - 04:54:06 PM
song - I love this 'one take' rendition - I don't think i'd dare upload one of mine - I like to hide behind production. Love the spoken intro and outro. In fact I like everything about this very much indeed. Thanks for posting.

It's one extreme to the other for me. Either just me and a guitar or else a massive production :-)

This is beautiful, Dick! You sing expressively and from the heart, and I'd enjoy an evening of this kind of music played live.

Alcohol can cover up &mdash 06/13/07 - 12:38:08 PM
a multitude of sins but in this case it relaxed me enough just to sing unconsciously. Not an approach I would particularly recommend.

Comments much appreciated.

Really sweet tune... &mdash 06/12/07 - 09:51:48 AM
...played and sung beautifully, Dick.

If you want to do it again when you're "dry", that's fine. Then again...you might want to try it when you're a bit further along in that bottle of wine. See what you come up with there...

;-)

Very nice, guy...really enjoyed this.

Love this .. &mdash 06/15/07 - 07:55:19 AM
..style of playing Dick. A brave decision to play "naked with the curtains open" - hmmmmm, the psychologist in me notes this in my diary ;) You really managed to carry this off very well. Love the talking at the start and end - puts me better in touch with who you are. That same evil witch got me too!
Great post, really enjoyed listening.

Those witches are a real problem ;-)

I wonder if with all this technology at our disposal we forget how to play live. It's been some time since I sat down in front of an audience and just played songs. No retakes, no stopping 'cos you forgot the words. It's stiffened my resolve to get out and do some open mic nights before I lose the ability :-)

Cheers

Oooh, a live performance &mdash 06/16/07 - 08:47:05 AM
This is really beautifully performed ... the sincerity of the emotion comes shining through any "noisiness" (which really doesn't bother me anyway ... I ain't no audio nerd). It's honest, upfront, intimate and full of heart. But it's also extremely good. You have some real talent there, and a lot of guts to lay it on the line so openly.

It's quite different from the other songs of yours I've heard and I'm very impressed with the richness of your singing, and there's some very fine guitar work too. I hope you'll feel moved to do more of these.

I watched that BBC heavy metal thing too, just for the nostalgia value of getting squidged against the stage at Iron Maiden gigs in the early 80s.

High praise indeed &mdash 06/18/07 - 04:18:56 PM
Considering I spent 25 years playing live in folk clubs and hundreds of gigs I still worry about playing a solo piece. Nowhere to run and all that. As I said to Neil, I'm going to do a few open mic nights before I get too scared :-)

Your comments are much appreciated.

Squidged against the stage eh? Have you no shame ;-)

Cheers

Dick
