Description:
My first go at at LIOLI challenge and Ok, it's a long one. 7 minutes total. I have about a 2 and a half minute intro which leads into the meat and rockin' part of the tune so please be patient. The loops for the LIOLI really inspired me and I used my Yamaha Motif 7 for the first time in a long time. This is kind of Dream Theater meets Rush with some Floyd thrown in here and there. I hope you like it. LOILI rules!!

A lot of good &mdash 06/10/07 - 03:51:04 PM
things going on in this song especially some killer guitar. You're right we do have a lot of the same influences.

cool stuff, chunky, metal groove and very smooth performance- mystic journey does come across very well.

Something in that 'hanging' C# in the repeated lead (I think) made
me think of and re-look up the use of the 'hanging' B in this post: http://www.macjams.com/song/17463 from alanfraser, I mean that was the thing that struck a chord .. er .. so to speak .. hmm .. I'll shut up now.

Intro did go on a bit .. but all round, I enjoyed it :o)

for the comments. Interested to hear more on the hanging B. I am self taught so I don't know a lot about theory. Maybe you can enlighten me. :)

I'm self taught too .. hence, I have to try to explain
what I mean with lots of ''s :o) .. I just meant how you play a series of faster notes first in that repeated lead pattern, and end the pattern with the last note being held longer, kinda 'hanging' at the end. It makes for a real sweet note and places a fair bit of focus on it, as the pattern before leads up to it. Any clearer? lol no? oh, nevermind ..perhaps there is some real term for this, but I won't be the one to be able to tell ya. :o) .. it (I think?) was this aspect that made
me think of 'some' similarity to something alanfraser did in his little lead riff in the post I mentioned.

Mysterious &mdash 06/11/07 - 11:47:24 AM
Here comes the train. Really cool guitar playing, Glenn! I dig the contrasts between the floating and tinkling cloudlike stuff and the chunky and wailing guitar. Some gigantic drum fills would make this even more DT/Rush, but perhaps the meditative groove works better. Great work, man.

most excellent &mdash 07/01/07 - 02:24:19 PM
the intro is very PF'ish

love the flute loop's melody being brought in on synth and guitar first. genious! sets up the loop perfectly. this achieves a mystical feeling as the intro resolves and we get into the core of the song

the guitar is fantastic! it's way out there in intergalactic space

i like how the ending brings us back to "reality"

the mystical feeling came across for you. I was really trying to do that with the intro and create a journey. Thanks for the comments!

How that guitar does the works. Great sounds and the changes of beats that still fit in with the instruments is marvellous. Very like a soundtrack and worth the wait for the nitty gritty, though I was still entertained by the intro, M

This is incredible... your guitar work is superb. It's well worth the time devoted to hearing it. Nice balance between the 'spacey synths' and the 'snarly guitars' but if Rush's an influence then that's familiar territory.

Your use of the loop is extraordinary. Excellent entry!

Here is another example of a well made, fully inspired beautiful track just from a sample and the LIOLI challenge. That fact that it is 7 minutes helps with the build up, and creates lovely soundscapes. I know I'm repeated what has already been said, but it needs to be said 'excellent entry'.

I really like the idea of having to come up with a song around one particular loop. It really helps you to be creative and get out of any rut you may be in. I wish we did these every week!! :) I am definately going to do as many of these as I can.

I've been listening to all the LIOLI entries today, and I am very much struck (and impressed!) by YOUR submission.

It has a very agreeable "flow", along with being nicely mixed. Your choice of sounds is excellent!

This is definitely one of the best handlings of the contest material.

Love the sounds, esp the intro. Very exotic and full of imagery. Reminded me a lil of David Gilmour's solo stuff. You get a great tone and the sound overall is expertly produced. Has an excellent atmosphere - arena meets evocative ambience. Love the drums. Solid through out!

Around 4 mins in when the guitar really started to pick up I was reminded of alot of guitarist I enjoy especially Steve Vai for some reason. I really enjoyed this piece. It flows like a Dream Theatre song. Im seeing alot of future success and potential in you!
