Keywords:
love (904)loss (33)sad (126)ballad (126)guitar (831)soul (77)blues (339)
Description:
A soulful ballad, about a guy who is losing the girl he loves, and he knows he can't stop it from happening. Even more, the song is about loss... the loss we can't control, but somehow have the strength to face.

I do the vocal, acoustic guitar, bass, with thoddi sitting in on electric guitar and organ. Drums-loops. The chord progression is a classic one that was more common years ago in soul and R&B. Right up Thor's alley.

(My wife likes the song and hopes you all won't think this is about us) : )

Lyrics:
Just Go
by Jack Miller 2007

Maybe it's me,
But I've got this feeling.
There's somethng I need to know.
Girl, can you tell me,
What's on your mind?
Do you want me love or want to go?

Cause latey the small things are speaking so loud.
How you no longer reach for my hand.
And just the other day as you went out the door,
You didn't turn to say goodbye,
To this man.

Instrumental

What I'm trying to say.
Sitting here with you,
As you turn your eyes away.
Though my love for you,
Still rests in my heart,
If you want to go then,
Please don't stay.

What we had was a precious thing.
But there's no use in pretending... no, no.
Has the music stopped for you?
Is this the last dance... well, then
Please just go.

Thanks, Bill. Once I started with these chords, it seemed the melody and lyrics almost wrote themselves. I appreciated the comment on the lyrics and singing.

It is sad, isn't it... &mdash 06/11/07 - 04:08:29 PM
I don't know why those lyrics came forth. I think mainly because the chord progression has those two minor chords and the chords are patterned in a kind of melancholic way. The song is really about loss... loss we can't control, but can face. I'm glad you enjoyed it.

Great start &mdash 06/11/07 - 04:33:06 PM
- and some terrific singing Jack. Really enjoying Thor's guitar and keys which really work well with the structure you set up Jack. If I was a nit-picky type, I'd probably suggest a little more volume on the bass. I might also mention the hiss on the vocal track which kind of distracts - maybe you could record the vocals a little hotter to overcome this?
Excellent song guys - really enjoyed it.

your "studio recording" ear and your skill at mixing... and while I'm at it, an upgrade from GarageBand 1. Yes a good start. Sums up a number of my songs. Yet this is a pretty satisfying outing for me. The chords, melody, and lyrics came together quite well... and it was in a very good key for this old vocal box... and of course thoddi's choice contributions. Getting rid of hiss is so elusive for me. When I almost get there I figure, hey! that's pretty good!!
heheh...
Thanks, Neil. You inspire me.

A really nice song Jack, you've been a busy boy. Thor really stepped up to the plate with the organ and some mighty fine guitar lines.

Excellent work from both of you guys!

When I listen this really brings to mind some very early Hall & Oates. When they were in their acoustic period. I don't know if you ever heard any of those early albums but this would fit very well in there. And that to me definately ain't a bad place to be in the company of.

[ Reply to This ]
Not as busy... &mdash 06/12/07 - 11:28:29 AM
as you, Vicar... and yes, Thor mightily stepped up to the plate and to continue the metaphor, knocked it out of the park.

I am not familiar with the early acoustic Hall and Oates. I will have to check it out. But those guys put together some fine soulful music. They are what we in Philadelphia used to call "blue-eyed soul brothers!" So, this is a nice compliment on the song. Thanks mucho.

the "D" phrasing... &mdash 06/12/07 - 11:37:47 AM
Is there any other way to truly phrase a lyric...? :)

I can't say enough for Thor's contribution on this song. This really is a collaboration, as he put into this tune exactly what it needed and nothing more. He was very in touch with the style and feel of the song.

I am glad you liked the rhythm acoustic... I am assuming you know it really was the Martin DM... but your Applause comment made me chuckle. More jovial mileage to be had with that reference.

The song fit my singing style as well as any I have done, so I'm glad you thought it sounded good. I am not sure what your last sentence means... but I like it...
Thanks, Ed.

It's about some other sad soul who needs a handi-wipe. Yeah, this is bluesy soulstuff. I envy your early start in music performance. I missed out on so much by putting away my stinky little nylon string guitar after college and not picking it up again until 30 years later. I still barely know how to play and sing. I am good at listening, though. Got me some good earphones.

Sorry it took so long to get here bro...Waylaid by controversy again!

Anyway, you're right. This is very much in the classic mode. The sound is good here. Your vox is in top form. You sound very relaxed and your phrasings are precise and appropos. Having Thoddi sittin' in was an inspired choice. The guitar licks are exceptionally tasty. The man knows what to play, when to play it and when to hang back! His simple organ chords are also quite effective and add depth and extra pathos. A very pleasant listen!

Be well!

I don't know how I overlooked this. &mdash 06/12/07 - 07:57:38 PM
This is a truely amazing song. I will definitely have to listen to it again LOUDER when I get home from work. The thing that most impresses me is the electric guitar. What is that? Whammy bar, tremolo pedal, leslie rotating speaker? I have no idea what effect is used on that guitar, but it's amazing. It reminds me of a classic song who's artist I don't know called "Sleep Walk" that was later covered by Joe Satriani. I like your voice because it is so completely different from how I sing. The acoustic sounds good - I'm not sure what you're doing; it sounds simple but doesn't sound like the usual boring cowboy chords. The mix is outstanding: I especially like where the organ sits in the mix. I can't think of anything I don't like about this. Even the drum loops work well.

[ Reply to This ]
whammy &mdash 06/13/07 - 10:01:42 AM
...or, not sure if that's what a Floyd Rose tremolo bar is called. But that is what I've used on this one, together with a dash of reverb, echo and a tad crunch..

Thanks for nice review:)

yer on the top of yer game Jack.

I like how the song tells a story in very few, well-chosen words without the music getting in the way.

really liked the metaphor "has the music stopped for you" and the underlying suggestion that "she" isn't the only one who's had enough of the relationship.

I take your compliments as honest feedback as you aren't one to be flowery or overboard... more of one who calls them as he sees them. I think I was a bit lucky here. Sometimes some chords and some words click together. No real game plan. The main planning part was asking thoddi to jump in, knowing this song was right in his sphere of talent. I knew he would add just the right touches. He didn't disappoint, did he!

You made me chuckle on your last comment about me and my wife... well, I am very lucky there too.
