Description:
Hi everyone, yes it's Daphna uploading a song! I wrote this song a couple of years ago when I was briefly a TAXI member, for one of their listings. After that time, having it sit on the shelf seemed kind of sad but I needed the right vocalist. A couple of months ago I got in touch with macjammer ledebutant and she very kindly helped me to locate a suitable vocalist - macjammer guitapick's daughter Ava. She did several takes and I've chosen the one I liked the most. I think Ava did a wonderful job and now everyone else can hear this, and just in time for Father's Day, although I think the song can work anytime : ) I hope you enjoy it! Thanks again to ledebutant and Ava for all your efforts.
The picture is of my father-in-law Randy, one of the best "dads" I've ever met.

Lyrics:
I Owe it all to You Music & Lyrics by Daphne Kalfon c 2004right from the start, dad
you filled my life with love and laughter
you nurtured my soul
to be
healthy and whole
you fed my senses
you let me dream about tomorrow
you’d catch me when I’d fall
and taught me to stand tall
you were there to show the way
you’re the reason I am who I am today
and who I want to be
you were always there for me
the best dad there could ever be
I love you so
I owe it all to you, I owe it all to you
and when I’m grown, dad
and I have children of my own
I know that your care
and love
aren’t far away
and all of life’s lessons
will help me to make the right decisions
I know that you’ll approve
cuz I learned it all from you
you were there to show the way
you’re the reason I am who I am today
and who I want to be
you were always there for me
the best dad there could ever be
I love you so
I owe it all to you, I owe it all to you
I owe it all to you, I owe it all to you
you were there to show the way
everything I am today
you were there to show the way
I owe it all, I owe it all to you, I owe it all to you

This song brought a tear to my eyes.
Thank you for caring enough to publish this song on MJ's and allow everyone to have access to it.
The guitar backing was excellent and Ava did a very heartfelt rendition of the lyrics.
Brilliant.
Take care.
Paul.
and I'm glad you enjoyed it so much. Thank you for your comments. Guitar was me, but I don't play the guitar : ) It was what they call "key-tar". Cheers.

Well, part of it has to do with being dad to a wonderful daughter of my own a couple years older than Ava who loves to sing... part of it is the sweet lyrics (and though I refuse 100% credit, I can't see how you'd change the lyrics to say "I owe 80% to you and 20% was me working with the knowledge you gave me"... just doesn't have that smooth Daphna touch to it.) Nice choice of singer, nice solid song structure (well duh, it's Daphna!) and very pretty guitar backing... was that you playing? There was no credit for guitar, and that sounded like a real guitar. Thank you for posting this, what a great Father's day present!
ttfn,

you're welcome. No guitar, just me using a good guitar sound. Thanks for commenting : )

Way to go Ava! Very enjoyable singing.
When Daphna puts one up I guickly race over to MJ and eagerly take a listen cause I know it's going to be special. Of course this is another one of Daphna's treats. Great tribute for father's day!
glad you enjoyed : )

...beautiful song...
...for "Dad"...
...my so lovely daughter singing...
...hmmmm...something I really like about this tune...?
;-)
Thanks so much, Daphne (and Lisa for making the connection). And thank you, Ava. I owe a whole lot to you, too, darlin'....

And just in time for Father's Day!
How perfect is this? Ava's voice adds just the right poignancy to make an already beautiful song stunning.
Thank you Daphna and thank you Ava. Excellent performances from both of you.

almost too sweet, it has a modern yet broadway feel to it, nice
for your comment. I thought it was really interesting that you used the word "Broadway" to describe this song, because it isn't the first time people have used that word for my music. Now that I think of it, for this song too, you're right, it sounds like it'd be great on the stage. Maybe one of these days...

We could all wish to have and deserve a song like this... we could all wish to have our kids singing something like this, or thinking it in their head, or scribbling it into a letter...
Ava delivers a vocal that has neat elements of what I might imagine as daphna-as-a-young-girl...
Bob, I hope you're doing the appropriate dad-ly weeping somewhere along in here...
Very moving...

"Oooooh yesssss.......first practice "run through". Watching from over her shoulder. Had to quietly walk out of the room. She already thinks I'm corny enough as is...
Time keeps rolling along...
Daphne was so nice to ask Ava. And Lisa to make the connection. Didn't even charge an agent's fee. ;-)
What a wonderful place this is, people....

thanks for your comment - glad you enjoyed the sentiment so much : )

this is a neat combination of a young voice delivering lyrics that were written by someone who's had a chance to reflect on this special relationship. This was done simply, and that's great for those of us who enjoy reflecting on the words & the meaning behind them.
Nice singing, Ava! Nice key-tar Daphne!
glad you enjoyed : )
i really enjoy this site - and your song is one of the reasons why.

Good performance, but I'm not into sappy, sentimental songs about family. Of course I'm not big into family anyway, but that's just me. Good effort.
where you're coming from : )

Very sweet. Very vulnerable both in performance and writing! Thanks!

Reminds me why I always wanted a little girl. :)

I can comment. What a wonderful collaboration the two of you have put together. I'm a dad with a daughter who's a musician. Children are a real gift it's an honor and a blessing to be a parent. Great song, great playing, great singing. Thanks for this - I'll play it on Father's Day when I have my father-in-law comes over to visit. He raised two girls.
for your comments bud. So true, what you say about children - wish more people truly looked at it that way. I hope your father-in-law enjoys it on Father's Day. cheers.

Hi daphne - wonderful song, with a really open, sweet lyric. Ava's vocal is spot on - youthful and heartfelt. Agree with Tom - it has a very 'musical/broadway' feel to this. This song would have them weeping in the eyes - excellent work.
Steve
for listening in and for your comment echoroom - I appreciate it : )

What a sweet song sung by such a sweet voice. It totally took me by surprise. The simplicity of the single guitar and solo voice makes this a perfect gem in every way. I am so glad I heard it.
Paul
for your comment Paul. Yeah, I didn't think the song needed any kind of "big" production either. Glad you enjoyed it : )

lovely. really a wonderful track. Ava's voice is the perfect compliment
to this. Love everything about it.
just so i understand, that is or is not a real guitar? its sounds real, but i can't tell from the previous responses if you're inferring that its MIDI based or something.
Hi Karmatoburn - thanks for your comment. No, it was me playing a guitar sound on my keyboard. I'm pleasantly surprised to know that several people thought it was real guitar. It is a really good quality sound from within GarageBand but I do suppose that knowing something about the nuances of guitar playing helps too. I also write orchestral pieces which means I need to know how all those instruments work best both by themselves and with others, so my experience has helped a lot in that regard. Thanks again : )
