Daytime Ghost Stories (1)

|
Description:
“Nothin’ Doin’” w/JIGUMA
Ghost Story. Real Ghosts.
A Talking Blues.
The Bass walks us by the Graveyard
And the Strat bellows like a Saber tooth in a far Tar Pit.
The Present fends off a Predator of the Past.
Not all memories are equal, or that Friendly.
The only scary part is it’s Real.
More Rock than Blues, but not full-on Rock n Roll, either.
BUT, Neil "Drivin' Wheel" Porter DOES Rock the Track, here. The "Other Side" of the Balladeer is in The House, on this one.

Lyrics:
NOTHIN’ DOIN’
LA, San Antone, Santa Fe, too
Pavement’s Hot. Sky is Blue.
How is it they’re all the Same
When I know it ain’t True
Guess I’m Lost again,
Thinkin’ ‘bout You
Why ain’t it over Yet?
This Knife that cuts right through
Lost down in San Antone
Guess I’m still your Fool
Gone Before comes again
Took my seat Today
Stealing from my Heart the things
That I tried to Save
Stranger’s conversation
Makes it to my ears
The shuffling of feet
Now I’m Sure I hear
Ghosts that come in Daytime
To Steal you Life away
Reach out and grab onto something
It’s turning all to Yesterdays
Get me to the Fast Train
Get me to the Aeroplane
Get me to the Somewhere
Where I can Breathe again
London, Paris, New York City, Amsterdam
They’re all just another Stop
When you’re On the Lamb
Caught Believin’ in
The Things you laid to Ruin
From the start
Should have told you
Nothin’ Doin’
Yeah, from the Very Start
Should have told you
Nothin’ Doin’
I see the Best Way to do this
Would have been

Ah finally! &mdash 06/15/07 - 08:02:51 AM
Coop, I guess the stars have reached alignment and it was time to post. Still one of my favourites of yours. The mp3 seems to have worked in the transition to MJ real well - the Strat sounds amazing here, almost like the aif.
You have a real way with a talking blues my friend.

SAY, BROTHER &mdash 06/15/07 - 08:51:56 AM
NEIL, What are you doing Up at This Hour? Oh, Friday Night there, now.
After a quick Site test, I added a small, narrow boost at 424 Hz to clarify the Bass attack (diminished by Site compression) and it seems to help the Strat, too.
I love the "Big Pair of Boots" on that Bass, Brother. It Beats Up the Bullies like a Rocking, Solid Bass does. It puts the Rock in this Folk/Rock blues.
Best for the Weekend to You,

Your enthusiasm is contageous and anyone lucky enough to have a Crit from you receives that Gift.

WE Had the Benefit of your Last Crit in this Mix!
We were especially thinking about the separations, that you mentioned, as we set up the Tracks for this piece.
Worked Better. We Thank You for the Heads Up, Brother.
All Credit for the Mix goes to The "Drivin' Wheel", Neil Porter.

Nice build to the open boys - &mdash 06/15/07 - 02:11:07 PM
make em wait. Solid groove and damn near perfect mix - which is not an easy thing to do with the heat you got cookin here. Nice bass on the first break - steps up to the plate. Killer Fender licks in break two and happenin vocals throughout. Way to go gentleman - another fine collab. [ Reply to This ]
THE GOOD EARS &mdash 06/15/07 - 03:46:34 PM
WHAT a pleasure to have such a Close Read on the piece.
Nothing wasted, there.
The first build is, indeed, for the Bass to "lay down the Law" and the second for the Strat to lay out the plaint.
It is a Rush to have you lay it out move for move. It's like you were part of the band, Brother.
With many thanks for your comment and very best regards,

I would... &mdash 06/15/07 - 02:21:34 PM
...clap, hoot and holler to this one live (almost did it sitting here at my Mac)...
Back to the basics, no frills, straight-ahead blues-rock. I think you guys make a fabulous duo.
My only nit is that the end-fade should have been longer. Sounds this good should slowly disappear into the aural mist and not end so abruptly.
Be well!

NO FRILLS &mdash 06/15/07 - 03:58:27 PM
Nothin' Fancy. "Four yards and a Cloud of Dust." Straight Ahead.
The end-fade was Neil's way of suggesting that we leave out the other two verses so people wouldn't miss their train, fall asleep, etc.
No. Actually, I was the culprit, there; I don't think I gave Neil much more Track to work with. I hope we got your foot tapping before we pulled the plug, however.
Many thanks for the Spin, Brother. Very appreciated.
With best regards to You,

STILL in awe of the Pure Clarity and Poise of the currently Posted "Stay", I am surprised and pleased to have you look in on the High dB world of "Nothin".
Loosely "dedicated" to a misalignment with my first wife, it was "something else" all right. Completely.

classic cool &mdash 06/15/07 - 06:26:16 PM
mmmm, neil - that slippery slidey bass is sooo beautiful, and really sets up a super foundation for what follows. good job puttin it at just the right volume, too. it sometimes takes me a while to get used to the cutting edge to your vocal, coop - it's like the knife that cuts right through, doncha know -:) but once i surrender to it within the groove, the lyrics begin to reveal themselves. "you don't know how it ever begin" - most EXcellent sparkling lyrical nugget! who among us can not relate to that at some time in our lives? great job on the solo - changes were perfect, and i could easily have heard more guitar from you on the way out. i really enjoyed this one, boyz. it's loaded in my Logic Express, and the 3 of us are gonna have some fun tonite, whether you know it or not. splendid offering! anne the elder [ Reply to This ]

everything from classic Berry to bit bit of e-street. Excellent sound quality to boot. Great foundation.
Some stinging guitar lines. and a little double play and double stops was a delight to ears. [ Reply to This ]

Sweetness, nice, nice collab.
Been thinkin' of some tune right down this alley myself, maybe a little more to the StonZ side - but this....
This hits the nail on the head for me, Thanks.

Guys
Great Track. Very clean and clear. Neil you have become the master of Ozone. Are you creating your own presets or are you using standard Presets?

Ozone presets &mdash 06/16/07 - 09:58:34 PM
Cheers Ed, I have made my own basic preset (for the CD) which I then vary a little for each song. Coop's songs clearly require some different settings to my usual stuff, but I've found a set of parameters within which I'm comfortable with most songs. I first erred by going for loudness alone, but have now tried to reduce compression for a cleaner feel.
Coop's songs are instant classics - could have come from decades ago - and a lot of fun to play on.

strat &mdash 06/16/07 - 09:12:46 PM
The Start does sound great. But what hit me the most was the vocals.
See I fall in this age group. Id like someday to play bass or guitar for you guys..someday [ Reply to This ]
Well, Mr. Cooper... &mdash 06/16/07 - 09:14:23 PM
I have quietly tried several times, but just never warmed to your stuff in the past, for whatever reason...
This one, though, gets a lot of respect from me. I think you and Neil did a very good job on this. The bass and drums, for starters, are perfect...simple, but the accents really propel and adapt to the song...
I don't really enjoy most singing that sounds 'talked', but here you've got enough rhythm and melody in there that it solidly works. I hear McBoy's reference to Lou Reed, and the other obvious reference, I guess, is some 80's Dylan...but for me, it REALLY reminds me of 80's to 90's T-Bone Burnett...Which in my book is a compliment...
Finally, if that's you doing the electric guitar work, left and right, then my hat's off to you... As Vic notes, you've got some great, sollid, slashing double-stops going on, and it all sounds very DEFINITE, very aggressive, but swinging and self-assured. The sound you're getting is terrific. If you weren't identifying it as a Strat I'd be thinking it was a Telecaster. Very clean, but very rock & roll...
Everybody seems to be getting these great sheen-ful mixes with the Ozone, too... Very smooth and professional sounding without sounding flat or squashed...
I don't have a nit, except to say that I'd love to hear a mix without the megaphone-ish qualities of the vocal... where the vocal sounds like it's really in the same space or room as the guitar... I'd be interested to hear what that might sound like, as an alternative. I'm betting it'd be somewhere between T-Bone Burnett and The Wallflowers...
Well done.

Fenders united &mdash 06/17/07 - 02:14:59 AM
With a bit of luck you might hear Coop's Strat and my Tele in juxtaposition on our next collab. Coop writes songs "old style", with rhythm and crunch, and it's good to see you've made the step across to the dark side Ed ;)

Fantastic groove, and great &mdash 06/20/07 - 09:17:21 PM
song! Playing is outstanding throughout. The bass is sweet and rich, and the guitar is alive with melody and riffs. The lyrics are evocative and interesting - full of stories and resonant imagery. I guess I wouldn't mind hearing the vocal without the effect, but that is just a minor quibble. This is a rocking track. Nice work to you both. Great collab. Peace. [ Reply to This ]
