Lyrics:
Another DDT(the) birds and the bees
are hangin' in the trees
it's easy to dream
they will always be there
(the) bald eagle was thrown
(but) he didn't fade away
we've done it before
(we could) do it again
~~~~~
soaring on
like the eagle song
to observe a disturbing trend
moving on
(the) honeybees move on
they may never return again
~~~~~
protecting our home
from termites everyday
(but) who is keeping the score
who do we defend?
(there's a) change in the breeze
that just the eagle sees
it's easy to dream
and forget to care
~~~~~
soaring on
like the eagle song
to observe a disturbing trend
silent dawn
all the bees are gone
^ they may never be back again
~~~~~
(the) birds and the bees
are hangin' in the trees
it's easy to dream
they will always be there
(there's a) change in the breeze
that just the eagle sees
it's easy to dream
and forget to care
don't let there be another DDT
don't let there be another DDT DDT
don't let there be another DDT
don't let there be another - don't let there be another

do you ever sleep?
cool tune
you are always doing something different.
I love the chorus or is it the bridge, where it slows down to a crawl. Then, when the original riff kicks back in the thing just cooks. Nice use of change in rhythms.
Great playing at the end where the tune builds up and boils over. Great great job.
oh yea great lyric.

i don't know if it's the chorus or the bridge either! the song is patterned as A-B-A-B-A-C... i guess you meant B? that would be apropos.
thanks
There are so many levels of meaning that could be construed or mis-construed here. Help me out here! (in semi-real-time e-mail) Love the music!!! My mind (and heart) are buzzing (or) reeling from the thought provoking lyrics - or maybe, "itiswotitis" - just as simple as a rude awakening to the truth :-( Or, simply of what is happening in our world today - did you get the 411 on the dire circumstances of honey bees?, - due to cell phone towers and internet chaos!!!) Still, I know you, on a deeper level... nothing is ever simple - and great lyrics always have their "hooks" (or barbs ), so to speak. Beautiful song SmokeyVW - dibs! acknowledged.
I'm totally out of bug spray. (no joke)

oops, and thanks for commenting!

the chant at the end occurred to me while showering on a Saturday morning.
i was thinking about the suspected problem of vanishing honeybees.
somehow i was reminded of the bald eagle that was almost wiped out by DDT years ago.
the song also needed to be a cross of a classic rock rhythm that morphs into a more recent dance rhthym - to reinforce the old eagle and new honeybee relationship.
that was the initial spark for this song. six days later, the song was done.

This is a cool little tune vaguely like They Might be Giants (although actually, it just sounds like you). Love the tempo change, which slow everything down. Lyrically, I love this - we always write about humans, but what a great perspective - what we've done to other animals.
Really original, quirky track bill - fun, but kinda serious!
Steve
SmokeyVW
i like quirky - cause it leads to songs that are unlike any others.
something may or may not be actually happening to honeybees - just trying to spread the word!

Cool tune Smokey
Did you know that they are expanding DDT use in Africa? Its a strange world.
Thanks for sharing.
SmokeyVW
i had read that DDT is still in use today - it's a tradeoff between poisoning the food chain vs. fighting disease (i guess malaria) - a delicate balance...
thanks for listening
craft
well done and performed... I like it a lot
SmokeyVW
i had fun working on this project

Great idea.... like what you have come up with here.
Nice song with great message and feelings to it.... Excellent.
SmokeyVW
the chant was originally something like
"Can't you see? There's gonna be - another DDT - we gotta save the honeybee"
but the pattern was awkward...
it eventually evolved into a phrase that is less victim-oriented and more activist:
"Don't let there be another DDT".
the message in the song ended up being a lot stronger than my actual concern over honeybees - but maybe that's how activism gets rolling?
thanks
This is so impressive to me the way its sung and the changes in the rythm! You have such a strange sound in your voice. Gripping and enclosing almost stuck inside a box with a radio feel. VW meets ween!!
SmokeyVW
i usually wait a while before replying to comments - but this can't wait.
i couldn't find a quiet place in the house. the windows were open, fans roaring, the lawn sprinklers spraying, the plumbing was <whatever that sound is>, and the wasking machine and dryer were running. aghhhh!
so i recorded the vocals while sitting in my car with the windows up. it got damn hot in there by the end of the third take...
that is all

Great tune. The tempo changes are excellent. really added drama.
I see what Steve says about they might be giants. has that and a bit of devo at the end. But totally your sound.
Some kick ass keyboard work there my friend!
SmokeyVW
as usual, this is a hybrid of modified loops, real keyboard playing, and pencil tooling... as is the organ and sweeping synth keys here.
i wasn't really going for a particular style here - this is just how it turned out...
thanks for listening!

yeah were screwin the planet up big time ...........hugh......yeah we sux .....humans dont plat well with others ; (
SmokeyVW
it just keeps happening over and over...
i had lots of trouble with the lyrics. i had a fairly arcane rhyming scheme in mind and i think it was inhibiting me. i eventually threw away several verses that just weren't working. (Audubon was in there for a while.)
and thanks - you inspired me to try a rap tune "That's Progress" - it's not really rap tho - just my own take on it!!!
thanks for listening

I was fliping through my 80's seven inches this weekend and easily could have found this between Devo and Essential Logic. The sped up Yaz break is totally cool as is are the slow turns. Very Eno backing Vox through the ending. Ultimately though this is all Smoke and no mirrors.
SmokeyVW
do you mean like Yazoo's Situation? i had totally forgotten about that song, and their vocalist that sang in as low a register as possible...
i tried to sing this as low as i could - it was initially in E, but it was killing me, so i upped it to G.
thanks

Do not take this badly, kind of a Dr. Demento(Is that how it's spelled) song, which I enjoy. And don't worry about DDT.
LL
SmokeyVW
LOL - you mean like "When I Was A Dinosuar" or "Shaving Cream"?
i bet it's that line about termites that made you say that. i'm not taking this bady at all - LOL.
it's not DDT that concerns me here - it's some other unknown agent similar to DDT that i wonder about...
thanks!

this is really cool!! Works well in the Pop genre but its new, fresh, and interesting. Cool effect on the guitar (is that a phaser or a flanger?) Cool song!
SmokeyVW
glad you liked it
it's a phaser with a pretty high setting on the feedback...

how did this get here? it's supposed to be a reply to Tim!

I wasn't around here and missed all the buzz. So much to like and pay attention to. I don't want to wax philosophic, but we humans have come a long way from being at the risk of plagues to creating toxins and upsetting nature's checks and balances. We are the plague that caused many extinctions. You are one of a kind. Thanks.
