Description:
I'm kinda late for Father's Day, but this is a recording of MY dad probably about 40 years ago (1968-ish). He was a decent piano player, and although he didn't play publicly, he played every day at home after he got done at the shop. He was a TV/Radio repairman, and did sound systems for community events on the side. This is him just noodling around for a sound test with his new reel-to-reel recorder. My sister found it and had it transferred to CD. My dad died of cancer 30 years ago, but this brings back memories as if it was yesterday he was sitting at the piano playing.

Your Dad &mdash 06/18/07 - 07:06:00 AM
Your dad was a bit of an improviser :) He must have been fun to listen to. My dad didn't play any instruments, but he would listen to me bang away at the old upright we had. Thanks for sharing this tribute to your dad.

an improviser for sure - &mdash 06/18/07 - 08:14:45 AM
He'd often play children's songs for us, but then end them with a false cadence & walk away from the piano, so we'd have to beg him to sit down 'and finish the song right!' He was a real Floyd Cramer fan, and always added little flourishes & extra chord tones to everything he played. Thanks for listening!

Fond memories &mdash 06/18/07 - 08:56:14 AM
Thank you Kristy. This brings back fond memories of my own Dad playing "Fur Elise" and "Moonlight Sonata" on the piano. Sharing this recording is a wonderful way in which to honor your Dad.

God bless,

Rick

And it's fun to share the happiest memories with my firends here at MacJams. Thanks for listening.

Lovely memories &mdash 06/18/07 - 09:38:49 AM
What a treasured find, kristyjo! Your dad's playing is a real treat. He played with such evident joy in the instrument for its own sake, and with great competence.

I grew up listening to my dad playing the piano ... which I didn't appreciate much when I was a kid! I don't think he's ever bothered to make any recordings so I must make sure I do some next time he visits. A recording like this is something to cherish forever.

Yes - a cherished memory- &mdash 06/23/07 - 05:34:40 PM
I'm glad my sister found this. There are some recordings of other things he played and a couple of us kids singing some songs, too. It's amazing how quickly hearing this, in particular, brings me back to old times.

Thanks, Kristy... &mdash 06/18/07 - 11:12:07 AM
...although he wasn't a Horowitz or Hubie Blake, your dad could definitely play.

Wish I had some tapes of my dad from back then. You're very fortunate to have this.

Bob

Yup - &mdash 06/23/07 - 05:39:59 PM
I don't think I really appreciated the memories until I had kids, and they started growing up to be older than I was when this song was taped. So many people I know don't have much of a musical background, so that makes me appreciate my dad's musicality even more.

perfect! &mdash 06/18/07 - 11:53:39 AM
i can just see your dad coming home from a hard day of tv repair, putting down his toolcase, and cracking his knuckles on his way to the piano to signal an end to the Work Day and a beginning to At Home. his noodling is excellent!

i have an ancient tape of my dad playing Emil Dubec (?) in South Pacific from the 60s and singing Some Enchanted Evening in a ridiculous French accent, and with all its crackles and pops, i wouldn't trade it for anything.

what did he use his reel to reel for? thanks for sharing your musical heritage with us - that was special anne

We were lucky kids &mdash 06/23/07 - 06:05:34 PM
to have a dad who played piano for us, and even luckier to have a recording of it. It sounds like you, too, had a dad who just enjoyed making music. Thanks for listening!

I'm so pleased you shared such a personal recording as this. It's so nice to have a piece of history. Perhaps my son will listen to some of my recordings with fond memories some day...

Thank you for sharing

I, too, hope my own kids will listen to some of the recordings I've made, and have some good memories of this time in our lives.

How special that you were able to get a recording of your dad playing. :-) My mom could play the piano, but we don't have any recording of her except the ones in our memories. Thank you for sharing this personal treasure with us. :-)

I'm not surprised that you came from a music-loving family. As you pointed out, the 'recordings' in our memories are the most precious, and the most immediate. Still, it's really great to have found this recording, and great that my sister took the time to get it made for us all.

Wow! &mdash 06/21/07 - 09:11:45 AM
Wow! This is a great thing to have, and it shows your dad was indeed a very musical player, with a good sense of fun. Love the noodly chords at the end!

Thanks for listening &mdash 06/24/07 - 10:10:26 PM
The noodly chords were kind of his trademark. He definitely had his own style.

too cool &mdash 06/21/07 - 06:38:26 PM
It's obvious that you came by your gift honestly... I learned to play guitar off my fathers uke... I'd give anything to have a recording of those days... sigh

It's interesting- &mdash 06/25/07 - 07:26:15 PM
that a family's musical influence figures so strongly in so many of our lives. I'd love to hear you playing that uke!

Ah the memories! &mdash 06/23/07 - 12:39:32 AM
Your Dad sounds just like mine. He is now 87 and grew up as an orphan for a few years. Even if he never took formal piano lessons, he could play by ear and improvise, like his sister (she died), and brother who used to sing in Mass, even if he was not catholic! His favorite piece to this day is Poet and Peasant. He wanted to give me what he did not have and still remember playing this piece as a child. When I learned a piece well, he would sit down and listen and give me a dollar for a piece well played. I can only imagine what memories this recording evokes on you when you listen to it. Thank you for sharing!

I'm glad you had a chance to listen! &mdash 06/25/07 - 08:58:55 PM
My dad actually did have piano lessons. My grandmother told me that he never wanted to play what was written on the page - he just wanted to make things up, and it drove his piano teacher crazy! nevertheless, although he didn't make a profession out of music, playing the piano was an important part of his day. My son, who is 16, was given a chance to quit piano lessons when he went into High School, but he continues, and sits down to play the piano just for fun every day, too. (He doesn't however, always practice the current lesson material.) I hope he takes that with him into adulthood.

What a gift! &mdash 06/24/07 - 07:24:05 AM
Kristy, I'm sure you are very glad that you kept this recording. This is really priceless.

He was very talented! He could play it straight, or add his own ornaments at will. Very good ear, and very facile. That chromatic thing at the end seems to be a little clue to the world, that, "I can make this piano do what I want!"

This track brought a smile to my face. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for listening, John &mdash 06/27/07 - 09:47:50 PM
It is interesting that my dad enjoyed classical music very much, and played it a lot on the stereo, but was also such a big jazz and 'new country' fan. I think he kind of melded everything together when he played the piano.
PS I'll be looking for that new CD soon on iTunes & CDBaby.

I called here... &mdash 07/07/07 - 06:41:13 AM
because as yet we hadn't crossed paths until you kindly called on me, but I'm so pleased that I did to hear this piece. In your answers to the others you paint a very clear picture of your childhood with your Father and I can practically see you all sat on the floor or standing listening to him. A lovely 'natural' experience, Thank you, M

Isn't it great - &mdash 07/07/07 - 12:53:07 PM
that we can cross paths at all - me being on a whole other continent, and all. I'm glad you were able to listen. As much as I enjoyed posting something from my dad, however, I'll have to start writing and cleaning up some things of my own to post, too. I'm lacking discipline in my 'hobby life' and need to get some of that back. Thanks for the comments!

I don't think he really intended to make a recording for posterity, but all of us kids are glad it ended up that way. Thanks for your comments.

To think how much we complained about my dad's accordion playing in the house (that thing was loud!!!) but now I encourage him and record for him.

I'm glad we're saving memories for later.
