Description:
This is a drone piece based on the D chord. Apple loop drums and the rest is guitar, bass, midi keys, and air synth straight through or looped. I was inspired by My Bloody Valentine, but ended up sounding more like Sigur Ros.

Yesterday I posted a shorter version of this tune - and after listening to both on my iPod I've opted to replace it with the original unedited version. You're in for a 7+ minute listen. Thanks for taking the time.

Play loud.

Hardware:
iMac G5

Vic posted a similar comment re TNK &mdash 06/18/07 - 08:25:01 AM
to the first version that was up for a little while. My daughter heard a little Norwegian Wood towards the end.

Thanks for your patience with the length of this piece. I'm sure there's a decent "radio edit" I could do - but I'm a sucker for repetition. In the end this may be the beginning of a different song entirely.

Yeahhhhhhhhhh........... &mdash 06/18/07 - 08:22:29 AM
I missed the shorter version... but that's all for the good. This needs some real estate to ri-i-i-i-de for a while.

I started thinking about what it might be like getting stoned and watching TV golf while listening to this... really loud. There's the putt...... oh man, the ball is turning into a 747..... and it's flying over the sea with winged chocolate rabbits...... oh man....

This is going straight into my iTunes, Bud. I can listen to this anytime and still pass a DOT random drug test.

I think...

I love the TV golf reference - &mdash 06/18/07 - 08:31:59 AM
After I got wisdom teeth extracted many years ago - I was sent home with Percocet for pain. Being more of a psychedelic hippie I was new to this stuff so I took one and had a glass of wine that afternoon and turned on the TV. I watched the PGA and after a second glass of wine - or a second pill (maybe both) TV golf became my drug of choice. I swear they were whispering just for me as I floated over the rolling hills of green.

Now that I'm a clean living Dad - I sometimes watch golf just for the memories. BTW - anyone who watches golf on TV can handle a 7 minute instrumental.

Thanks for stopping by.

The sitar is from Ben Boldt. You can get it free at the resource page here. The Boldt packs are great - and the cello is the Fitch Cello - also free here.

i used to have huge poster just like your song pic. it sent me directly to the correct state of mind, i'll tell you.

i love the way this slowly evolves, yet always circles the center of the beginning, of the beginning, of the beginning, of the beginning, of the beginning, of the beginning, of the beginning, of the ...

[ Reply to This ]
In the beginning &mdash 06/19/07 - 06:54:37 AM
there was the D chord. What more do we need? Thanks for stopping by.

BTW - is the mix i.e. levels of distortion acceptable? I couldn't seem to get a cleaner version of this out of BG.

distortion &mdash 06/19/07 - 05:28:22 PM
well, yeah, there is distortion in there - but it's the good kind!

i suppose a purist might prefer to hear tube clipping or tape limiting, but i like it OK. there's probably some way to emulate that, even simply by dropping the highend just a tad - but the crispness would go away...

i think it's part of what give this its drive...

extended treat &mdash 06/18/07 - 08:30:28 PM
jam on and drone it. the backing synth, ep guitar is tres physchedelic, and i wish i know how to spell that word as well. nice slow evolving transitions. light the candles, and incense. great job

Thanks for your comments &mdash 06/19/07 - 06:58:27 AM
the chiming guitar is played with a Jellyfish pick. Thanks go to Vic for the turn-on. Anyone looking for a real treat should pick up an Air FX. That's the low swooping drone and the squiggles - the only sunth on this tune.

Bud,
I have been gazing at my shoes for 7 minutes and have never been so happy. Sonic Youth drony, without the earsplitting squeels. Yeah, or, I agree, Stone Roses more like it. Maybe a tab bit of Brian Jonestown Massacre when you get into the tabla bit. Really cool, you are always pushing the envelope and coming up with stuff I admire. Oh, and yeah, I played it LOUD, thanks for that suggestion...;-)

[ Reply to This ]
I like the shoe gazing reference &mdash 06/20/07 - 02:32:36 PM
The Jesus and Mary Chain were high on the influence list for this one too. I can only dream about getting my production chops up to your level - the WAR collab sounded awesome. I just read the 33 1/3 book on Loveless by MBV and now I'm reading the one about Paul's Boutique from the Beasties. These books are a hoot.

Nice &mdash 06/22/07 - 09:54:46 AM
This as listenable as it is ignorable (a compliment, believe me). I didn't play it loud because it's just too damn early in the morning, but as it played I was puttering around doing random everyday stuff; and I would find myself drifting away to the land of aural hum, and then suddenly snapping back to the music. Lots of power in the details; the whole picture very gentle and positive. I think this should be twice as long.

[ Reply to This ]
Thanks for your comments &mdash 06/22/07 - 12:42:47 PM
I completely get what you're saying about ignorable - I consider it high praise. In the My Bloody Valentine book I recently read Kevin Shields talked about striving to have his music work differently on different systems and at different volumes. I was thinking about that when I did this which is why I left it long as an ambient piece. I also think it hangs loud - but in a different way.

Good luck at DTW - I'm afraid I can't make it.

Hot damn... sweet tune! &mdash 06/23/07 - 11:03:29 PM
Giving a lot of depth to a simple idea... you have made much more out of less here. My Bloody Valentine is one of my favoritist bands... and this falls under "influenced by" rather than "copying", I would say... which is good! ALso reminded me a little of Cornershop's drone pop gem 6 a.m. Julliander Shere (I probably mispelled that). Bye!
