Description:
Not everyone listens. I listen.
A tune about don't sweat the small stuff and treat the big stuff as small stuff.

Lyrics:
Torn

so i saw it in your eyes
a face that's losing it's grip
and you start to wonder when your heart rolls like thunder
what you thought was yours. gone

ch:
and when you're sorry and sad
i really sympathize
thats when you realize that you are torn

pride comes before a fall
confused on who to call
now you're feeling down 'cause there's no one around
the darkness settles in. goodnight

ch:
and when you're sorry and sad
i really sympathize
thats when you realize that you are torn

with the pressure you're under
don't you stop and wonder
you say where do i go from here? I'm on the other side of the mirror

ch:
and when you're sorry and sad
i really sympathize
thats when you realize that you are torn
i really sympathize

burn away all the misery
wash away all the flames
get back on your feet and walk away through the charred remains

ch:
and when you're sorry and sad
i really sympathize
thats when you realize that you are torn

Vic - at first I thought - &mdash 06/19/07 - 08:38:54 PM
"this a lighter tune for Vic". Thern it got deeper and deeper and richer and richer - but not heavier and heavier - which is really artful on your part. You have the best head for verse/chorus/bridge around here. Always interesting changes and always moving the story along. BTW - your vocals on this are really cool - nice an relaxed. Good lyrics too.

PS - I managed to get here first for a change.

Thanks Bud &mdash 06/19/07 - 11:08:31 PM
you probably know i never keep a song light all the way through. I changed out some instruments and the playing on different verses and choruses so there would be a slow build up.

Thanks Bud this is the other faux four tune :-)

Channeling the Dark Horse &mdash 06/19/07 - 08:43:17 PM
I mean, seriously, do you somehow become possessed by the spirits of dead (and sometimes living) rock stars? It's kind of scary. :)

This is a seriously cool sound, especially the final third of the piece, from the solo section on, it just goes crazy. Excellent lyrics, as usual. I'm just enjoying this one over and over, Vic.

when i get into recording I do feel like something is pulling me through it. I jump from instruments and tracks and leave a big mess in the room. Any guiding spirit leaves immediately when there's the clean up to do.

Thanks Joseph!

Bloody marvellous! &mdash 06/19/07 - 09:10:58 PM
You sure picked up some stuff from that Beatles songbook Vic, although I hear Blur and Ray Davies.
Lovely guitar harmony work. and excellent vocals. Fantastic structure and chordal stuff happening. So simple but simultaneously, so complex - excellent tune and lyrically strong.

The songbook &mdash 06/19/07 - 11:42:44 PM
easy play of course is what i used to learned to play guitar all those years ago. The chords are the basics. Adding on the harmony and counter stuff is always fun to see how it comes out. A little complex if it was all tabbed. But the challenge is what makes all the more fun!

As always, it's great to &mdash 06/19/07 - 09:58:16 PM
hear your voice. Another great vocal performance. Reminds of later Dylan. The guitar work here is also great - subtle, sweet playing that allows the vocal to lead, but flavors the whole song. I like the sentiment of the song, and there are some great lyrics - "burn away all the misery, wash away all the flames, get back on your feet and walk away through the charred remains" is an outstanding lyric. Powerful imagery that just pulls you in. Also love the backing vocals. If I had any nit to pick, it would be that the song seems to start too suddenly as if part of the opening bar had been cut off? But that's a minor quibble. This is a nice song, and, as ever, very well executed. Nice work. Peace.

Thanks David &mdash 06/19/07 - 11:50:35 PM
This took me a bit to get the vocals halfway decent.

I was thinking the same on the intro after I had this done. a short drum intro would of been nice. but shifting all the pans and levels with tracks was going to take quite a while. Some rainy weekend I'll take the time to adjust for that

Thanks again David. great new song of yours, BTW.

I like this one, Vic. The mix sounds fantastic! The only thing I noticed was that the song seems to be clipped at the intro. Maybe it's just me :)

[ Reply to This ]
Thanks Mike &mdash 06/20/07 - 12:01:04 AM
This is one of my fav's for a mix as well. Clipping. more than likely the semi-hallow body electric through the tube screamer can have a hard sound. could bring it down a tad to soften the attack. I notice on a some of others songs, they start off with a clipping sound on loading up. Who knows.

Thanks again Mike, have you been practicing the piano?

the kinks &mdash 06/19/07 - 10:46:50 PM
thats who comes to mind, but in a modern way, you have a very good production and musical structure that sounds very professional and ur art werk is always amusing.....your lyrics are always controversial in a thinking way.......there should be a challenge ex: LIOLI, were music is put to lyrics using loops or instruments and you would be the first to write lyrics, you do write lyrics good or maybe just write a song and I'll sing....BlueSky

I like your idea of the contest idea. I always write the lyrics last and that's the hardest part for me. The music part a whole lot easier. I do show my roots, very true.

Thanks again for sharing your time!

Busy boy, busy boy... &mdash 06/19/07 - 11:11:45 PM
As per jgurner... you are channeling big time echoes of rock songs past... nothing specific (although... insert Beatle reference), just that... I've got a feeling, that... this song so captures a sound that I love and harkens back to, what in my way of thinking, was the golden age of rock music. Take a bow, dear boy. And do continue to let it be and don't let me down... because... although you are not the walrus... nor the fool on the hill... your music makes me feel fine... OK, it's not a revolution... just that your music reminds me of yesterday... can someone give me some Help here??

cheers

funny comment. I knew it would have to come up. I did go with flow turned off my mind and floated downstream. the decending part was a nod to the walrus and the ending another nod to the end of a day in the life. just enough so some might get it.

Thanks Jack looking forward to Last Sail

First of all: Your best mix ever. Second: Your best Chorus ever. This grabbed me by the jewels and didn't let go till the last note faded away. I'll be walking funny for a week...(I gotta start wearin a cup!).

Good insightful lyrics. Great vocal delivery (again, especially in the chorus!). Guitar work over the top as per usual. I too, thought the beginning a tad "clipped." It's the only nit. And barely one at that...

Be well bro!

What &mdash 06/21/07 - 01:36:14 PM
an excellent production - Your voice sounds incredibly close on the verses - it really makes you sit up and listen. I always like the way you position the instruments in your mixes - and this could be your best yet - the acoustics sound fab. The only nit (which has been mentioned is the abrupt start - justs sounds like there's a tiny bit missing).

Great build up. Very nicely done.

Peter

Thanks Peter &mdash 06/21/07 - 09:20:15 PM
I recently discovered the energizer plug-in and added that to the vocals.

The acoustics i used a jellyfish pick (has a row of tines) giving it a bit of a twelve string effect, it's not very good on picking, not enough attack to it.

I agree about the start. I believe I got to use to it. Isn't that the way it always is.

Thanks again Peter!

Another holman tune, another Holman classic. Intro has the power of 'All the Young dudes'. A feckin' great sleazy vocal on this Vic, really screamin great rough 'n' ready vocals. The production on this is stonkin', but overall I just love the feel and the tricky little changes.

Every one you bring out is better than the last ... another belter. the solo/break is a drug-fuelled epic in its own right.

I think I can do better at them. Plus a few other suggestions could help this be a tad better. You know how it goes, when do I stop fitzing?

Now, where did I put that lighter?... :-) &mdash 06/22/07 - 07:34:25 PM
Torch Song perhaps?! (I hope it becomes your own personal bonfire!!! :-)) I detect a change from "minor" to "major" (I'm Lovin' this!!!)
Love the "hooks" in your lyrics! You write them last? Wow!!!
My favorites are, "a face that's lost it's grip" , "the darkness settles in. goodnight." , "you say, where do I go from here? I'm on the other side of the mirror. (really paints a masterpiece in my mind!), "burn away all the misery - wash away all the flames (the slight oxymoron/ reversal is very provocative!!!), and "get back on your feet again (a cliche - until you add!!!) "and walk away through the charred remains." (I am blown away!!!! [You're Doin' It Again!! ref. recent note I sent you.])
Beatles, Kinks, Bowie, Petty - it's all Vic :-)!!! My favorite Petty song is "Learning To Fly" (but I already got the wings!!!)
Your voice is getting stronger - more confident! Very sexy!!! Isn't it phenomenal what the "Birds&the Bees" can conjure up in the human psyche?!!! This song makes me wanna move on down the alphabet a notch, and change my address to a less clement climate!!! :-) Well, you said..... :-)

I tend to be a good listener. At least that's what everyone told me. I never have real solutions, who ever does,.

I write the lyrics last, these kept getting rewrittten even as i tried to put the vocals down. For some reason I kept thinking of "Hey Jude" lyrically about the real message of that song. So I tend to think I had put another spin on it.

It's always best to stay optimistic, no matter what. At least in my opinion. It's alot like I wrote in the song info.

Thanks again Carole.

Better qualify this, although, song writer's should recognize a metaphor when they see one. :-) By virgin, I meant those times throughout life when...a quote..."We don't see things as they are; we see them as we are." - Anais Nin, then comes the metaphorical 2X4, and innocence lost, which with introspection over time becomes grist for the mill of creation. "We write [lyrics] to taste life twice; in the moment, and in retrospection." - Anais Nin
Happiness is a choice! :-)
