Description:
Feel free to ask "why!", "seriously?!" or "was that truly necessary?" but I couldn't resist. Don't think I even tried.

Let me also take this opportunity to apologize for my complete absence on MJ - no comments, no time etc. I'm sure I've missed tons of good music.

Regarding this post - back then (say 5 years ago) I was young and didn't know any better, but I've learnt to keep my midi keyboard out of reach when I'm watching movies. You're welcome.

I realised that I'd rather not have this song rated. Even I listen to it with a mischievous grin on my face and what to do with a trigger happy finger and a "No redeeming quality" option on the ratings:)

Well... &mdash 06/20/07 - 04:06:31 PM
Personally, I thought that it was quite tastey! And I kept listening for what might be wrong. Maybe I'm what's wrong, but this is something that I've already adjusted to.

I really liked it! It made me feel like I'm cooler than I know how to be. That makes this really good. So don't go touchn' it up too much, if at all. Thanks for messn' things up the way you do. Macca

Holy Moley &mdash 06/20/07 - 05:56:34 PM
I don't need to ask 'why'... this is super cool! Man, that groove has giant boots, enough to get the whole town rocking. I don't care if it sounds like some soundtrack to something or other, I really diggit!

I did this little piece after I saw good old Ocean's 11 - the instrumentation is similar to one of the songs there. That's pretty much it, really. Thanks, David!

cool &mdash 06/20/07 - 06:32:53 PM
Very tasteful mix and choice of sounds. Nice organ effects.

It seems like it's missing a solo, melody line; is a (good) accompaniment though. This needs some sort of live sax or flute floating on top.

I especially like the soundscape at the very end, with a few more elements thrown in for "spice". Perhaps develop this even more, earlier in the piece.

Nice surprise! &mdash 06/21/07 - 08:25:55 AM
Wow, even you dignified this little piece with a comment! Thanks for that! The whole track is kind of a soundtrack with little effort to make that a standalone piece. Of course I agree with you. The flute is actually an excellent idea...I'll soon post something a little bit more carefully crafted:) Great to know you stopped by!

cool vibe &mdash 06/21/07 - 12:06:20 AM
I also dig the artwerk, your a classy man what ever style you do. I would like to hear Shirley Bassey singing and some tripped out sax / trumpet player, theres a street muscian who playe @ the 14th st subway under pass and @ columbus circle entrance, he would sound perfect with this song...just a tought

cool vibe &mdash 06/21/07 - 08:33:11 AM
I'm sure any good musician, singer, soloist playing an actual instrument would make this a better piece. Actually, I bet you anything It would sound even better with just them, minus the background music:) Oh, but then they'd get sued for the artwork...Thanks a lot for listening!

An enjoyable tune... &mdash 06/21/07 - 12:19:23 AM
I really enjoyed listening to this piece of music.

I can tell you put a whole lot of time into the making of the mix.

It wasn't the 'usual' Jazz Fusion but a meld of Jazz and other localised/stylised sounds.

The Rhodes-type sound came through the best for me.

Excellent.

As Fagin once said 'You can go but be back soon'.

Paul.

That's a... &mdash 06/21/07 - 08:39:07 AM
really nice comment. Appreciate it. To be honest, I didn't even know much about mixing when I did this song, not that I know much more know! I just relied on the sounds in GB and added layer after layer. Kind of spontanous without tedious balancing and eq'ing ruining all the fun (lol). Happy you enjoyed it though.

Great groove! &mdash 06/21/07 - 04:34:25 AM
This is a great, funky groove! I really like it. I don't know if you ever heard Deodato's "Zarathustra" (aka Also Sprach Zarathustra, the beginning of which was made hugely famous (the Richard Strauss version) in the movie "2001, A Space Odyssey," but this groove is remarkably similar to that one, even the key and tempo... I guess my thought would be that if this concerns you (and it's fine if it doesn't), you could try Cameron's suggestion and add a prominent solo line, as long as it's different from the "2001%u2026" theme? Just a suggestion.

Main thing is, you got a great groove here!

2001 &mdash 06/21/07 - 08:44:47 AM
Can you believe that I never actually saw that movie! Your comment made me even more curious to see it. Thanks for the ideas too. This post might not last long on my page, the kind of a fun thing that looses color once exposed to the sun, but I'm always learning a lot from comments like yours. Thanks so much for taking your time!

Deodato &mdash 07/01/07 - 05:21:47 AM
Just stopped by for another listen... still lovin' it.

I wanted to clarify that, while 2001... is well worth seeing, the tune I was referring to was a version of the famous music associated with that movie by Deodato; it wasn't actually used in the movie. Deodato's version was a pretty big hit about 35 years ago, though, and if you get a chance you absolutely MUST listen to it... or even to the first 30 seconds at iTunes or some such place. It's well worth hearing on its own merits, but you may be able to hear the similarity I mentioned as well.

Cheers!

Thanks a lot Clark, just downloaded it and it's as good as you say it is. It's so refreshing to hear the difference between actual music and my quick GB replicas! But thanks for the tip - enjoyed it tremendously. Nothing beats live music in terms of energy and impact. Your latest piano post is yet another proof!

Yeah, rumor has it you need a guitar for a blistering guitar solo...I'm just a poor chap with a 49-key midi piano. Thanks for stopping by!

Why not? &mdash 06/21/07 - 07:19:54 AM
Excellent production. I dig the bass sound, the biting organ, the air you leave between the phrases. Just for fun is still fun. I loved it. Thanks for sharing again.

After listening to some of your amazing keyboard solos I'd have expected some well-deserved critisism for this light-hearted improv, but I'll accept encouragement any time of the day. Thanks so much for taking your time, Tobin!

quit being so modest &mdash 06/21/07 - 09:31:11 AM
So, like, what are you BAD at?! What I really like in this is the separation of instruments that comprise the whole. You know exactly when this could become monotonous and you change it up for us. That's where you excel... Your sense of drama. It's a keen perception of knowing when the plot thickens, so-to-speak. Thanks, Parichayaka, for continuing to inspire me and make me jealous. :-) I'd love to work on a piece with you someday.

I'm really bad at math, amongst countless other things. Interestingly enough I was going to take your advice about being much less modest (honest) but after reading this generous and insightful comment I was humbled again. So...there you go, great! Still, thanks very much for you kind encouragement!

I really liked this, P.

Yep &mdash 06/21/07 - 12:02:48 PM
Couldn't agree more. Some real guitar playing would add a lot of energy to this. I believe you'd actually need less layers and instruments if they were live instruments. Now, when are YOU going to post some more of your beautiful guitar music? It's been a while and there are hordes of fans waiting...

How can you NOT love this? &mdash 06/21/07 - 12:26:02 PM
This is so funky, I love the keys, both organs and the Rhodes. The bass is cool like a cat, I feel the summer in this one! Artwork is also very good!

this is a really fun. Something about makes you want to keep on listening, like you know somethings coming up next. Realy well done and awesome instrumentation. i always like this stuff.

it also reminded me of the american beauty score. maybe you could incorperate some of those rythms of course its a completely different style. anyways this is really cool.

Yeah, I thought I heard some "American Beauty" in your latest post. Check out Road to Perdition - also by Newman. Somewhat overlooked soundtrack but has some outstanding themes and arrangements.

This really has a cool snap, tap, rap feel. Love the happy jazz, uplifting sounds.

Quite a groove there Parichayaka !

This one of the coolest jazzy rhythm tunes i've heard here at mj. Of course it gets a bit of national flavor when I detected some eastern sounds and percussion later on. Ahh nice ending too!

Way to go!!!

I think this a great little funky tune. Can't believe that's the GB Rhodes and Hammond. You great a great tone out of both. Impeccable timing and space between sounds. I too am jealous...and yes, there's great redeeming quality!

GB &mdash 06/26/07 - 06:49:04 PM
That's the nice thing about GB. You don't have to think about anything - you can just play, and although it'll be hard to get pro quality out of the program, it's easy to make something sound quite good and have a good time in the process:) Oh, and no reason to be jealous, I'd pay money to take music lessons from you!!

Extremely cool! &mdash 06/26/07 - 06:39:22 PM
First, let me say that I love everything about this track - the bass works perfectly and the keys are awesome. The production is superb and the movement is in a perfect groove. If I was going to change anything, I'd probably suggest a live drummer for a bit more variation, but this is a very minor nit indeed.
Yes, it could take a sax or even some Mcboy guitar, but it stands very well on it's own.
Did I mention that I love the keys - I'd love to be able to do that!
A very deep bow from me!
Neil
