Song Description

This is a "laid back rap" version of my earlier song Progress.

Lyrics:
That's Progress

i wouldn't know but i wouldn't doubt
they're makin' a bomb that makes you really devout

as you are
you don't know you can't wish on the evening star

although the answer isn't clear
i say do not fear

(at all costs we're gonna win this war)

as you are
you don't know you can't wish on the evening star

(at all costs we're gonna win this war)

well i say do not fear
they've always said the end is near

i think i'll have another beer

as for the future we can only guess
that's progress

although the answer isn't clear
i say do not fear

they're makin' these trucks
with a laser beam that can burn you down from a mile away

(at all costs we're gonna win this war)

i think i'll have another beer

man you've got a very laid back style - I can see the ladies linin' up now. I think DJ French Toast has worked a little mojo on you. Seriously now - this is a very cool song with a flowing groove and a wry message. Nice touch with the trumpet line. Fine sequel to progress,

this is far away from true rap. i'd need to do a lot of serious work to pull off a real tune. it's an area that i might explore.

LOL - ladies linin' up! in my dreams...

thanks

You've made rap listenable to my ears. Like the laid back jazz undertone to it. the descreet effect on the vocals keeps it intersting without been preachy like rap usually dictates. The addition of the solo horn...slick!

it was somehow effortless putting together the words on this - it's mixture of ideas off the forums - stuff in the papers - and this growing sense of the futility of it all...

very different for you. i really like the feel of this, very cool acid jazz vibe.

hey barkeep! i'll have one of those: what she's having...

you know they make these little chocolate covered lumps of vanilla ice cream marketed as "Dibs" - they're actually quite good.

thanks

Disarmingly chilling &mdash 06/23/07 - 05:12:56 PM
This is very clever and creative. You express some attitudes we hear n these times- "Eat, drink, and be merry, for tomorrow we die." Party on, nothin we can do, anyway. "Do not fear," (like the angels say). "We gotta win, no matter if we all die." The abrupt ending makes me think that poor guy didn't even get to finish his beer.

it's wonderful and scary times that we live in

that abrupt ending was inspired by your collab "The Last Great War" http://www.macjams.com/song/32686

yeah, and that laser beam burned down our narrator...

thanks

Excellent! &mdash 06/23/07 - 06:49:54 PM
This is a really cool version Bill. The bass sounds punchy and the percussion crisp. The eiree strings remind me of the end of the Beatles' "Glass Onion." I've always dug that sound. Reading is real good. The horn is a freakin' trip. My only nit is the ending. I'm sure you ended so abruptly for dramatic effect, but I (greedy b a s t a r d that I am) wanted more...

Rock on bro Bill!

sorry about that ending - it was meant to be a "is that all there is?" sort of thing. (remember the song by that name?)

thanks

Hey Bill &mdash 06/23/07 - 11:47:17 PM
Hip bass line. This tune lives up to all the comments that came before mine.
Ditto what they said.
I don't think that anyone talked about
the vocal chorus oooooh's.
Those are the coolest sounding airy female voices.
How did you get the trumpet to slide thru the scale like that. Miles-ish.
keep em coming.

i'm in love with the vocal synth that came with the World Music jampack. can't get enough of it! it's the same one i used in the original "Progress".

the trumpet is a few real audio loops from the Remix Tools jampack.

thanks Tim

Memo to self:

Don't audition SmokeyVW tracks just before bed.

That little bit of trumpet really lifts the track, somehow...

Oughta get this one over to NPR... And I mean that as a compliment...

not all my songs are scary! maybe we need another choice next to the "Explicit" checkbox: something like "Disturbing to Ed" B^)

i never thought about minimalism as an aspect of understatement. don't know why i just thought of this.

anyway...

thanks Ed!
