Description:
In June of 2001, along with Randy Hoefling (former owner), I set sail on my sloop for the last time to deliver the boat to its new owner in New York. The cruise started in West Palm Beach, FL. The second night out we hit a storm about 75 miles off the coast of Georgia. It started about 2:00 AM and lasted for several hours. My watch was just ending. Randy was taking over at the tiller as winds reached 40-50 knots and the waves peaked in the 20 to 25 foot range (as best we could tell). The wind, coming out of the north, caused the waves to stack up as we were in the Gulf Stream which flows south to north. Not fun... I found myself wondering at one moment "is this how it's suppose to end." Well, Randy was the master sailor on board and we're both alive today because of his skill, a very worthy ocean-going vessel, and the mercy of God.

Uncle F. Goodwilly (Amagi)
Gumption Goodwilly (Vic Holman)
Grandpa Curmudgeon Goodwilly (Dadai)
Mojo Goodwilly (Mike Dancy)

Sitting in on this song:
Woodgill Harmonette Goodwilly (rschletty) Quarter-sibling to Cur, Woodgill made his fortune selling old Havana cigar boxes repurposed as throat lozenge organizers. They came in many colors (both lozenges and boxes). Now all he wants to do is sing the Blues, Rockabilly style, with a spray of West Coast Surf.

And our stow away... Cousin Brucey (jiguma) from down under. Once the voyage started and we were well under sail, we found him hiding out under the main V-berth. We were about to throw him over board, as it is considered bad luck on a boat to have an Aussie stow away. But decided to spare him once we realized he had brought his bass guitar.

Mike Wark-organ, vocals
MikeDancy-drums
Vic Holman-electric guitar, vocals
Neil Porter-bass
Jack Miller-lead vocal & acoustic guitar
Rich Schletty-vocals & vocal harmonies

Thanks guys for some incredible performances!

Photo (taken by Randy) is the Tir na nOg after reaching safe harbor, a day and a half after the storm, at Cape Fear, NC.

Lyrics:
Last Sail
© Copyright 2007 Jack Miller

Southern sunset, darkness was falling
And the waves laid gently down
Crew and boat were ready for that cruise
For the, the wind, and God's will. 2x

The tide was ebbing as we wet wail
Our heading would be true
Gliding on the sea once again
Into the breeze, into the blue. 2x

At the helm, two bells past midnight
On my watch that demon rose
Hell and wind and salt and foam
Beat the sloop Tir na nOg. 2x

Chorus: Never felt so hopeless that night
Battling storm, exhaustion, and fright
Never so thankful to have my life
And to be sailing calm seas once again. (repeat line on last chorus)

Mountains of ocean, steady as she goes
We held that tiller tight
Fixed on the compass to the north
Into the storm, into the night. 2x

Twenty-five feet, well the seas they crashed
And the wind galed fifty more
Hard and fast we cut through that blow
But would it cease? Was this the final score? 2x

Chorus

Instrumental

Well the angry seas, they subsided
As the dark gave way to dawn
Too tired to sleep that misty morn
And my mate at the tiller sailed on. 2x

Chorus.... (repeat last line)

you guys sound great! i love the big boy wall of sound and all the manly harmony - sort of a Crosby, Stills, Nash and Old sound. ;) wonderful guitar solo, and the transition out of it into the next verse was slick. i'll be crackin up over the credits for some time... anne

Sisters said it: "Crosby, Stills, Nash and Old sound". Now you are crackin' us up. Thanks for your comments. It was truly fun joining the crew for this high tide ride.

I demoed this song in folk-acoustic fashion for an Open Song Circle last week (at Natural Sound Studio in St. Paul, MN). They said it warn't bad.

The vocals did come out good. One of my better vocal outings. But Rich brought in those tight harmonies and vox blends that really take the singing to somewhere cool.

And I actually think the song shines in every instrument. Just a whole bunch of great performances.

Thank you for telling us the story behind this song. It makes it even more interesting to listen to. And such personal bio info, too. I love how w your voices blend- great mixing! You guys sure know how to play! It's cool to be able to pick out each of your signature sounds. I'm glad your sloop's last voage was so memorable, because we got to hear a great collab from that experience. :-)

Biggest challenge... &mdash 06/25/07 - 12:56:12 PM
... in a collab besides just mixing the song to sound decent is doing it in a way to let every member of the band be heard. I especially wanted to do that on this tune with all the fine contributions.

There are myriads of stories like this among those who do a lot a sailing. They always sound more romantic than they were. It is a great story, but I wouldn't want to relive it.

thanks...

Lots of fun guys and thanks for asking me to join in Jack. I know just how difficult these mega collabs are to pull off, and frankly would never have had the patience that Jack showed on this one - tweaking this and twiddling that. As EB said, "this is what Mj's is all about". Good mix Jack!

great collaboration. Nice to have the story behind the song - makes you interested before you've heard a note. There's some excellent electric guitar and keyboard work (nicely placed in the mix) - love that soaring guitar solo. The midi drums are really good. Like the lead vocals - nice harmony background vocals too.

Great song and excellent performances from you all. Thanks for all your hard work.

I've been away.... &mdash 06/25/07 - 10:57:23 AM
... since posting this song on Sunday morning. I want thank again all the Goodwillys on this song. Vic... your guitar work, especially that ripping, storming solo break (what a performance) really lifted this song. Mike W. your keyboards anchor the song throughout, often in counterpoint to Vic's guitar... amazing stuff. Rich... CSN&Y was a sound to shoot for... da sisters say it is so! Mike D. Drums are as real as anything. You put together an incredible performance that is seamless with everything. Cousin Brucey... thanks for lending a hand... on your bass. Without it the song wouldn't have floated nearly as well.

The power of MJ collaborations is so evident in this song. I have been wanting to record a song about my last sail for quite a while. I had no idea I would get this kind of help. Special thanks to Amagi for his great idea of the Goodwillys Band.

Did you see it up above? Software used? GarageBand 1. Jack should have added "and an old G3". You all ought to know what an accomplishment it was for Jack to mix this in GB1. So many sounds competing for attention. The results are very fine. Jack deftly put all the parts into their proper place in the soundscape. Incredible, really.

seafare &mdash 06/28/07 - 11:01:02 AM
Songs about the perils of seafaring have been handed down since Ulysses returned from Troy. There are shipwrecked tales about the Titanic and the Ruben James, and, in more recent times, songs like Dylan's "Talkin' Bear Mountain Blues" and Lightfoot's "Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald," but they're tales about something happening to somebody else. I may be all washed up on this, but this seems to be special in that it is a first-person account of what it's like to go through a storm at sea.

There probably are other "eyewitness" accounts of sea-survival around in song. (You mention that hundreds of these stories are floating around the ports.) Still, this may be the first time one has been recorded by the sailor who went through the event - backed by a crew assembled globally via the internet.

I like the structural decision to repeat the last line of each verse, which heightens the lyrical impact. (Oddly, this reminds me of another tale of seafaring woe, in a song about a group of castaways that repeats the line "a three-hour tour.")

Others have pointed out the fine performances of your band mates, as well as commending the GB1 production. I'd like to add that you've done a fine job of singing here, Jack. And there are a couple of delicious vocal touches in the backing, like when Richard drops out to let you solo on the third and fourth lines of each verse - only to come back in on the repeat ... and again when he delays on the delivery of "fifty more" in Verse Six.

I am almost thinking of Gilligans Island, but this has of course a more jazzier hip sound. Your vocal really seems to fit in quite nicely here.

Like the backround oh's and ah's as well.

You really paint a nice picture with the lyrics. Kind of like Ghost Riders on water :)

I like that Bill... very cool. Glad you like the tune and I can see the Gilligan reference on the repeat on the end of each verse. Yeah, there is a lot going on in this song. And it is tough (for me), to some degree, to mix something like this so everyone can be heard appropriately in the song. Kinda cool that you have been listening to it several times to figure out who's who and what's what...

This started out as an acoustic rock song. But as the various collaboration parts start coming in it obviously had to change. The vocal harmonies were always in the plan, but the sound grew, especially with the organ and guitar parts.

Thanks for the recognition. Much appreciated.
