All the Pretty Little Horses (1)
|
|
Description:
This is an old slave song from the U.S.
It describes how many weren't allowed to attend their own children before others'.
I think about the major attitudes of the world dealing with wars and prejudices. I would like to consider family love as a foundation for community.
My daughter and spouse helped sing this one. My daughter had never heard the second part of this song, before. It left her quite sad. But we assured her that we have the choice to learn from our mistakes and REALLY make things better in the world.
One of the acoustic tracks is dirty. I needed to replace the battery in my mic. It wasn't the best preformed track and still sounds crackly, but I thought it kind of fit. So I left it in.
Lyrics:
It's a double standard
They are all children
Open our eyes
Without fears
No tears
Peace
"All the Pretty Little Horses"
Traditional American Folksong
REFRAIN
Hushaby,
Don't you cry,
Go to sleepy, little baby.
1.
When you wake,
You shall have
All the pretty little horses---
Blacks and bays,
Dapples and grays,
Coach and six-a little horses.
(REFRAIN)
2.
Way down yonder,
In the meadow
There's a poor little lambie,
The bees and the butterflies
Peckin' out its eyes,
The poor little thing cried, "Mommy!"

I will pass on the good comments. I've looked for pieces to work on with Ms. DU from time to time. I will continue the pursuit. My littlest is starting to gain an interest in recording. I would like to facilitate that, as well!
Peace,
Doug

Beautiful &mdash 06/24/07 - 05:23:13 PM
and heartbreaking at the same time. The intro is terrific - nice, almost Eastern vibe on the guitar, and the long pauses between the spoken lines worked well, creating a powerful tension. The singing throughout is outstanding - spot on and full of real feeling. The ending is perfect - nicely highlighting the last line. Great work, everybody. Thanks for sharing it. Peace. I tried to keep the beginning seem less defined, yet organized. Thanks for you kind words!

God bless the lot O' ya! &mdash 06/24/07 - 06:19:59 PM
Super job on this one Doug and clan. Made me misty eyed to be sure, but also angry at the way we humans have treated each other throughout our sorry history. Bravo! Bravo and encore!

Thanks, thanks! It was a song that choked me up after it was produced. I can't say that's happened to me before.
We are sentries, protecting our world from the mistakes of the past.
Peace,

Well done! &mdash 06/24/07 - 06:44:06 PM
There may be one or two minor production issues - none of which detract from this captivating piece with excellent performances from you all. Those guitar noises really add to the atmosphere - and I love the change - your wife's vocals are beautiful.
Loved it.

The singing is entrancing. The introduction sets up the folk song in a way I would not have thought of. It all works, a very enjoyable listen. Thanks for sharing. [ Reply to This ]

I'm glad you appreciated the intro. I thought of adding an ending. But I decided to just let it fall away.
Thanks for stopping!

Nice .. &mdash 06/25/07 - 12:32:12 PM
.. to hear the family singing and to hear an old
traditional American folk song too. I have no point of
reference to compare .. all singing is very well done
and carries the heartbreaking emotion - I too like the
kinda lo-fi crackle .. you could easily explore making
it sound more lo-fi (I think .. hmm GB 2 ..) do you
have any Auto-filter? I think there is some pretty good
presets for doing just that(at least in GB v3), you
could try using one on the master track .. see if you like going more that direction. My daughters will be
making their MJ debut soon enough ...a
cheery tune but with a hint of the dark way of the
world ..also an old traditional song. [ Reply to This ]
Hey Alan &mdash 06/25/07 - 03:27:23 PM
Thanks for your kind words! I'm not at my GB computer right now, so I'll have to check the filter situation later. I suppose I could record a stretch of noise and just loop it.
I'm happy to hear your daughters will be debuting at MJ! I hope to catch their music!

very enjoyable &mdash 06/25/07 - 10:21:28 PM
I don't know how you did the intro guitar part. but I found it a bit fasinating.
I to like the crackle gives a sense of a old LP being played. actually I think there is a loop (i don't know if it's in GB 2 ) of a old scratched record effect. [ Reply to This ]
Hey Vic &mdash 06/26/07 - 09:47:50 AM
Yeah, I started with four layers of guitar. Then I added some keyed in bass. I put in a perc loop, but wanted it VERY subdued. These were faded in a close proximity to the beginning. Then, of course the vocal. The changes were a challenge because I transitioned each segment shorter incrementally to the previous segment until I reached the one bar chord change sequence. I corresponded the vocal lines with the chord changes. It just made sense to me. The narration turned out better than I expected. I don't know if my production skills are improving at all. But the song seems to come across pretty well.
Thanks for the comments!
