Description:
For several weeks this Spring when stepping out of my Warren Street apartment in Park Slope my nose was greeted by the sweet perfume of blooming honeysuckles. The smell sounded something like this : >

Nice music, Warren. Where I grew up (in NY) there were the occasional giant patches of honeysuckle that smelled great. In fact, I seem to recall tasting the flowers. Thanks for the flashback :) [ Reply to This ]

I grew up in Yorktown, NY, surrounded by woods. There was honeysuckle in the neighborhood, and in the woods, and yeah it smells great.

I've got a niece living in Brewster ... and two nephews-in-law that grew up in Somers ... and I've driven both sides of the Hudson river valley ... but I don't think I ever passed through Yorktown. I'll have to do that next time I'm out meandering in the region. [ Reply to This ]

It's a good town to grow up in, but I wouldn't want to visit there. Haha. Somers is pretty close to Yorktown, which is on the Northern tip of Westchester. I'm in NY right now, and it's a reminder of how hot and humid it gets in the summer, whew! I'm glad to live in the NW!

before the drums, reminds me of lovely days at the fairground. I can imagine this playing on a carousel with laughing children. I know it's a million miles from honeysuckle but it's what I get and I really enjoyed the ride. Thanks Warren.

in the morning. This is just what I needed. It has a great Springlike, energizing momentum, and a nice melody. I'm with pianoman1 - I hear something of the fairground here too. Minor mix note - in my headphones, the drums sound a little loud in the mix. Minor point, and it may be the effect your were going for. Nice work. Peace. [ Reply to This ]

To keep those drums in ... or take them out ... that became the most difficult compositional question with this piece.
I've been experimenting with mixing percussion and "classical" instruments on a number of recent songs. This one started out that way, but after the opening, the drums just dropped out, as the melody swerved off on its own wayward path.
That felt rather unbalanced. So I tried taking them out. But then the music seemed a tad syrupy. So I put them back in. That restored a certain aggressiveness to the production - on both ends - which I liked better.
Are they too loud? Perhaps. That's street music for you : >

As others have said, this is an immediate mood-elevator, which is great! It's fun, but it also has a quirky quality that I like; all the stops and starts, I guess. I like the idea of combining different musical cultures, like the dance-feel drums and the classical instruments, and my personal thought is that the drums could have continued into the middle section as well, perhaps with a change of feel, or added percussion of some sort to create a contrast. Having the drums drop out periodically seems like a fine idea, but they dropped out for so long that I was wondering what was up with that.
