Description:
Here's another take on Linda's 'Psycho' vocal line ... I feel a little late to the party as there are at least 2 other excellent songs that have used the same sample, but, hey, never too late.
Not much else to say ... it was great singing on the same song as you, Linda! Hope you like this.
A song to have break-up sex to.
Only other thing to add is that I played about with the bass for ages ... still not happy with it ... but it's out there now ...

Your voices blend beautifully and I really like your high notes Steve. Superb production - especially the drums. Great song. No need for lyric printing because your diction is so good too. Fantastic.
Cheers

echoroom
Actually Len, some of the lyrics were done, er, on the fly, as it were. I tried singing the choruses the same register as Linda, which actually suited my voice, but they clashed too much, hence the higher harmony. First time I've mixed female vox ... it's really different (and difficult). Good ol' AD drums - the verses are the 'ping pong' setting ... don't have eat up processor time, though. Thanks for the kind words. pal.
Steve
mikkinylund
This is refreshing and awesome! Once again PJ Harvey comes in mind, don't know why - although it is only a positive reflection. Your vocals works very good together; blend as one. This is a very good collab! Now I just need to find a good reason to break up.... :)
echoroom
Hi Mikki - listened to your latest this morning - absolutely awesome track, can't wait for the cd.
I never thought of PJ, but with Linda's voice, and especilaly the mood of the verses, I see what you mean. First time I've done a 'duet' - We could be the alternative Elton John and Kikki Dee.
Really appreciate your comments.

echoroom
I loved your take on this Kenta - our versions are very different - yours is a lot darker. it's interesting to hear the different tracks people have made with this (Seca Mode has posted one as well) . Maybe we should instigate a Loop it or Lose it contest using one of Lindas vocal lines?
thanks for stopping by and checking this out

great blend. vocals are outstanding. Steve : you continue to amaze as to your versatality. Linda's voice sounds fab (touch of Shirley Manson).
excellent collab
echoroom
hey KTB - funny, I was trying to work out what this sounded like, and did think of Garbage - its a sweet vocal, with a touch of venom. The original vocal line took me in a slow, quiet direction, but as so often happens, the song had other ideas - I just do what I'm told.
Thanks for the thoughts
Steve

You ever turn on the radio, at some odd time of the wee hours of the morning, and maybe in a major metro area, or maybe, not so metro, but some smaller part of the world - and a tune comes on, that feels like it was made for you. And you listen intently, w/ disbelief that you caught this moment - You listen intently, and to the end, just praying that the dj would name the artist, but they don't... And maybe, you were able to get to the record button to catch just enough of it...
You spend the rest of some time, wondering..., who was that... You say things to yourself like, I knew that this was a place that I was supposed to be, if not to catch this tune, and maybe now, forever...
It was a rare find - You can't seem to be able to buy it - Definitely, a timeless event - A very intimate moment - It was made for you, and likely, no one else... And you're almost kinda glad, that the dj, didn't mention a name, because you just knew, that this piece was only for your heart and soul and that if were ever to lay upon the ears of the lessor deserving, that some how, you might have to share this moment..
No one will ever put things together in this way again, but this band might... But doubtful that they will because it is likely, that this was just a moment for them too. A moment when all things in the universe aligned...
Steve, you did a beautiful job of aligning things on this. And what a stunning job, Lida did, performing this. Strikingly beautiful. Her writing... Your writng...
Your singing!... Your playing!...
My chills!... My god...
I did take a copy and it is okay to remove the download option because truly, this was only meant for a deserving, hurting soul..., - A strange thing... to be selfish w/ pain...
Thank you. Macca
echoroom
Macca,
I almost didn't reply to this, I didn't know how to.
We write music, mostly I think, to express how we feel at that moment, to communicate and share, and send it out into the digital world, hoping it'll mean something to someone else, that someone will listen.
Thank you for listening.
Steve
bud
I like when you sing low against your own higher voice in the break. When you and Linda kick it together it just soars. Excellent production and "near perfect" bass. Sorry I couldn't help myself. Thanks for posting.
echoroom
Hey Bud - listened to your new track today ... sort of thing I hear and think ' why can't I get my stuff to sound like that' ... mixing envy??!! You do such a wide range of great stuff.
This started off experimental, but, as so often with my stuff, wanted to be liked so we had to have a chorus. Anyway, yeah, it was great singing with a girl, even if she was only virtual. Glad you liked it, thanks for listening and commenting.
Oh, and the bloody bass ... it just never sounds right to me ... i ended up putting 2 in the chorus!
Steve
cjdaley
vocal work from both parts. The drum sound is really special, sort of thin but really dynamic. the song builds beautifully from there.
echoroom
JC, I sound like a salesman, but I luurve Addictive Drums - really fab. This grooves along a little like garbage flirting with the jesus and Mary chain, dotcha think ... but Linda has a better voice.
Thanks for stopping by

Peter Bauckham
collaboration - an interesting song that builds up really well - love the instumentation. The vocals complement the music, as well as each other. Production up to your usual high standards. Thanks for sharing.
Peter
echoroom
Hey pete - I built this around Linda's vocal, starting with the verse beats - intended this to be lo-fi electronic, but the fake guitars wanted to join in ... this was gonna be Thom Yorke-ish, now its just ... -ish.
ta for tuning in
Steve
peacepiano
The two voices are a real treat on this song. You add lots of energy in the instrumental mix. Great song. Thanks for putting this one together.
echoroom
..may be better than one, but they are a bugger to mix. I'm kinda pleased with the drive this track has ... i think the drums help by chattering along. Thanks for stopping by Bill - loved your latest piece.
Steve
stevel
This has a really unsual feel begin with...with the call and response vox...and the the surging chorus comes in. Rock on!
Great performances from both of you
Steve
echoroom
Hi Steve - the intro is kinda misleading - i wrote the first verse with a different direction in mind, then it just seemed to want to rock out a bit - I like the intro piano as a little bit of misdirecton. I don't seem to be able to write anything over 3 1/2 mins these days, but, hey, short and sharp ain't bad.
Rock on yerself!
Steve (C)
Its always good to see the process of an artist, in this case we know what you started with and we can enjoy what you have built around it. Nice notage youve added to those few singing notes you were provided with...I also believe your voices compliment eachother well, well done champ!
echoroom
this was quite ... I'm surprised i got a song here, as Linda didn't know the chords, and I only know 4 ... and it turns out the root notes were black keys, which i tend to avoid.... anyway, this was a really interesting challenge , and we got a bouncy toon out of it, so it all ended well! The problem with having the vocal line is there's sooo mnay ways you could take the song .... hence it ended up a bit schizo ... but then look at its' parents!
Cheers bud
Steve
Mystified
What a great build-up and foundation this is to Linda's original track.
Your voices sound fantastic together and complement eachother so very well.
I really admire those who can take a separate vocal track and build underneath it, as I can't do the same. I always have to put the vox over the instrumental foundation.
Fab collab! Kudos to you both! :)
echoroom
...many thanks for the kind words. i usually tend to start with vocal lines on my own tracks, but twist it around if I can't figure out the chords, so doing this really stretched me. it took a looong time to get the two voices to sit well ... I think it's okay here. Thanks for the kind words and for taking the time to listen
LOL
Steve
This is fabulous. Nice production. Infectious rhythms. Love the way you two play your vocals off one another. Great collab!
Be well!

hey Mike - Firstly, love the new piccie .... cool shades. i realy enjoyed doing this, and realsied that everything I've done recently has been a collab, as are all my upcoming projects ... it's great having other people to play off, after going it alone for sooo long!
Am going to check out your new track right now, my friend
Steve
Although I'm still cranking out newbies they're not coming as fast because of all the time I'm spending on Goodwilly collabs. I was apprehensive about collabing at first...but once it gets under your skin it just wont let go.
BTW: Did you try to leave a comment on Vagabond? I see you faved it but when I looked for your comment...zippo. Sometimes they don't go through for some reason...

Steve...I think you did an amazing job with the simple acca I posted. You really don't give yourself enough credit.
Our voices go together we really well! Next time I should add to one of your tracks eh?
Thanks Steve :-)
echoroom
... you know Linda, I was worried 'cause by adding a male voice (and perspective) to this, it does change the intent of what you originally posted, so I'm glad that you're not mad at me for giving the 'male' side of this!!!!
The vocals work well together - I really like the verse parts. I know you're really busy, but will take you up on the offer on singing on one of mine in the near future. Thanks for your support.

Ironically when I was submitting my comment to your song Crash, last night, the site crashed as well. Now I'm not pointing fingers.....anyway
a slightly different thing from you. a duet non the less. it works out really well I might add. the chorus is just killer.
Elton John and Kikki Dee. Nah
Sonny and Cher, Nah
Captain & Tennile, Nah
Steve & Eddi, Nah
Well I guess you two need to do your own variety show. And don't forget Muggs the cigar smoking chimp to come out between acts.
Heck, i would even show playing guitar while riding on the shoulders of a bear driving a motorcycle.
echoroom
I remember the english band James saying that whatever they called their album, it refelcetd what happened in their lives, so they called one of their albums 'Millionaires'.
Unfortunately it didn't sell.
Anyway, the variety show thing could be great, although Linda is a lot younger than me, so it may look a bit creepy .... though we could appeal to all age groups, I suppose. I could tap dance, she could juggle .... you're booked to play guitar, but Muggs will play rhythm.
I'm just off to ring NBC .... sounds like we gotta winner!
As it's your idea, how about 10% Vic???

Steve,
Amazing. The lead guitar (?) synth (?) is blow-away, really well done. Your voices are perfectly suited for each other. Now I know you are a perfectionist---the bass is fine--don't touch it! I think you voice is totally healed--this cut shows it, fantastic falsetto! Love the splashy/flappy cymbal on the bridge. This thing goes so many places all at once. You are a busy guy, the stuff you have been putting out has been outstanding.
echoroom
... now to be fair Phil, i was actually pretty happy with the synth guitar on this, and in fact, thought the mix was okay ... then I listened to 'So Invisible' and wept.
I appear to have bought a shoddy version of Logic, as what comes out of my mac sounds very different to what comes outta yours!
Seriously, thanks for the comments ... i've learned a lot in the short tine we've collab'd and will continue to pick that big brain of yours!
Steve

Both in terms of Linda's original and in terms of your own stuff. Some nifty vocal things you've done, and an all round killer mix - very impressive. Wouldn't sound out of place on the radio (I hear INXS).
Excellent!
Neil
echoroom
Thanks Neil - appreciate your comments on the mix, as you are another guy that I listen to for mixing inspiration ... I was THAT far from getting ozone last night, and may well succumb today!
I couldn't quite get a handle on what/who this sounded like, but i can definately hear what you mean in INXS ... I take that as a real compliment.
Thanks for popping in all the way from down under

Have fun!!! Look forward to see what you come up with now :)
My one suggestion is to start out with a preset which sounds OK (there's one called "CD master" I think) and then run it with a song and just mess with each of the 6 sections separately to see what they do. My biggest mistake was to get carried away with the amount of gain I could get on the song, to the detriment of the detail (listen to Ledeb and Jim's latest versions of In The Garden to hear an example).
Have fun

I don't know why you didn't listen to me before when I insisted you and onesweetworld pair up and "do it".
Glad to hear such magic between your voices. I don't know how anyone can build a song around vocals like you did, but that just proves your extreme talent.
Great sound. I like your guitar parts especially.
echoroom
Yeah, it was about 4 months okay you said to check Lind's work out, and here we are, joined in vocal harmony. Dorseymatchmakers.com ..... could definately be a winner, as you've already paired up Estellie with JC.
For a complete musical eejit like me, it was really tough setting Lind's vox to music, and involved hours of prodding around bass notes on the keyborad to find root notes, but in the end, was worth it ... sounds like Thom Yorke meets the Carpenters to me..It's also the best two fingered guitar solo I've ever recorded, and utilises Logic pros Space Designer reverb set to ' the biggest delay setting possible'.
Lovely to have you back on the site Bob - welcome home!
steve
craft
the voices are outstanding and the performance is brilliant!!! Well done!!!
echoroom
Craft - I listened to 'So Invisible' as soon as Philip told me it was up - I was just bowled over by the track, the quality and production are absolutely outstanding ... sort of thing I listen to and aspire to produce... anyone who hasn't heard this should check it out NOW! So, thank you ... I appreciate your comments and support a great deal.
Steve
apb
.. you are on such a roll Steve .. a flabbergasting song
you built up here around Linda's vocal .. and I don't say that often (partly 'cos I have to look up how to spell
'flabbergasting' ..lol). Such passionate energy,
excellent production, radio ready, should be snapped
apon for commercial success real soon. Such high
quality output from you these past posts.
It's kinda "Garbage-some electronica" meets INXS(I've always heard that a bit in your voice/delivery haven't I?) in some way, if I was to place the 'overall' sound/vibe. What a combo. It would be 10's across
the board. Inspiring and such high standard setting as
ever. I'll be giving you a tinkle on the dog when I
make the switch over to Logic Pro.
Sweet.
to do a take or spin as it were on her vocals.....i liked the way you integrated your vice with hers.... seemless....
great mixing, great composition....like i said, inspiring.....
echoroom
...RAD. It's been really interesting to hear the differebt songs that came out of Linda's vocal line - your song purrs like a sly tiger. Thanks for listening into my take man, appreciate it.

echoroom
thanks henri - coming from a real player like yourself, i take that as a great compliment.

to hear two very different mixes of this... and yet they are BOTH so great!
i love how you added your vocals to blend with Linda's!
this is a work of art!
wonderful!
echoroom
Hey Faelin - nice to hear from you, been some time since we've heard anything .... hope that will change soon! yeah, it's been interesting hearing the different takes on this track - RADS is pretty smokin' but Skean and seca Mode have done really great things with it too. Never duetted before, so this was probably the only chance I'll ever get to sing with Linda .... although all my other friends are virtual too... it's lonely here in my head ....
thanks for dropping in
Steve
that i have not posted anything as Faelin lately.
Allen (RAD) and I have a side project going called Montgomery California, though. we just posted yesterday, in fact. come check us out if you have a minute.
i am working on one for myself now, though, we'll see...
working with Allen is addictive

Learn, Love, Grow... that's all one can do.
Alannah
... I am still in awe at all that I hear here at Macjams ... but this whole concept of ADDING the music later to an Aca vocal is still blowing me away .... I like this take on it ... and I especially like that you were able to take an existing melody (somewhat melancholy piece) and turn it into a rock song ... and quite successfully at that ! KUDOS indeed !
echoroom
Thanks Alannah - I think it would be great to do a LIOLI with one of Linds vox pieces, although unofficially that's what's happened.
The tone of the verse is what I originally had in mind for the song - dark, jittery beats, but then the song took a bit of a left turn and started bouncing around a bit, and I always think it's better to go where the song wants to take you, rather than where you think it should go (they're stubborn little buggers).
Thanks for your thoughts on this, rock goddess

Leon
to review your latest song, Steve! Been busy as always and haven't been here for like eons, so it is always great to get an email notice about your latest!
This is a great melding of your voices. Linda's voice is one of the best here in Macjams and you infusing your distinct vocal and musical style just pushes this piece several levels up. Very bold, unorthodox and unique in so many ways. The musical production also definitely showcases your all-around skills in music-making.
echoroom
Leon - it's great to hear from you again, and I'm honoured that you've taken the time to come back and listen to one of my tracks.Ii have a load of stuff on, but when Linda posted this, i just had to work on it - she has an amazing voice!
I hope things are going well with you - you're obviously keeping busy! Can't wait until you return with some more of your inspiring work. Until then, take care.

Break-up sex is something I'd rather not deal with, at the moment, though. But I DO know what you mean.
I'm not a bass player...but I thought it sounded fine. Did the job...
echoroom
Hey Bob - mixing and recording bass is always something I struggle with, so if it sounds OK to your ears, that's fine by me! The other versions are well worth checking - very different - rad projects' one is climbing the cahrts as we speak.

Steve,
As I've only been a MJ member for a few weeks I'm having a hell of job getting through all the stuff on here (I know, I never will!), but it's fun, and especially whwn you come accross a gem like this. Truly a great song, with a cracking dual vocal, excellent production, the works really. I'm very impressed.
I'm gonna try and wade through some more of your stuff - if life doesn't get in the way - and look forward to future posts from you.
Cheers,

this is so nice. i love the way the 2 vocals work together, and that melody in the verse is sooo good. i like the backwards reverb on that gtr going into the chorus a lot. you did an amazing job on this one.
echoroom
...good to hear from you - you've been doin' some amazin' work lately. I had a lot of fun on this, and spent hours playing with different reverb settings in Logic (hence the backwards sound .... dial up 51, big f++k-off reverb). The voices work pretty well together, and the song kinda wrote itself ... it's nice when that happens (rather than the usual sweat n blood involved).
Cheers man
Steve

I herd another version of this earlier tonight.

you really got a cool thing going here.

nice interesting changes

Hey John - yeah, i get Bowie a lot (my wife thinks it's 'cause i kinda warble when i sing), but hey, i always take it as a compliment.I'm glad you liked this ... i don't groove -out much - this is about as groovy as i get.
Nice avatar, but it'll give me a headache if I stare at it too much!
Pleased to meetca!

Sorry I'm sooo late getting around to commenting on this one Steve, but I've been working away from my computer a lot the last couple of weeks.
Anyway, this is just bloody amazing, really love the bass line, and the bloody piano. I know it's been said by others that there's a Bowiesque edge to your vocals, and there is, man there sure is here, and it sounds incredible, you really let it rip. Mr Bowie was my first major obsession I bought Ziggy when it first came out and was a huge fan for many many years after, I'm fairly familiar and fond of his vocal range and style. Here you sing like Bowie does only on his very best stuff. Fantastic.
Linda's voice is beautiful here too. Great blending together.

good to hear fro you Willie - away from the computer - how do you cope?? I'm away on work for a few weeks, so i din't know how I'll survive without the Mac! I got into Bowie with the 'Scary Monsters' album, and Ashes to Ashes is probably my fav song of all time... I think what it is, alot of singers I was influenced by (The Bunnymen, Nick Cave) were also influneced by Bowie, so it sort of filters in. Odd thing is, i don't really hear it myself ... probably self-denial.
Anyway, thanks for the comments ... it's good to get the feedback 'cause after working on a track, I completely lose perspective. I guess it'll be a while until you post something new then?
Oh, and i've ordered a Black Angels t-shirt - totaly into them!

I did a version of this song too:0}
Your vocals mixed with her are fantastic. The music and arrangement is top notch too.
Check out my take on her vocal sample if you get a chance. Its a lot darker than your version.
echoroom
Hey man - just checked out your version, it's kickin, a darker take than mine, which is kinda ... moody pop ( a new MJ genre). It's amazing the range of songs that people have done with this sample, isn't it ... i think we should start a club or something. Thanks for checking my take on this , much appreciated.

This tune is simply fantastic. Cooler than cool has been up to this point in history.
echoroom
...was actually recorded in a freezer, to get that sense of coolness.... I'm more of a fridge magnet than a babe magnet.
Ta Ray, but I still can't get my drums to sound as good as yours!
Thanks for posting, or I'd have never listened to The Queens Party and felt totally inadequate.

I am not familiar with the other versions of this out there but I have to tell you that this is simply astounding! The foundation you lay for this vocal track is out of this world, stunning, just stunning. Excellent production, very well put together. Keep 'em coming!
echoroom
Great to hear from you - it's been a good few months since you've posted a track. Thanks for the kind words ... with linda's sweet vocals, it would be hard to mess this up, but it has a nice kinda moody energy.
Gotta go change my hat size - thanks Bran!

As usual, I really enjoy the mix of electronic and acoustic sounds in your tunes, Steve, and the vocals are great---makes me think of X or Velvet Underground a bit.
Though, I thought that the ending was abrupt. Perhaps a fade out while repeating that final crescendo section?
Lovely track, in spite of my picky ears--DL'd.

Hi Greg ... thanks, I always thought when i wrote solo stuff it'd be fully guitar based ... then i realised how difficult the guitar was, and how much I like electronic noises ... I also seem to use a piano on everything now (thank god for quantising!).
This song I think is a bit short - just over 3 mins, and as the chorus only appears twice, i could've got away with repeating it, couldn't I? Fair point - I think with some recent tracks, I could've developed them a bit more ... too impatient! Good comment .... i think I needed someone to tell me this!

pengui
but this song had a real Depeche Mode feel to it. I like the two voices together, blended well. the song has a real original feel to it as well.
(hey! I finally have internet at home. I can actually listen to macjam songs now!)
echoroom
hey Rich - maybe it's the use of electronics ... i thought the verses sounded a bit like Thom Yorkes soslo stuff, whereas the chorus sounds, i dunno .... poppy angst. Glad to see you finally got the internet sorted out ... now you can listen to your own stuff on MJs too! Will one day mix 'Head', honest!

that I missed this... you've established yourself on my e-mail notifiction list... truely impressive... your sense of dynamic build and drama... you employ sound like theatre... wonderful stuff... and I think some of this can't be taught... intuitive...
remember "simple minds"... this captures that passion and vibe... don't you forget about me..
great work... no GREAT...
echoroom
... employ sound like theatre... wow! I do like music that is dark and dramatic, not very good at uplifting music .. this has a nice intensity to it. The track was going to be quiet, like the verses, all way through, but took a bit of a left turn as the song developed.
You know I'm nit good with compliments, so i'll just say 'thanks' and take my bow.

The intro part doesn't quite do it for me, but once you get to the chorus the song really takes off. Great inflections in your vocal line there Steve. Your vox in the chorus sound great with Linda's.
Some of the production in the verse doesn't really resonate with me (I like the more organic drums rather than the heavily effected drums), but there are parts of this song that are incredible. I don't mean to be overly critical, because this is awesome work, I'm just having a bit of trouble digesting parts of it. Guess I have to listen to it a few more times to really absorb it.

Hey Mason - real interesting comments, as the song was originally gonna be pretty down and moody, like the verse all the way through, and then it kinda took off in the chorus. If the song had the same mood as the chorus all the way through, it'd probably be a lot more 'accessible', so i think i get what you're saying... the parts work against each other to an extent.
Interesting take ... what happens when you only like bits of a song, do you fast forawrd through the other parts!?
Appreciate your critique .... much better than saying you like it all and lying!!
Steve
Tiny_Man_Inside
It's starting to work for me as I listen to it more.
One of things that I love about listening to music is finding stuff that I didn't quite appreciate the first time around and starting to "get it" after several more listens... I like to challenge the listener as well. Some stuff isn't meant for immediate digestion.
BTW - great work on the new McBoy tune.

I find it hard on this site, as I tend to give comments after one or two listens, whereas in real life, there's more time to let stuff sink in ... I've recebtly started downloading and not commenting immediately ... but you're comment's still valid.
Thanks for returning!
Steve
have I not heard your stuff till now. I will be checking more out over the next few days.
This is very good stuff
(Your voice is good on here too Linda - I think this might have been the best that I have heard you sound)
;-)
excellent

I know ... same for me ... I think I've only heard one of yours up to noe, and will rectify this!
Thanks for the comments ... Linda made me sound good!

She is so freakin' cool!!! :-)
Loved the lyrics!!!!! Truly! :-)

Thanks for the props on the lyrics - sexual tension and psychoanalysis are my specialities!

Fantastic singing, both of you. I'm trying to catch up on all the MacJams I've been missing recently, and here's one of those gems that passed me by the first time. Great production all around.

...been so swamped with work that I've fallen two Steves behind! Now there's twelve zillion comments, a googolplex of comments and not any real new and succinct way for me to say THIS IS FREAKIN AMAZING that hasn't already been done, but I sure wish I could.
The blend of your voice with Linda is a perfect balance; the differences only strengthen the likenesses. The production is... well, maybe Rik should just go bang a stick on a cardboard box for a while. This is polished without losing any of the blood and bone that gives it strength.
Awesome job, Steve. Sorry I'm so late to the party.
Great sound. loved it. Brilliant production
Peace Dee.
