Description:
A few weeks ago, I received a request from the Belgian Hepatitis C association. To enhance public awareness for the disease, the Hep C association took the initiative to bring out a CD with Belgian artists and bands, all bringing one track about 'living with Hep C'. I was much honoured they asked old moorlandt to cooperate, and of course I immediately agreed.

For now, I'm just uploading the instrumental track, as I'm still working on the lyrics and vocals. In fact it's the first time I work this way... normally the instruments, lyrics and vocals grow together to make one song in the end. So it will be a surprise for me as well to hear how the final result will sound like...

Thanks for listening.

Stirring &mdash 07/02/07 - 04:01:58 PM
When I first saw "instrumental" I had a moment of disappointment because I was looking forward to your wonderful singing voice. But this is very listenable just as it is. Sure it sounds like a song missing its lyrics rather than an instrumental, but that's all to the good and I'm sure whatever vocals you come up with will fit like a glove, as it's so finely set up to receive them.

Lovely vibe here Walter. I look forward to hearing where it goes next.

You're right, 'instrumental' was perhaps not the brightest of choices. Hmmm... 'unvocalised' would be more honest :-)

Rebsie, thanks so much again for the compliments! I'll do my very best for the vocalising. And thanks also again for your great support by purchasing my album. Looking forward to yours. AND I hear a collab in the near future ;)

This is an outrage! &mdash 07/02/07 - 04:04:40 PM
... that I was never asked! After all, I lived on Rue Emile Max in Schaarbeek for a few years! What, just because I'm not Belgian??? Well, I guess it kind of makes sense now... will calm down shortly...

Okay, with that out of the way, I have several comments.

%u2022My 6 year old almost never comments on the music I listen to here, but he stopped his video game (I believe everything he needs to know in life he will learn from video games) to say, "I really like that music!"

%u2022I like it too! It has a slightly spooky feel for me, but very well done. Kind of like music for "The nightmare before Christmas" or something like that.

%u2022It is solemn and beautiful.

Can't wait to hear the final product!

Your 6 year old son has an excellent taste! Haha... just kidding. Well, i don't know what grabbed his attention... Perhaps the classic chord progression and easy to swallow harmonies? Hmmm... i'm a lousy analyst.

You're comparison with 'The nightmare before Christmas' has surely something to do with the bridge at the end, just before the last chorus. I had the same feeling when listening to the finished piece...

Thanks for lovely visit again, clark!

Good start &mdash 07/02/07 - 04:48:15 PM
You have something really good cooking here. can't wait until you add your voice and your lyrics to this. Of course, it's a noble cause which makes it a very nice and honorable piece of art no matter what. I like the string arrangements very much - and even though it sounds a bit melodramatic - I think that even lyrics with a positive outcome will work just great on this one. It will kind of balance. Peace/Mikki

mikki &mdash 07/03/07 - 01:31:50 PM
Now THAT's exactly my fear. It sounds indeed quite melodramatic in its instrumental version, and i'm well aware that i'm not the most 'sunny' vocaliser on earth :< That's why i keep postponing it. I guess i'll wait for the most bright summerday and will wear a lurid hawai-shirt before i even think of getting closer to the mic:)

Thanks for stopping by, Mikki. And again thanks for purchasing the album (which seemed to have traveled the world before it arrived at your address...)!

The concept is excellent..... &mdash 07/03/07 - 01:29:45 PM
The mix of instruments is excellent.

The music is excellent.

Can't wait for the finished article.

I may have noticed a couple of timing/sync errors, but nothing too off-putting.

Take care.

Paul.

Great seeing you on my page again! And thx for the nice comments. What exactly do you mean with the timing/sync errors? Can you point out where they are located? That would be most helpful! Thanks so much again.

Timing issues?? &mdash 07/05/07 - 03:58:38 PM
Hi Walter......

I've listened to the piece many, many times since my original comment and the only areas of 'timing' problems are in the first 30 seconds, where the Cello is introduced at 17 seconds and then at just before 24 seconds where it seems to have another very slight delay.

Both of these are quite possibly simply the mechanics of the Cello, so maybe it's nothing to worry about.

These possible technicalities do not take anything away from the rich experience of listening (over and over) to this beautiful piece of music.

Take care.

Paul.

Excellent mix Walt &mdash 07/04/07 - 02:28:03 AM
This has such depth and resonance already that I'm really interested to hear it once you're finished with it. Beautiful combination of instrumentation and a REALLY good sounding mix - hope you can hold that when you add your vocal track. I think a few of us could qualify for poor communication of late (me included) - hope the CD's going well - I'm still planning to get a copy (just slack!).
The music is very sad, slightly scary so far. Congratulations on the gig - that's serious progress.
Cheers,
Neil

Don't worry about poor communication from your side, if any. Your moral and practical support is engraved in my heart and soul :-) Yes, i had fun with the mix, and i'm pretty happy with the sound of the instruments as well. Especially the cello, which is in fact part of the latest Boldt 24 - Pack Volume II. Sounds very natural when playing around with the 'expression' tool in GB.

I'm not sure if there will actually be a gig related to the project. To be honest, i didn't even think about it before... Thanks for making me nervous :-)

amicalement,

This is mesmerizing. Draws one in... Cyclical but never boring... Very clear and clean, but not cold... A very warm and emotional feel to it, in fact...

Very moving...

almost classical in feel &mdash 07/04/07 - 07:13:51 PM
I like the way the piano begins the piece, building up shortly to the entrance of the cello, and further unfolding and expanding with the bass and percussion. Very good pacing.

The arpeggiated piano patterns reminded me of "Tubular Bells". Very hypnotic.

Nice balance with the bass and percussion, very artful combination with the piano.

The pizzicato section with bells in the last part is very effective.

I think that this track would benefit from just a hint of reverb; the piano and cello sounded a bit dry. You've provided such a nice orchestration (indeed, this piece has a very "classical" atmosphere) that it could be enhanced with reverb, adding warmth and fullness.

Very imaginative piece. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to it.

Wow, this is a very beautiful review of the track! Thanks so much.

I'm not completely surprised that you mention the 'dryness' of the piano and cello. I cut back the reverb quite a bit on both instruments as they were provided by default, just to give a more intimate feeling in order to draw the listener into the song. But perhaps you're right, and i will certainly review my decision once the track is completely vocalised.

Thanks again for popping in, Cameron!

Ahhhh &mdash 07/05/07 - 11:34:17 AM
... there's that "haunting" moorlandt sound that I have grown to love. Again ... the goosebumps popped out - I could only imagine the enhanced effect of this with the addition of vocals to this. Even without knowing the subject matter - I imagine it would have evoked the same images for me - someone sitting inside a box looking out a small window at life going on all around them ... wondering how they ended up in the box. The growing number of people living with HepC is truly alarming - glad to see some awareness being raised.

You goosebump lady :-) Thanks for listening again... And wow, i think you just gave me a great hook for the lyrics. I love that metaphor about 'living in a box'. Later this week i will have another talk with hep C patients, and i will surely put that thought on the table...

Thanks so much for being you.

dark drama... &mdash 07/05/07 - 01:27:16 PM
...which is your stock-in-trade, Walter. I love the mix of strings with the electro percussion, it works extremely well in this piece and gives it a very contemporary feel. This works really well as an instrumental, but it's very easy to imagine your great deep vocal on this.

Looking forward to v 2.0.

Haha, i know the word 'drama queen', perhaps i'm just the male version (drama king? does that exist?). But i promise: one day i'll make a 'happy' song... For now it's just this 'heppy' song i have to finalise first :-) Thanks for your ever great support, Steve, and also for purchasing my CD. I'm anxiously awaiting yours...

stands well as an instrumental &mdash 07/05/07 - 08:01:46 PM
this is marvelous.

this stands well as an instrumental. but, i can also hear your voice singing on this too... it's going to be great!

i really like the glockenspiel - so much so, i feel it needs to be introduced briefly earlier in the piece, and possibly also used at the very end...

thanks

smokey &mdash 07/09/07 - 03:17:13 PM
Well, i can second your opinion on repeating that glockenspiel bridge. I've been thinking about it too. Perhaps i might do so in the final vocal version. But then again, i also like the surprise effect of it. Less is more :-) Let's see how it evolves...

Thanks a bunch for stopping by again. Very very much appreciated.

the title/description and music was all it took for me to be moved by the subject. The music, to my untrained ear, is gorgeously created. I can't imagine what words could accompnay such a subject as Hepatis C, but then, I'm not as creative as you are ; )

You modest girl... 'untrained ears', 'not as creative as me'... I've been listening to your master piece 'release me' many times, and still believe this is one of the very best songs posted on MJ. And you are more than welcome to help me out with the lyrics... Thanks so much again for appearing on my page.

Cello... &mdash 07/08/07 - 05:12:56 AM
...is always such a rich instrument. In this instance, it gives a somber, sad quality to the overall sound and, as such, is so very well chosen. I agree with Cameron about the reverb. The number could use some (just a touch) on every instrument in order to give the piece a bit more depth. I can't even imagine where you'll go with a vocal melody and lyrics for this as I have never heard your music before this, but there is such potential for development with your instrumentation as a backdrop. Like everyone else, I will anxiously await your final rendering. By the way, the graphic is just perfect. Did you design it or is it a design for the whole program? It is extremely effective. Best wishes for a successful and satisfying conclusion to your project. Let us all know when it's finished.
Peace.

thanks for popping in, and for your thoughtful comment. Yes, you did listen to one of my songs already (not on my profile, but on my 'Particulate Eden' collab project), and i remember that i was a bit confused by your comment... Still don't know what you meant :-(

No, the artwork is done by a bandmember of Nudex, one of the other participating bands in the project.

Thanks again for your thoughts, i really appreciate it a lot!

Instrumental or with your fine tenored voice its always a great listen. The cello and the piano certainly drive the tune but its the string work that captivates me. Really outstanding. You have such mastery of your craft. Intensely moving. What a challenge you have set for yourself to match the lyrics with this Exceptional work.

Beautiful &mdash 07/08/07 - 08:20:19 PM
My computer fights downloads. I was able to listen to the first 25 seconds. Beautiful...classical...sad. Then the cello game in. I felt the rest of the music coming with great anticipation and then my computer...

Oh Walter, the music makes me think of the music of composers of a long ago century. The Greats.

I am a lover of all music you helped me remember how much you can feel, almost see beauty through music.

Thank you for being a part of this project and for bringing your soul towards it.
