Description:
Song 17 in my (failing) experiment in recording a new song (on average) each week. This is a really old song; I used to perform this with my original band 16 years ago (the picture is one of said band in our last gig together back in.... 1992, I think). The only recordings made of it were cassettes made at rehearsals. I've always wanted to record it "for real." This isn't perfect, but it beats the rehearsal cassettes. The full story will eventually show up in the "Essays and Stories" section of my band website: http://web.mac.com/reveith/iWeb/Misses_and_Mystery/Home.html . I think the writing/arrangement reflect my then-great love for the sound of The Talking Heads and songwriting of Lou Reed.
Lyrics:
I was watching wrestling on TV—
it’s entertaining and it’s free—
when for a second I thought I saw a chariot race,
then I blinked and it was gone.
Then I was watching the president speak—
he’s been on every night this week—
when for a second I thought I heard him speak in Latin
(et tu?) but it seems I’m the only one.
CHORUS
Had my eyes closed when it happened,
the world changed, I was napping.
I just blinked once, what can I say?
The fires of Rome burn again today
I met this guy named Virgil in a New Age bookstore
working on the bio of Washington in the style of Homer.
He said there are no heroes anymore and it made sense.
So I walked down the block
and the whole world looked like a 60’s protest song.
Someone quoted Sophocles, but people passed him by
to browse the video store for a porno flick
and the world looked dense (chorus)
Where I go, the gym is like the public bath.
This guy said, “Whatever you believe is cool,
but we’ll crucify the dissidents with newspaper spikes.
That’ll hurt like hell.”
Nero smoked his Havanas outside Java Joes,
talking about burning down the town.
He said, “It doesn’t matter who you find to blame, kid.
If it’s rebuilt in your image, it’s just as well.” (chorus)
