Description:
An educational, nautical song for small children, with a poignant message of the way of the world- especially good for bath-time! Based on an old traditional melody of which I found not much online but these Ref 1 where the manus is attributed to T.Lindén.

where along the line the more romantic text -But in my heart are swimming you- switched to the more poignant -a boat sails over, down come a net- I have no
idea, but that was the version I knew and opted to get translated.

Sardines(MJ kids):
Carla - age 9 and her guinnea pigs Lilly & Luna (appearing courtesy of Wildcat)
Anastasia - age 7 (appearing courtesy of Ian Baird)
Kerstin 'kid A' Brady - aged nearly 7 (at the time of recording), appearing as I couldn't stop her.
Rebecca 'kid B' Brady - aged nearly 6, appearing because she didn't want to be outdone by her sister. :o)

Sharks (in order of appearance):
APB (English/this arrangement)
Estellie (Spanish - harmonies, 'awws' and additional backing)
Secamode (Spanish)
Wildcat (German)
Blaky Smith (French)
Cameron (harp)
Haribo (Korean)

My sincere thanks to you all for your fabulous performances and making this possible and my sincere apologies to the 'Jaws' theme extract, when you've
got your Fitch cello out, you can't resist :o)

In loving memory of my late mother Ellen (May 1931-May 2007) who sang this to me at bath-time, over and over - much to my delight.

Lyrics:
In middle ocean/I medelhavet,
Sardines are swimming/simmar sardinder
A puski duski,
A puski doo
A boat sails over/Ett båt seglar ovanför,
Down comes a net/När kommer ett nät
A puski duski,
A puski doo.

En el oceano,
nadan sardinas,
a puski duski,
a puski du.
Navega un barco,
baja la red,
a puski duski,
a pusky du.

im Ozean
schwimmen Sardienen
a puski duski,
a puski du.
ein Boot fährt vorüber
ein Netz fällt runter
a puski duski,
a puski du.

en plein ocean
nagent les sardines
a puski duski,
a puski du.
dans l'eau un bateau
jette ses filets
a puski duski,
a puski du.

바다한가운데 헤엄치는 물고기
bada han gawoonde heumchinun mulgogi
[middle of the ocean, swimming fishes]

배가다가와 그물을 내려
baega dagawa geu-meul-eul nae ryuh
(approaching boat, throwing net)

Alan, it was a pleasure and an honor contributing to this song. Thank you for inviting me to participate. I think you did a wonderful job putting this project together, and the end result is just great! Cheers to my fellow sharks and sardines!

p.s. That is a beautiful photograph of your mother!

bathing in delight &mdash 07/10/07 - 01:51:24 PM
This is great fun, beautifully constructed by all involved! What a lot of work this must have been to put together! A minor critique is that the sloshing bubbly water sound effects may not want to be continuous all the way through the song, they tend to muddy the overall mix a bit... others may disagree, but I'd probably "duck" them a little more (pun intended) under the singing sections. Great singing, splendid harp, sweet harmonies, and beautiful singing from the kids, woohoo to all!
ttfn,
Drakonis

I was so excited to see this up! It was a very fun thing to do, and I'm happy to have harmonized and helped out with such a great collab. Everyone did a lovely job! Ear candy for everyone in this one!

Alan, you really did do a wonderful job organizing all the sharks and sardines and making the arrangement a very special one. I didn't know your mom, but she's beautiful and looks like a very happy woman. I bet she would have loved this and felt very proud of you.

you pulled it together so well! &mdash 07/10/07 - 07:55:21 PM
Congratulations, Alan and everyone, for contributing to this wonderful project.

The mix is well-balanced -- no small accomplishment with so much going on! This is a very pleasant wash of sound, child-like and almost cartoonish in its concept.

Perfect for the bath!

It was an honor to participate in this. Thanks so much for asking me.

What a sweet picture of your mother. She was quite beautiful on the INSIDE too I am sure.

Delightful &mdash 07/11/07 - 07:07:25 AM
Delightful, filled with good feelings. Congrats to all!

FWIW, I second Drak's comment about the sloshy watter sounds... it is probably a matter of personal taste, but I too found them a bit distracting after a while; maybe fading them in and out at various times would work better? Just a thought.

But overall, a fantastic, wonderful collaboration!

Alan - what a great group you've put together, and what a range ... your last posting was heavy metal, and now this! This is such a sweet track, and having it sung in different languages is a stroke of genius. Great production, but most of all, a great idea, and catchy as hell.

Love the Jaws bit at the end too!

Steve

Great fun &mdash 07/12/07 - 07:26:34 AM
It's an emotion to sing with MJ kids and faithful talented MJer "sharks".

Nice job Alan and thank you for having come look for me. It's a big honor. Pleasant recreation after a sad beginning of year, it was just what I needed and I am happy to have had the luck to join me to the group, the occasion to take out my microphone of the drawer and to use it again...

You made a beautiful work. Congratulations for this nice gathering, your purpose and your motivation.
Radiant face. Yes, I'm sure she is proud of you...

I hear a bit &mdash 07/13/07 - 08:38:49 AM
of Montovani, his music was so sweet and romantic and when I hear the accordion. I hear a bit of his great accordion in his tremendous orchestrations. Like the harp as well and list goes on.

Love the children sound as well. This would be fabulous on a childs tv program. Perhaps when there is something dealing with water-fun.

Way to go. Very, very original. this really came from left field. A unique surprise!

it is so great to hear such sweet sounds in an age of harsh sounds!

Again, way to go!

Thanks to you all &mdash 07/13/07 - 01:06:14 PM
Haribo- thank you for being "on-board" and working extra hard around your technical difficulties to make your fine contribution.
Feter- it was a pleasure to put together and work with all these great MJ artists.
Peacepiano- thanks Bill. One of the great things about MJs.
Secamode- Thank you Sergio, pleasure to have you "on-board" our little vessel.
Drakonis- a true labour of love Eduard. I checked the file, as I wondered myself if I "quacked" down the sound FX .. but I didn't .. my bad .. easily fixed for a remix. Thanks for the tip, I do want clarity - especially for the educational aspect.
Screamalexz- thanks Chance: both fun and painful at times - a strange mixture of
emoticons .. er .. emotions :o)
Sdoane- I am extremely delighted to hear that. Thank you.
Estellie- thank you the ever patient Estella, who had a hard job to add something not in the arrangement before, that would pass my quite critical ears. I'm glad you enjoyed the end result.
Caroline- ah Caroline, thanks for letting me keep dropping you versions 1-6 along the way.
Cameron- it's hard to target a song for (say)

whoops got cut 'orf ..(continued) &mdash 07/13/07 - 01:35:13 PM
under 5s. You get instant feedback if they don't like it. It was great to have such
a fine musician playing in this and even got me using the score function. "what- like notes and stuff?" .. I said "embellish" .. not make it brilliant!!! ;o)
Tom Wounded- thank you. I will check out Page France ASAP.
Composerclark- thank you Clark, much appreciated. I agree with Eduard's comment and I think the "ducking down" solution is quite easy. Noted.
Lengold- glad to provide a little break for you Len. Cheers.
Echoroom- thanks Steve - I think this is a 'one-off' for me. It was great to try redoing
a traditional song that had special sentimental value for me and to work with so
many. The different languages thing is an aspect in the original, so not my idea - it was just to contact some of the fine fellow MJers and ask nicely. Of course I could have asked quite a few more: moorlandt (thanks for the fav), Craft and Einar to mention a few .. and maybe do Swedish myself, but apart from anything to do with voice suitability etc .. the song would simply have gotten too long for a young kids song.
Blaky Smith- Thank you Marc. I appreciate very much your contribution, knowing it came at a difficult time for yourself... and don't worry, Sergio was also complaining about that 'high note' too .. shhh .. ;o)
TheTiler- didn't the kids just steal the show? they did a great job... and even
Carla's guinea pigs singing in there too .. my kids love that .. they wait for Tanya's bit .. then go "shh shh . .here comes the guinea pigs!" .. as I told Tanya, it's the ships parrot if anyone asks ... ;o) Thanks.

Great Job!

To quote C.S.Lewis "When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up."

No problem with finding the "Jaws" extract amusing, I mean ..
if you install that free Fitch cello GB instrument .. you
just can't resist, can you? ;o)

I'll take this chance to thank Rik and Kenta for their
faving too. Cheers guys.

You really could use this song on an 'international children's album.' Lots of work, but I'm sure it was a labor of love. I'd agree with just about every other comment here. This is a great song- from concept to posting.

Cute! &mdash 07/14/07 - 08:23:32 PM
Fantastic concept Alan - I'm impressed. Especially with all the kids' singing and the way you've "internationalised" the song. I've wanted to do something multilingual for MJ for a while, but never thought of a children's song. Excellent call! The dedication to Ellen brought a tear to my eye in this context.
Top stuff my friend.

Wondrous &mdash 07/15/07 - 01:07:40 PM
and magical... I've listened to this a dozen times so far, and I can't believe how delicate and enchanting this is. 'Cute' is not a word I would use - it trivializes what's going on here (although that's probably a case of the word used so often with cutesy-poo kiddie-giggle stuff, it's lost any real meaning).

Utter magic. Thank you so much for letting me add this song to my world - it's another reason to smile in the middle of an ordinary day.

I Agree with Rik &mdash 07/16/07 - 12:55:04 PM
This is truly magical, pure distilled wonder of childhood.

You did a marvelous job of both balancing all the performances, as well as imagining the song's arrangement in the first place. I'm very impressed (and love the Jaws. Very, very funny.)

itiswotitis - thanks Jo, pity your twins didn't make the ensemble of cuties. International children's album? Nah, I'm just happy to keep this song alive for
some more years to come with any luck.
kristyjo - thank you very much, appreciate it.
jiguma - the idea is more than half the battle, I was feeling a little inspired .. and
it just felt like the right thing to do, you know.
Rik - thank you, I just hope I am not the cause of parents getto-blasters getting
soaked in the bathroom and never working again. lol
The Orbiting (Lisa) - as a Scot, I'm surprised to be distilling childhood ...(!)
watch out for the feints! lol I figured the "Jaws" bit as a little gag for the parents at the end..
the age group this is targeted at should hopefully never have seen "Jaws". That
is my youngest daughter and Anastasia giggling at the end .. I don't know what
Ian did .. but I had a library loop of her giggle from some of her early work (?). I did explain the end music was from a scary film involving a shark .. and she tutted and went "Daaaaaad!" in that roll-eyes way ...
Wildcat (Tanya) - I'm glad you had fun doing this, that's a large part of what it's
all about and glad you liked how I tackled your voice in the end .. it was admittedly trickier for me (not your fault) but more just the lower register female voice (due to the key really suiting us fellas most), I think I squeezed out a little clarity.
Craft- thanks Antonio, glad you stopped by and enjoyed my own multi-collabing efforts. I'm glad to see you are a great multi-collaber devotee too. It's the way forward I feel for many here.

Thanks also to Sudra, eleveneyes, Rosita, clementine and pumpkinxo for your faving too - appreciate it.
