Description:
If you've heard any of my other music, just be forewarned: this is not like any of it. Turn up your headphones--it won't hurt; trust me. (Original title: The Dark Side... but the mood is too light. The Other Side seemed to evoke a look at what might be...It's only 2:28 minutes. Tell me what you think.

...the community of MacJammers who've discovered and appreciate your music, Paul...

This is very reflective and gentle, not dark, but with an eerie quality of exploration that's compelling, not frightening....

Had to really push the volume to get my headphones to do it any justice... I'll have to come back to it with the more efficient headphones to get more oomph. The track may benefit from a combination of an eensy bit of compression coupled with a higher overall level...

I continue to be impressed with the territory you cover....

What an experiment!! &mdash 07/11/07 - 01:39:41 AM
Paul, this is brilliant stuff. It's experimental music with structure. A great structure.

I agree with Ed that the volume on this (and other pieces) is always almost flatlining, but I just boost them up before listening so it's no problem for me, I do this with many of the downloads from MJ's.

The piece made me long for it to carry on because it seemed open-ended and because of the less esoteric musical parts (the piano phrases), the piece kept me wanting more, and the strings.....well the strings managed to keep my feet on the ground.

Thanks for the kind words in the note, Paul. I appreciate your thoughts and comments.

If you have an hour-long version of this music, I for one would be mighty interested in listening.

Take care.

Paul.

Experimental New Age &mdash 07/11/07 - 04:23:38 AM
My first reaction was that, while I liked it very much, it seemed more "new age" than "experimental." But then some dissonances began to show up, and I thought, "very cool! This is experimental new age music - a new hybrid!"

And indeed, it is very cool. Please continue with this! It's always good to stretch one's comfort zone a bit.

And yes, I agree, the original title doesn't seem quite right; it is a lighter mood, relaxing in the way new age music usually is, but with periodic and unexpected dissonances that make you sit up and pay attention.

Good job again, Paul!

I think... &mdash 07/11/07 - 08:22:52 AM
This is a dream of childhood one has when just waking up and you are between worlds. You try to hang on to the mystery, remembering the merry-g-round and the forest you once played in, but the coffee is perking, the birds are singing, and you are being drawn up and away from the long ago memories. Maybe I'm weird, but that's what I got out of it. It's cool how you can create so many genres of music, and thank you for doing so! :-)

very pretty &mdash 07/11/07 - 11:07:16 AM
i like the piano motif, and all of the sine type sounds that you have put over this. a really nice piece of music.

That's different &mdash 07/12/07 - 03:57:05 AM
but none the worse for it. An excellent foray off your normal path.

This works really well. I can hear in a cinematic context to augment something else happening.

What more gems are lurking in your cupboard?

Cheers

Dick

As if to say: &mdash 07/12/07 - 02:29:40 PM
Just because it's on the "other side", doesn't mean it's necessarily "bad".

This is definitely not "bad", my friend. Really fine. Downloaded and looking forward to more.

the picture is &mdash 07/13/07 - 06:06:41 PM
unique to say the least! Never seen a picture like that. Does have a kind of inner feel to it in a weird way. Like the lightness to it. But I love that style, not sure if it is really a dark side feeling to me, but that picture really is a change of pace in a darker kind of way.

Hey, thanks for sharing, this does seem to be a un-normal Paul style. But good !

Way to go

This is just structured enough &mdash 07/14/07 - 10:17:35 PM
in its randomness to keep me listening. Very peaceful, moving, stream of consciousness. Like it a lot. Will probably use it (if you don't mind of course) as music in my classroom. I like to play, as the students arrive, something like this to get them in the mood to learn. This song seems like it signals open possibilities.

In the still of the night &mdash 07/16/07 - 10:27:03 AM
This is a wonderful tone painting. An abstract painting, although your picture evokes certain images. Life under water? I prefer to take music as it comes, and yours has a taste I rarely encounter. This has a stillness to it that is quite unique in the midst of the a lot much more busy music.

Great stuff!

Victor.

What I think? &mdash 07/23/07 - 11:20:17 AM
I like it. A lot!

And it does not hurt. Most probably it will heal...

Most soothing after a day of MJ-listening. (Oh, I liked it!)

Thanks!

we want more :-) &mdash 07/30/07 - 04:47:24 PM
The music is wonderful. Excellent choices on the synths and fx. Very delicate as in "close to the edge" by Yes or something Pink Floyd might play. The mood is definitely light and airy. Well done.
