Description:
A rework of one of my earliest GB recordings called AlwayAway. I posted the first version as a response to a comment I saw by somebody saying that they were tired of hearing songs on MJ that were in 4/4, in C and at 120 bpms. So I guess this song is a direct result of MacJams. If MJ didn't exist, neither would this song, so thanks MacJams!
No matter how much tension there may be between two people, there's always away to get away from all that gets in the way between me and you.
I just got BFD software drum module and thought I'd try it out while reworking a number I wrote a while ago. Thanks to Pie for turning me on to BFD!!!!
The "mood" in this version was largely inspired by a Korean movie I recently saw calle "The King and His Clown" which is a beautiful story of love and commitment that was probably the impetus in me redoing this track.
Lyrics:
The Queen's Party | ©2004 Ray Kainz
The Joker has a tendency to cry at the Queen's parties
So the Queen always rains on his parade
She still never fails to have fun at Queen's parties
While the Joker - he's sent away
He's sent away
The Queen is in the kitchen cooking cakes for The Queens party
The Joker's not around - always never in his place
It's time to serve dessert and entertain the party guests (at the queen's party)
the Joker's in the streets giving away free cake
giving it away - giving it away
THERE'S ALMOST ALWAYS A WAY
TO GET AWAY
FROM ALL THAT GETS IN THE WAY
BETWEEN ME AND YOU
THERE'S ALMOST ALWAYS A WAY
TO GET AWAY
JUST ME AND YOU
it got away - ahhhhh!
The Joker has a tendency to cry at the Queen's parties
So the Queen always rains on his parade
The Joker's never heard the Queen say she's sorry
but the Joker's got a way of always winning the charade
He's got a way
THERE'S ALMOST ALWAYS AWAY TO GET AWAY
FROM ALL THAT GETS IN THE WAY
BETWEEN ME AND YOU
THERE'S ALMOST ALWAYS A WAY
TO GET AWAY
JUST ME AND YOU
IT'S ALL I WANNA DO
get away - I got a way!
The Joker may jest
and the Queen may seem aloof
perhaps it all because
I'm always away from you
THERE'S ALMOST ALWAYS AWAY TO GET AWAY
FROM ALL THAT GETS IN THE WAY
BETWEEN ME AND YOU
THERE'S ALMOST ALWAYS A WAY
TO GET AWAY
JUST ME AND YOU
IT'S ALL I WANNA DO
get away - I got a way!

OK now the real stuff... I absolutlet love your producing and playing... your wimsical humor is a thumbprint... you really think different on guitar... you paint with those 6 strings... and the vox harmonies are so cool and so musical... but the best thing is.. I want you to knowthis sounds like one of my fav artists... his name is Ray Kainz
really I'm always knocked out... fav'd and DL [ Reply to This ]

Hey Scott. What a coincidence, somedays my favorite artist is Ray Kainz too! On other days he's just a rapidly aging rocker who feels silly making silly rock tunes but comments like yours keep me going! Thanks for your support Scott. I mutually admire your art and your craft, keep it up! --- What Do You Care?[ Reply to This ]

Ray, you rock. The exceptional guitar immediately draws me in. It creates an immediate, impossible-to-ignore feeling, with an edge of craziness, which is a perfect setup for the lyrics that follow. Your songcraft is remarkably sophisticated, reminiscent of a multitude of genres. Your voice is, as usual, is spot on and daring. I am always hugely impressed by your music, but never more so than with this track.

That guitar must have at least eleven eyes! Crazy riff! Your vocals are so expressive and high energy everything.
Someone as talented as you are should consider posting songs at MacJams - The home of real rock stars!
I'm blown away. You really rock out in the most insane way.

In French this song has messed up hair? I think I know what you are saying.
French is a beautiful eloquent languange and that's why I don't speak French cuz I am neither eloquent nor beutiful, but I appreciate your time and comments! --- My latest:

Matches with the song very well.
Drums and vocals are great, but what I like the best are the guitars and bass on the instrumental bridges and intro.
Fun song. Thanks. [ Reply to This ]

Killer tune! &mdash 07/13/07 - 11:45:42 PM
There's so many excellent tunes on MJ's, but this one really stands out. The production on this sounds radio-ready. BFD huh? That's some outstanding drum programming! Thanks for allowing downloading-this will definitiely be on my iPod. [ Reply to This ]
BFD &mdash 07/14/07 - 09:22:24 AM
I heard a post by PIE that was just drums demonstrating BFD. If he didn't tell me it was programmed i would have bet a million dollars that it was a human drummer playing. BFD is quite amazing. It's a CPU and RAM hog but there are ways around it. Thanks for stopping by! --- My latest:

contrary motion scales! &mdash 07/14/07 - 05:19:19 AM
This is fantastic! Everything about it seems perfect. You have a great voice, and the whole thing just kept me transfixed from beginning to end. I love those contrary motion scales you use to start and elsewhere. The way you play with metre is really, really cool. Is it 3/4? 6/8? 4 2?
I think I've heard this three times now... Great job. You've got yourself a new fan. 10-10-10-10 [ Reply to This ]
contrarilly speaking &mdash 07/14/07 - 12:57:24 PM
My original version of this had even more contrary motion going on. I wanted this version to be a bit less frantic so some of the oppossing guitar lines got dropped but I left in a few contrary lines. They seem to illustrate the contrary nature of the two characters in the song.
Regarding the time signature, I thought of it like this - the verses are 2 measures of 3/4 followed by a measure 6/4. The rest of it is all 6/4. The difference between 3/4 and 6/4 might be negligible to some but to me there is a difference. Thanks Clarck for stopping by! --- My latest:

Man, oh, man! &mdash 07/14/07 - 10:44:15 AM
This is the first time in a month (even more) that I've listened to an MJ track. Been neglecting you guys longer than I wanted. But finally I tune in again and I get this.
This is just top-notch stuff! I love the way you play around with the 3/4 beats. The guitarplaying is a joy to listen to. As are your vocals.
Well, everything is a joy to listen to. Even for the 4th time in a row.
Going for the 5th...
You rock, man!

Fat production! &mdash 07/14/07 - 11:06:33 AM
Loved the bottom end and focused on that a lot as my drums tend to the skinny side. Great job punching it up!!! [ Reply to This ]
Hey Alan &mdash 07/14/07 - 01:45:37 PM
My theory is if the drums sound good then everything else will sound good. Getting the bottom end to be tight and full without being overbearing or boomy is something I too have been focusing on. Lot's of compression and EQ tweaking. I thought the drums and bottom end sound pretty darn good on your House of the Rising Sun version. The whole thing sounded pretty huge! --- My latest:

2nd listen &mdash 07/16/07 - 06:44:12 PM
Ray, I undersold this on first listen, must have been at the end of a string of new songs or something. This is really an exceptional track in the genre. Your timing is what really grabs me (as well as the excellent vox, guitars, drums etc). This is as tight as the proverbial fish's. I definitely hear Belew, as much in your vocals as your guitar, but especially in your attitude. This is one of those MJ songs which would stand proud in any company. Excellent production too. Congratulations!

Dumb! &mdash 07/15/07 - 02:19:01 AM
Ray - I nearly missed this, and what an idiot I would've been. The production on this is first rate (I bought BFD but it just crashed my iMac). Love the dark kinda Duane Eddy guitar, and your vox are ace - I'm crap at harmonies, so this makes me really sick. The mood of this is kinda angsty but upbeat, and quite playful - had me boppin' round the living room.
fav'd and fanned.

I hear a little Mr. Bungle in this but I like yours better. Actually it's more XTC - which I like a lot more. Cool time changes that really work well with the vocals. Inspiring. [ Reply to This ]

BFD Rules &mdash 07/16/07 - 01:03:29 PM
BFD is an awesome program, but you have to know how to make them do their magic, and you obviously do. Very, very, good work on the drums, Ray. BTW, if I had a dollar for all the plug-ins and gear Pie has talked me into buying, I'd be able to pay for about a quarter of them (if a plug-in leaves a train station going 100 miles an hour...)
Great lyrics and the chorus is killer. I like the way you rhymed 'aloof with you.' Very clever, mister.

I LOVE the non-4/4 &mdash 07/17/07 - 01:33:34 PM
This has a really cool hop beat that's something I could dance to, once I got used to it. LOVE the 6/4! The drums are great, too, particularly in that meter. I'd have never guessed they weren't played by a slightly crazy person, except for the discussion. Your voice - yeah - love it, too. [ Reply to This ]
