Description
This one is a collab with Kimmee, otherwise known as Kim Seifert from Second Life.

The words are traditional and date back to at least 1930 but the actual author has never been identified. There is no copyright on this song.

The arrangement is something less than traditional and it was motivated by hearing someone else singing it as a light ballad.

Many thanks to Kimmee and you will learn more about her as she develops her profile here at MacJams. She's got some really beautiful originals and I'm sure you'll enjoy her work.

Hey! Way cool!
Nice ballsy/bluesy vocal Kim! Fine grungy musical interpretation Alan! Kudos!

When you get a chance Alan do check out the version Vic Holman and I did a ways back (it's halfway between the Animals and Frigid Pink):

Nice to hear that grunge is alive and doing well. If those huge electric guitars won't get white people up dancing around and removing their clothing I don't know what will.

Voice
Kim's powerful voice is perfect for this song. The heavy guitar and drum is not traditional but works well with the voice making this a fresh interpretation of the old standard. Great mix, I didn't miss one word of the vocals or one note of the guitar lead. Thanks for putting this together.

Meh..
Hey Al...

Remember back in the day when you gave me crap for doing covers? Hahahaha...

Well this is one of those covers that have been killed thu the years... by many a band... mainly cuz the song is so simple.

I just didn't like it bro.... I've heard others I like much better... kinda like beatin' that dead horse... ya nah?

Oddly enough one of the bands we played a show with the other night played this tune...

I guess I'm just tired of all the re-hashes of it.

To be quite honest the best version I've heard of this song (other than by the Animals) was by the duo of Joe and Eddie. Look it up sometime.

Keep rockin Alan, I like your stuff more when its original.

Fair call :)
No worries, bro - If people were not honest about what they think then what good would it be. I appreciate your thinking on it

It IS indeed a fair call Alan...
We received a similar comment on OUR cover of this tune from our good friend Neil Porter. I understand why some folks feel this way. It HAS been done to death...and yet...it remains a classic and is a hell of a lot of fun to do.

A tune which is quite similar and hasn't yet been done to death that you might consider tackling is "St. James Infirmary." MJ's own DANGLING GOODWILLYS started off with a cover of this one:

---a grungier alternative approach to this tune might be very cool. Also I think it might lend itself well to Kim's vox!

Be well bro!

Way to go
Alan and Kimmee this really brings me back as a kid with Eric Burdon and the Animals.

You know a tune has something going for it when it brings ya back.

Thanks for sharing!

An interesting take
There's a reason tunes like this one get "done to death." They're just damn good tunes.

Personally, I find it fascinating to hear people's interpretations of standards and this is one of the better ones.

I love the overdriven rhythm guitar bashing away and this is a perfect vehicle for Kim's powerful voice.

I think that voice could be spotlighted even more however as this recorded version doesn't quite have the energy the live performance at Sterling had the other day.

To that end, might I suggest (if you haven't already) doubling the vocal track and panning each slightly left and right, along with perhaps a bit more reverb?

And Si, you may want to revisit what the lede guitar is doing in the last two verses. There are a couple of spots where the riffs are intruding on the vocals and you're better than that.

Thank you, Snow!
Kim and I share one characteristic, for sure: we're hotter live than when the record button is pushed. Your tips for giving the tracks greater depth are good and I will definitely try them out. I've avoided reverb as much as possible mostly because of the words of the Mighty Ikh but it would be good to see what just a touch plus doubling the vocal tracks will add. Your point on the lead is also well-taken as my intention was to augment rather than be intrusive and she does such a hell of a job on it that it'd be well-worth re-doing the lead one or three more times to make sure it's getting it done right.

Thanks!
