Description:
Old Swedish melody. The origin is unknown, but was supplied with lyrics around 1650. The author of the song lyrics wrote that he "found the melody among Swedish antiques". Nothing more than that is known as far as I know.
Lyrics:
There are lyrics written around 1650, but the recording here gives just the original melody. The lyrics consists mainly of long description of the province Dalarna and its nature, and I don't think it would add much of value here. But the photo gives you some pictoral description.

delicate and subtle &mdash 07/15/07 - 04:27:23 PM
I love how you subtley build on the theme.. with a complexity in the rythem of the finger-picking along with the dynamics... a wonderful sense of patience in the pace...you paint so well with six strings [ Reply to This ]

Lovely piece... &mdash 07/15/07 - 05:01:02 PM
You make the complex sound easy, but of course it's not. What rich sound you get out of your guitar, Johannes. Very preety tune and you probably play it better than the one who created it. Really, really pretty. [ Reply to This ]

Very pretty, in a solemn, dignified way. Restful, but it seems to speak of harder times... Another great job, Johannes, beautifully played. I hope you are enjoying your summer. Ours just arrived a few days ago (!). [ Reply to This ]

Thank you Clark. Our summer has bee quite cold and rainy so far. But I believe august is going to be wonderful!

Ziti was over here yesterday... &mdash 07/15/07 - 07:50:59 PM
...and we were trying to describe what makes your music special to my friend John, who is himself a very good fingerpicker... One of the things we came up with, AGAIN, is pace...
There is never a sense of hurry or of anything frantic in your playing. The tune leads the fingers, or so it seems... And each tune seems to unfold at the proper tempo, each note and phrase having it's proper sounding and phrasing... And that doesn't mean that they are all slow, either, because they're not... But I've never caught anything gratuitous in your playing... And there is always a sense that this tune is being played by a human being...
This is a very beautiful tune, and the arrangement allows the guitar to sound deep and rich.
The photo is just icing on the cake.
And now I want to move to Sweden. Again.
Ed

Thanks a lot my friend for the feedback and tell Z hello from me! Sometimes I still can get struck by the strange effects MJ-ing can give. The notion that people in Massachusetts can be discussing my guitar playing is somewhat unreal and at the same time very tickling and inspiring. Sometimes it feels more than a dream than for real. But I like it. It gives life some new kind of significance.

Always love seeing a new Curry tune in my email! &mdash 07/15/07 - 08:30:23 PM
Restrained playing on this Johannes, so we can hear every (perfect) note. You do indeed seem to give yourself to each song you play for us here - it feels almost like a window to your home and your self, as well as a historic Sweden we'll never know.
Gotta get me one of those Bower Books if it makes me sound like this ;)
Thanks for this one,

And yes, this tune IS really somehow a window to my self and my world. Think it is the one of all my guitar arrangements that I like the best. Some days I can sit around playing the tune for hours, with new variations. It is like something that gives peace to mind. Almost like a little addicted to the song, really love it.

so lovely.... &mdash 07/15/07 - 10:37:13 PM
...the music and the beautiful photograph!
:)
What strikes me about this piece in particular are the nuances--how those notes just sing. You take time and let the notes color the texture of the piece overall--just as the colors in the song art portrait create a visual harmony.
Beautiful harmony! Thank you :) [ Reply to This ]

supa-dupa! &mdash 07/16/07 - 07:49:30 AM
You know I have a preference for these pieces that you mic, much more than the direct ones that don't seem to contain this subtlety and ambient sparkle. Maybe it's the Furch, but I am so glad you found a quiet space and time to record this! Like Ed says, the pace is perfect, starting as a basic statement of the theme and building slowly with little ornamentations. There's a lot for me to learn in this one. Love it! [ Reply to This ]
quiet time and space.... &mdash 07/16/07 - 08:15:03 AM
Can I tell you a secret about this wonderful man....He IS a quiet time in space and time!!! Whenever he wants to, and indeed needs to, record and play his wonderful tunes, he just places himself with his guitar and does whatever needs to come out from his big heart! He is also a notoriuos dreamer...
Happy you appraciate his music :) I do too!

Like that beginning &mdash 07/16/07 - 06:11:47 PM
renaissance type feeling. Very courtly and lute like, especially so pronounced at the beginning. Then the more contemporary-celtic soul stirring sound, trill's and thrills!
Like how you added the samba like feel 3/4 of the way through to give a great variation in the three sections. Then the strumming sound as welll with that 4th type variation. Plus all the added sections are very nice to hear. Nice recording.
Again nice variations on the whole piece.
Cool 2 string on and off attack at the end ! That ending rounds it out to a fine piece!

What Ed and Scott said... &mdash 07/17/07 - 11:15:33 AM
your playing is disciplined poetry. It draws me into your song... into your playing. Given the some of the negative atmosphere of late, this beautiful tune of yours is soothing and encouraging.
So glad you and your music are here. [ Reply to This ]

Oh, sorry, don't know anything of the negative atmosphere of late. Not on MJ because I have been absent from here lately. Not in the world because I have not consumed much news at all lately.
Anyway. Whatever it is, I hope it will be resolved!
Thank you Jack, for the love you give!

Excellent playing &mdash 07/18/07 - 07:49:12 PM
I really enjoy folk music like this especially when it is filled with such pathos. You play it beautifully. I really envy your guitar playing ability! I'm not Swedish, but I spent some time in Jonkoping and Oland. I actually wrote a symphonic tone poem in University that I called "Svensk Sommar" which used a summer hymn I found while attending a church in Sweden as one of the themes. Thanks again for sharing this lovely song! This is a sure download!

Thank you professor Macboy. Had to search wikipedia to see the meaning of the word "cadences". Guess it means the "flourishes" that ends each verse.. hope I got it right. This is a place for learning. Anyway I am very happy to recieve appreciation from you, who know so well what this is about.

cadences &mdash 07/20/07 - 07:55:28 AM
a cadence is a place in a piece of music that feels like a stopping or resting point..... in tonal music, cadences are classified by their chord progressions......like at about :47 seconds till :51seconds into the song is your first cadence......its a great device for musical storytelling.....

Hi Johannes, peaceful melody and the picture takes me straight into a story from Astrid Lindgren... Eeeeeeeemiiil - rakt i snikkarboden... well, maybe not that event, should have a more up-tempo tune I guess;) But maybe when he sits down with his friend Alfred... du och jag, Alfred... du och jag... The touch of sadness seems to go with the Swedish folk tradition. And also my own compositions have often been said to bear some sadness within, and I believe it is so.

Curry Captures What Is... &mdash 07/21/07 - 08:14:38 AM
so often lost in a recording session --- the *feel* of the composition. All the observations about his style and technique largely spring from that elusive ability to feel... and love... the music he plays.
More than style OR technique, it's what defines my friend Curry's offerings as more than mere performances and has progressively moved his work closer to impressive art.
I, too, Curry, find joy in the special opportunity the internet provides to hear pieces of other cultures' music. In my mind, it makes our world seem more like a community, where I feel lucky to have such nice neighbors like you and many others here.

Wow Joe, some comments just makes me warm in heart. And it is surely interesting too read your insightful analysis, things I have never thought of myself. I am keeping this in my heart because some things takes me a while to internalize. It may take me some time to see what you see.
When I saw your rockin' icon here, it struck me that it was a long time since I heard music from you, so I went to your page to find that your lates post was made more than a year ago.
I am gonna send you a note in your mailbox too.
