Description:
I took several different approaches with Conflicted. With the music, I took a bit more of a simpler approach. The rhythm guitar chords are a bit more direct and melodic in parts with a definite “less is more” attitude. Certain areas were a bit more over-played in earlier versions but I found that the song was cluttered and needed to be scaled back a bit. I also didn’t use as much over-dubbed and layered guitars. The drums were also approached with a simpler solid beat, especially in the verse and chorus.

Towards the end of the writing process, I added the idea of the sustained guitar chord intro. I really liked the uniqueness if this kind of intro and decided to use it again in the middle of the song.

The lyrics are very different from anything I’d written before. The chorus was written last and is the only part of the song that uses any kind of a rhyming patten. With the verses and bridges, the lyrics were really written more to flow with each other with no conscious thought to hold to any kind of rhyming pattern. This style also presented some interesting challenges when recording the lyrics.

The last part of the song to be completed was the spoken word sections. These parts went through several changes and re-writes before finally taking form. I opted for these parts over guitar over-lays and solos.

Lyrics:
Conflicted
This will not be another case of deception

Running away from the lights in my eyes
That are blinding the night without reason or rhyme
A sense of sound that is piercing in silent taunting
Me to the point where I can’t hear my own voice

Escape your mind like an island prison cell
Without visible restraints but keeps inflicting pain
Chorus: I see the truth before my eyes
I leave conflicts behind me
An inner piece of my mind
Accept what faith has dealt me

Another splinter in my side by side with you and
Your twisted thoughtfulness unlike any other vice
Build a box shallow and bury all emotional
Ties that bind me to this collapsing bridge

Escape your mind like an island prison cell
Without visible restraints but keeps inflicting pain
And with each passing breath that you take from me
I see inside inside your soul a dark abyss
Chorus: I see the truth before my eyes
I leave conflicts behind me
An inner piece of my mind
Accept what faith has dealt me
The truth will not set you free
The damage has already been done
The evil of men has never been more apparent
Redemption never stood a chance
Another clear cut case of a frozen state of mind
This will not be another case of deception
There will be no more trust
You cannot rely on this madness
Only now at the end do you understand

Sorry I didn't get this comment in sooner, in fact I was in mid comment last night when something came up and I had to abort! Better late than never. I really like this, the drums are right on it as well as your playing. I also think your mix came out quite well for you can hear everything! Kudos Dave!
