Keywords:
jazz piano trio (3)
Description:
This is me playing piano, using Akoustic Piano running through GarageBand.

The drums are from Drums on Demand, Jazz/Latin edition.

The bass is GarageBand Upright Jazz Bass.

I use a Yamaha P-120 for my controller.

This is actually an alteration of a project I did for someone. She gave me a lead sheet of a song of 18 bars. And she asked me to make a jazz piano version of it.

So for this version, I altered the melody enough to make it unrecognizeable as the version she sent me. (So she wouldn't say, "How dare you post my song!" Well, now it's MY song!)

I could have played through the same changes, with various kinds of improvisations, to make a three-minute track, but I just was not in love with the chord changes, and thought I would throw in a few of my own, to lengthen the song.

So you'll hear some blues changes, and some assorted jazz changes.

And I think the final result was pretty decent. Hope you all like it!

I've been using Synthogy Ivory for a couple of years, but I just started using Akoustic Piano recently, and for the moment, I think I like Akoustic Piano better than Ivory.

Hardware:
2004 eMac 1.25 ghz 768mb Ram

Yamaha P-120 controller

I always look forward to your tunes when the link comes up in the emal. Why. Number 1. your so da$@n good. Number 2, you play HAPPY music :) What is even more cool is that it is happy jazz. It uplifts, I think you should seriously have your music played in hospitals all around the word because your music really has the right ingredients to help lots of people!

But of course getting them to understand how therapeutic your music is and how it can really help them is kind of like "you can't lead a horse to water" kind of thing.

You are a treasure John. You are truly one of the few at MJ that have the musical medicine-power to really uplift. I know you are religious as well and it really comes through in your wonderful choice of pieces you play, in a very good and uplifting way.

You are so consistent in playing really good stuff!

Sorry &mdash 07/18/07 - 01:27:39 PM
JOHN, when I typed "word" I meant "world':)

But in a way, word could be true because of how spiritual your music is.

Bill, thank you for your kind words. I suppose 'happy jazz' might be a good way to describe my playing. I like to think that I sound maybe a little like Vince Guaraldi, who surely had his share of 'happy jazz' tunes.

And yes, you could say that I am religious, but more precisely, I have a relationship with God through Jesus Christ, which began a few years ago, and which will continue through eternity, all due to God's grace. And indeed 'the joy of the Lord is my strength (Nehemiah 8:10),' and I am pleased if this joy comes across in my music.

John, some very nice touch's here. Your signature style and pizzaz. A light airy, fluid recording, with great dynamics in the playing and mix.
well done

Pizazz is a word I've not yet heard to describe my music, but hey, Karm, I'll take it! Thanks for listening.

I've been waiting a long time to hear one of your numbers. This is one of your best. Piano is sharp and the drum programming is right on. Very enjoyable piece! Thanks for sharing.

Happy happy &mdash 07/19/07 - 06:06:38 PM
Yes, 'happy jazz' pretty much describes this for sure. It's hard not to be infected by the joyful feel in this. I'm always hugely impressed by your jazz chops; it would be great to hear you play some day!

Of all the various jazz styles &mdash 07/21/07 - 07:09:07 AM
I have heard evolve within the scope of my lifetime, this is still my favorite. In my mind, it's *Popular* Jazz... accessible and infectious.

This airy piece, happy and uncomplicated sounds like a soundtrack piece paced to a satisfying day's work.

Nicely done... and played, John.

Thanks, Joe. &mdash 07/21/07 - 07:49:57 AM
Joe, thanks for your kind words. And yes, it's my favorite style, too, as you might imagine.

And my style and technique are not nearly as refined or cutting-edge as some of the great players of our day (Cyrus Chestnut and Peter Cincotti come to mind), but I think even with my limited vocabulary, I can create what some might call a feel-good track. Plenty of room for lesser lights like me, I think, just because this particular genre of music has such appeal.

Reminiscent of Red Garland.
The chords in the intro especially.
Nicely played.

You've heard . . . &mdash 07/26/07 - 10:36:39 PM
You've heard of Red Garland? Then you're more than qualified to comment on track like this. I have a CD of his, and he was a monster of the piano, although not as well-known as other piano jazz greats, like Oscar Peterson or Dick Hyman. I wouldn't be able to touch him in a million years. But I do thank you for the comparison. Aim for the stars, and you may hit the moon, they say.
