This is just what I needed &mdash 07/19/07 - 11:02:22 PM
Had a long day full of trials and tribulation - none too serious to mention thankfully - but enough to appreciate some soothing music. Nice use of the keyboard guitar I presume - as I recall that's one of your talents among many. Thanks for posting - this is really refreshing.

i wish &mdash 07/19/07 - 11:34:37 PM
i could fall asleep at work in the afternoon. With this heat the water hits the spot.

As always excellent key work and structure. really did a good job on manipulating the guitar sound.

somewhere recently i saw a really disparaging remark about how the I-IV-V-I chord progression is old, worn out, and that only a novice would write a song based on it. ah ha! a challenge! this fired me right up!

thanks

Perfect summer song &mdash 07/19/07 - 11:59:48 PM
I like how you put all the sounds together so perfectly. It is calm, yet full of energy. I'll be humming along with this one.

wasn't for the comments above I would have believed that was real guitar. Lovely relaxing tune - ideal for a summers day drive.

it doesn't really matter if it's a real guitar or not.

what matters is what you hear.

considering all the computation between my mouse clicks a few weeks ago and the sound coming out of your speakers right now, it's a wonder it sounds like anything at all...

thanks!

Kiddie Pool &mdash 07/20/07 - 08:24:03 AM
This really is as refreshing as everyone says it is!

Someone explain to me how that works?

I'm sitting in a kiddie pool with a sombrero and a cold beverage with a slice of lime or something and I see the same lovely sky and water!

What a perfect attitude adjustment!

I'm taking the rest of the day off!

Thanks Smokey!

thanks

here's an attempt at an explanation:

this is the I-IV-V-I chord progression with a vengence.

there are four different patterns of 451 here.

i saved the best pattern for last, although by the time it arrives, it just seems like the most natural place to go from the preceding other three patterns.

the other three patterns are repeated and arranged to avoid monotony as best as i could. the mix brings in the elements in various ways to keep the energy going.

since i set up the guitar noodling on the chords, by the last pattern it has this nice resolution feeling to it when the guitar finally comes in. you just *know* it's coming and it's satisfying to finally hear its inevitability.

and that steady V-I resolution throughout just feels nice. over and over.

Eno-esque simplicity... &mdash 07/20/07 - 08:27:27 PM
...coupled with old school Eno-esque wimsy...

This lifts the spirits...

Lovely unexpected elements such as changes in the drum patterns... never quite what it seems, but satisfying all the same...

V7/IV too &mdash 07/21/07 - 03:51:22 AM
It doesn't get much more simple than I - IV - V - I, and yet you manage to make something that is so enjoyable that the listener isn't remotely bothered by the predictability of it all -- bravo!

I see you're also using V7/IV, which gives a slightly different colour of I. It's still functionally a I chord though, so no need to change the title!

This is a lot of fun. Thanks!

to be sure i understand: this is in the key of C, but here and there i used a C7, and i guess that's the V7/IV? i guess that's because a C7 would also be the dominant seventh in the key of F...

and a question: in the last pattern i also used thirds in the bass: F/A and G/B. do they still count as IV and V, or is there a special designation for those?

thanks

FIrst Inversions &mdash 07/21/07 - 09:49:50 AM
F/A and G/B are called "1st Inversion" chords, for which the figured bass is a 6 over a 3 (6/3), meaning that there is both a sixth and a third above the bass when the chord is in its most compact, or 'close' position.

So, in the case of G/B, you'd have a B in the bass, with e figures 6/3 above it, meaning that there is a G in the chord (= a 6th above B) and a D also (= a 3rd above B).

The harmonic analysis shorthand for all this, though, would be: IV6 and V6 respectively.

If you had a V7 chord in 1st inversion (G7/B), it would be a V6/5 (or V6/5/3 if you wanted to use the full, non-shorthand, notation (but nobody uses that!)).

The C7 in your music is what I was referring to as V7/IV -- you were right about the reason behind that, which is that C7 = V7/IV -- but it is still functionally a I chord (i.e., it is still just a decorated or altered form of a I chord), so you could theoretically call it a Ib7 (I'm using "b" as a "flat" sign), although people tend not to do this; the convention is to call it V7/IV.

More info than you probably wanted, I'm sure!

Cheers, Clark

not too much &mdash 07/21/07 - 03:54:41 PM
no, actually i like music theory!

i am a little bugged however about how "play the third in the bass" becomes rather inscrutable: i guess IV6 seems odd to me: i would think IV6 would mean F-A-C-*D* - as in F6.

that Ib7 really rings a bell - i might have read that in a jazz chording book once...

one other comment about the V7/IV - i was only thinking the Bb in the C7 led nicely into the A of the F chord (like a leading tone, and then meoldically continuing to the G in the G chord). but the V7/IV notation also says that the C7 was *resolving* into the F - a simple V7-I resolution. i don't think i would have thought about that way, but now it makes sense. way cool! thanks

"i was only thinking the Bb in the C7 led nicely into the A of the F chord (like a leading tone..."

That is exactly what it is! Some people call the seventh of a chord a leading tone, since its tendency is to resolve downwards by step to a chord note in the next chord (Bb to A in C7 to F, as in your example). Most current theory books would call it a 'tendency tone,' a more generic term that includes leading tones in their more traditional sense (i.e., 7th scale degrees), chord sevenths (i.e., the 7 of C7), and many other chromatically altered tones (such as the 3rd (Ab) of a Fm chord in the key of C major; the Ab tends to resolve down to the G in either a V (G) or a I (C) chord. Using a minor iv chord in a major key is called "mixture," or using a "borrowed" chord, since you can look at it as "borrowing" from the parallel minor)).

You have figured out intuitively what a lot of music theory students struggle with!

"other" &mdash 07/23/07 - 10:54:13 PM
is always an interesting classification. This piece has acoustic qualities in that guitar but other instruments are more obviously synthesized.

I like the character of this. The relentlessly upbeat chord progression and that guitar riff give it a very sunny character. No one can listen to this and not get into a good mood.

although i played the keyboard to capture the patterns, it is not heard in the final mix. i took several software instrument loops from the Remix Tools jampack and totally changed all their notes to fit the patterns. the organ way in the back (you might need headphones to really hear it) is shifted early by a 1/8 beat because it sounded to bubblegum-y on the beat.

i then added one violin loop from the Orchestra jampack, but again, all the notes are changed.

i also used a trick i use a lot: a sound in the intro (water in this case) also serves as a gentle cue at the end, that you have indeed come to the end of the song...

thanks
