.. you have the ears to pick out what I did with loops etc.
I spent a fair amount of time 'treating' Rebsie's vocals in
various ways. I started this on Thursday night a few hrs then,
then same again yesterday late afteroon. If you get your
feelings back on this, let me know. My key goal was to
use some Irishy instruments but at the same time make it
fresh and dance-club ish .. I must admit I have what I
consider a slight advantage to this approach: I have never ever heard this tune in any shape or form before, surprising but true.. and I kept it that way during production, thus
I had no point of reference. [ Reply to This ]
I'll promise &mdash 07/23/07 - 09:26:52 AM
I give you a note when I have some thing going on.
I start with a tune with violins and I had Richards, vox and I also try with Rebsie, but I could not feel like I am use to do... SO I sing on that tune and post it to MY LOVE... he he

hiya alan :) &mdash 07/21/07 - 03:24:31 PM
the beginning with bells is really charming and also like the beat but the highlight of this tune for me is that mid part, where you made a repetition of some Rebsie's words with rocky music change for the second verse, that is really cool. And really like that simple melody of acoustic guitar, hidden little bit behind rebsie's singing (at the beginning of the song). It has very quiet sound, but so beautiful.

good use of loops the vocaals seem to fit in more towards the end! Speaking of the end the comic boing is one of my favorites! [ Reply to This ]

..ah, a fellow 'comic boing' fan :o) .. when you got a convenient gap, it is hard to resist: it's presence is
used a metaphor to remind everyone, this is a 'fun' thing
to attempt and not get overly competitive... and of course
to give Rebsie a laugh :o)
Bending the backing loops to kinda fit the vocals in a 'different' way was the tricky part. Something I've not tried
so much before, so was a bit of a learning/experience for me .. which for me is what these kind of challenges are all about. [ Reply to This ]

Overall it is celtic/dance-club .. which I guess is natural
if you try to make this traditional piece with traditional
style vocals 'move' a bit more.

I interpret the text as a post battle memoriam to this
"warrior bard", who was mortally wounded in battle but
managed to bravely tear his harp apart in defiance before he
died, (so it should never fall into the oppressors hands and 'sound in slavery'. So I split the song into two main sections ..marking the change of opening in present tense and the
'back to what happened' re-collection up tempo battle
events.
ie. I interpret "in the ranks of death" as "in the ranks of
dead". [ Reply to This ]

using loops gives you ease to experiment with.
Always nice to pleasantly surprise people too, glad it was a fun listen.
I don't really know about this being a new genre it could
sit in "dance/club" I suppose .. even with the celtic/rock/
70s cop show/techno bits .. I'm never sure and if in doubt,
stick it in "Other" or "Experimental" is my wild and crazy
notion to resolve :o)

..I did spend quite some time first just working on the sound of Rebsie's vocal: tweaking with FX, compression etc and planning some variation in sound at key points and the repetition bit. It was fun to introduce Rebsie the dance diva and try to cross the slower lamenting vocal with a double-time beat/backing, to try and make the whole thing 'flow/move'. [ Reply to This ]

"From now on you shall call me .. Betty" &mdash 07/27/07 - 03:53:22 AM
Thanks. I seemed to have picked up on that haunting quality
there is in Rebsie's voice when she sings older traditional
songs - she gives a gaelic spooky touch in the softness of
her voice.
As I mentioned above, it's supposed to be quite chilling ..
with the notion that for the first 4 lines .. the Minstrel
Boy is 'dead' he is 'gone' as in 'lost to the war' already ..and he is described as he looks 'dead', still with his sword and harp on him. Then it moves to an account of the battle. This just seemed a convenient way to inflect a
slightly different interpretation musically too.

I like your choice of drums, quite a light sound . The "synths" sounds too . Maybe for an electro experimental piece the voice could be a little more in the sounds .
And the bass could go into a faster line at some point in the song .
Very cool version .

Thanks Henri &mdash 07/27/07 - 04:02:35 AM
.. I forgot to mention in the lid what I did for drums:
they are in fact 2 of the "Mowtown drummer" loops from the
GB v3 library .. but when the 'rock' guitar comes in, I
blended in/beefed up the drumming with a DoD (Drums on
Demand) loop, that made the bass drums quite interesting and
provided some cymbal crashes.
Thanks for the tips too, appreciate that. [ Reply to This ]

I knew you'd do something interesting with this and you didn't disappoint. I think the song really picks up focus in the second half, though I enjoed the opening, too. Even though this is loops, I don't actually recognize many of them, which means I have to give you my packet of chocolate minstrels. Great work. [ Reply to This ]
Thanks Lisa &mdash 07/28/07 - 04:15:09 AM
.. I think by intentially looking elsewhere than just GB v3 loop library
(I think it was 5 non- GB loops/samples I
used) and by cutting most of the major featured loops from
GB a fair bit, I got away from the backing being too easily
recognised ['comic cartoon boing' being a little exception :o).. even
though I treated that even with heavy 100% pitch adjust to key .. to make it warble even more]
- something I am well aware of as a pitfall of using loops.
The drums I used were just two patterns of 'mowtown drummer'
- not cut at all .. but instead made sound different by combining a
DoD drum loop with it when the rock guitar came in.
Glad I didn't disappoint you by taking the opportunity to
flex my 'songs using loops' practice.... taking away the
technical issue of recording real instruments and getting
your real performance 'right' I felt just left me more
time to explore musical interpretation, arrangement and
voice selection with this challenge. That was more than
enough for the time I had.
"They melt in your mouth and not in your hand", the chocolates .. er .. not the minstrel boys. ;o) [ Reply to This ]

Rebsie's voice sounds beautiful! A tad electronic at just some points. I kind of like the contrast of her lulling, sweet melody with the electronic, driving energy of the backing. Keeps my attention.

glad you could find the time to pop by for a listen,
appreciate it. Going 'club' 'techno' ish and using a fair
amount of more electronic sounding loops was something I
wanted to deliberately offset up there with (as you say)
Rebsie's sweet, yet slightly chilling - so as long as the
backing remained 'dark' and 'spooky' in some sense, I thought
they might gel .. but I appreciate my experiment might not
be for all tastes with the techno loops and TuMI synth bass - was loads of fun though. :o) [ Reply to This ]

This is marvellous! The exhuberent pulse and beat of the music matches perfectly with Rebsie's vocal... how did you manage that particular circus stunt, o master? We novices can learn so much.
Everything works so well together. I recognize some of those loops, and would never have guessed they could sound so natural with Rebsie's vocal. Who'da thunk it? The repeating of some of the vocal was a brilliant move as well; way to go, Alan. This one's a keeper. Thanks. [ Reply to This ]

.. masters (*cough splutter choke*) call it "wicka chicka" .. well at least the treblier version of "wocka chocka" that is ;o) ...I think I was attracted to the loop name instantly "70s cop show" ..I chopped it up (as with others) to be a bit different ..
Glad you enjoyed it Rik .. it does grow on you I find ..
and not like athlete's foot either. :o)
Oh, for using 139 BPM you have the mention of it in the
thread from Jim .. I didn't figure that out myself ..
just that I wanted to go for the fast double time beat under
the slower Rebsie vocal.

"stop the pigeon!" er .. holing ..:o) &mdash 07/31/07 - 08:07:34 AM
.. thinking about genre is natural when listening, as is writing to a known genre, I do that too. However, I like to experiment with blending 'sounds' also regardless of style or genre they 'usually' come from ..and then all 'does this fit in this genre' bets are off, its if the sounds work together thats important. Using loops is a great way
to experiment and find some surprising combos .. and work on
arrangement, musical interpretation of the voice etc.
I'm 'Alan' .. "Allen" is "the r.a.d.project" - (I knew that collab would confuse some).
Thanks Alf, glad you appreciate a good timpani 'boing' from
