What effects did you use? &mdash 07/23/07 - 01:40:13 AM
This sounds great

Effects &mdash 07/23/07 - 06:42:52 AM
Delays: Logic stereo delay, PSP Nitro, MFM2
Pitch shifter: ForeverForNow diatonic shifter
Reverb: Logic space designer
Rhythmic samples: cut and paste
Other: Reaktor Grainstates, SFX machine

In spite of it sounding fairly natural, this is by far the most processing I've ever done on a single track.

Victor.

Permutations &mdash 07/23/07 - 07:11:23 AM
Wow! Not only does it sound really nice, but it's fascinating to hear all the permutations on Rebsie's voice you have come up with! Very, very nicely done.

Simply brilliant - &mdash 07/23/07 - 08:08:03 AM
Excellent manipulation and rearranging. I wish I had your skill and resources to lend to my effort. You did a really great job with this - and you're right - Rebsie alone is all we need for music.

Resources &mdash 07/23/07 - 09:46:25 AM
Yeah, I guess you could accuse me (not that you're doing that) of buying an arrangement. There is a certain amount of dollars that went into all those effects.

But hey, I'm still the one wielding them!

Victor.

If you're referring to the two-part harmony, check out the Diatonic Shifter from ForeverForNow. Only $10, and it's really cool.

Btw, I didn't comment enough on your guitar soloing. For an off the cuff solo that was really good. I'm a big Jeff Beck fan. His tone is pure attitude. And skill, of course.

This is fantastic. I still have to scrape my mouth off the floor. Sounds simple, technically and creatively brilliant and very beautiful. Easily puts mine to shame. Thank you and well done, I'm still amazed. Its the kind of track I would have loved to have done.

Yes... &mdash 07/23/07 - 03:32:16 PM
... that Laurie Anderson reference was spot-on. Also reminded me a little of The Art of Noise. But what stands out is the delight you have for the original vocal and your imaginative and thoughtful take on it. I think this would be great for my music podcast show, if both Rebsie and yourself were happy for me to play it.

Wow &mdash 07/23/07 - 03:37:06 PM

focusing on the vocal was a great and novel approach Victor.. my favourite bits are the harmony section and then when you created the 'beat' part under (in keeping with the A Cappella genre/style).. the delayed parts and clever panning got a bit much for me to be honest ..bit swirling and disorientating *thud*... like the
'reversed'? bits or 'really mashed' through something
too .. breathy ..

Wouldn't have minded hearing Richard in too: doing some
bass 'boms' here and there, contrasting Rebsie... ah well .. kudos, great entry. Thanks for sharing.

Very clever arrangement &mdash 07/24/07 - 05:18:23 PM
First a tribute to the beauty and purity of Rebsie's unadulterated voice (with which I concur, absolutely), then a "round" apropos to the period, on to child-like harmonies and finally a street-corner acapella rhythm just for fun. I was always wondering, "What's going to happen next?"

[ Reply to This ]
Next.... &mdash 07/24/07 - 05:29:02 PM
After the street corner quartet came actually a granular delay effect, but that didn't really come out the way I intended it.

Thanks for listening and commenting.

You shouldn't have listened to other entries before you make your own.

Just go on and do what you were going to do. It may still turn out intreresting.

Effects? &mdash 07/25/07 - 01:22:30 PM
You may have tons of effects, but it all sounds transparent, like Rebsie is right here.

OK, now I hear the effects!

Love these early American tunes.

The polyphony is spooky, in a good way.

It's very nice to hear a total absence of MIDI-dependent instruments.

Very cool track!

Funny &mdash 07/26/07 - 02:25:01 PM
I stopped listening to the entries after two because I didnt want to be influenced by anyone. So I sat for about 8 hours in front of my comp until I came up with mine . Yours is a much better vocal take on it I love the harmonic vocal swithches great job . Go check out mine to see what im talking about . I swear I didnt hear yours until just now after posting I wanted to check out the rest . How interesting that similarities in music production happen miles apart .

Maximized Minimalism &mdash 07/29/07 - 09:27:21 AM
multiplied to a degree of singularity where a multitude becomes one. (Too much coffee for Rik, I think!)

Like others I've listened to, what seems to be an interesting experiment goes well beyond into a realm of unexpected surprises. It started out simple and straightforward, but then you take it off into a landscape of technical wizardry that blows me away - and the wonder of it is that the techno-whizzbang aspect never takes away from the simple beauty of Rebsie's voice. There's something almost Dr. Suessian about the whole thing.

Wow.

Mission accomplished &mdash 07/29/07 - 10:39:14 AM
Judging by your comments I seem to have succeeded in what I set out: use a ton of effects, and still make something that stays faithful to the source material.

Thanks for commenting!

great ideas, well implemented &mdash 07/30/07 - 10:27:26 AM
Very well constructed canon, sweet harmonizations, and cute-but-not-over-the-top sampling/stitching at the end. I like the way you build upon her voice over time. The only thing that stood out as distracting was at about 2/5ths in, you start a new section, with one of her sampled voices singing a 5th higher than normal for harmony, and that was a little much to push the pitch up, she begins to sound like a chipmunk... I liked the harmony, so maybe lowering the volume slightly, cutting off some of the high frequency to make it more like humming, and maybe adding extra reverb on that one track to make it blend more, would make it sound less prominently "weird soounding." That's the only thing that stuck out, otherwise, this was indeed a very well-thought-out arrangement. It also helps to have a really well-sung sample to go from (Kudos Rebsie!)... her singing layered upon itself really sweetly, which means she was hitting those notes very nicely. What a great piece you've created here, really crisp recording, even when the voices get thick!
ttfn,
Drakonis

Chipmunk &mdash 07/30/07 - 11:43:20 AM
thanks for your thoughtful reply.

Yes, I'm aware of the chipmunk effect. The shift was only by a third, but still it was quite noticeable. I tried shifting the formant with EVOC20, but it didn't really help. And I don't have Melodyne, which could have done this without problems. So I left it like this. The volume is already turned down, but maybe a bit more would have improved it.

Thanks for listening and commenting. When is your version going up?

Despite a tad of unnatural vocal tone, it's amazing the pitch shift worked so well. Nothing I've got would shift it so cleanly without a serious 'warble' in the results. The delay works well too, I think, and I like the 'voice for instrument' tactic you used - quite creative there....
