Description:
Something different... although as you listen you’ll say same ol same ol.... here’s the different part... my G5 in my studio gave up the ghost... but I back up everything so I brought my files into my office and installed Logic, where I proceeded to mix with my sound sticks... low and behold, I think my office is a better place to mix... so the question is... why do I have those mackie monitors... I can definitely hear better in here, than in the studio... my studio lies to me...
This song was not on my radar at all... It’s about a decade old... and the other night I walked into my office to find my wife sitting and listening to my MJ page... she was a little miffed because she had never heard “Perfect Storm” before... I was just happy that she was genuinely interested... off the cuff she brought up “walk strong” and mentioned that it was one of her fav’s, and that I had never recorded it... that was all I needed... in the middle of the session my computer died... so I left the song with just guitar and 1 vocal for now... took my audio files off my lacie and finished it in my office...
I have only ever played this for friends and I didn’t realize that it was over 7 1/2 minutes long... so I trimmed as much as I could... it used to end with three choruses in a row getting stronger and stronger so that by the end it feels real up and positive... this edit leaves the song feeling quite a bit different, but even as it sits it is still too long
Lyrics:
HE LOST A GREAT JOB THEY SAY
NOW HE HOLDS TWO
HIS CHILDREN AND WIFE MUST PAY
THESE BILLS COME DUE
REMEMBERING GOLDEN DAYS
WERE THEY TOO FEW
BEFORE SPARROWS FELL TO PREY
THEY SAY GOD KNEW
WALK STRONG ONE MORE DAY
WE’RE NOT FAR AWAY
WHEN WE’RE HOME WE MAY SMILE
THIS WILL FADE AWAY
I CAN HEAR HIM SAY
WALK STRONG FOR ONE MORE MILE
HE WAS OUR FOOTBALL STAR
HE FELL TOO SOON
HIS ACCIDENT LEFT ONE SCAR
HIS LEGS DON’T MOVE
EACH AUTUMN IS A BITTER PILL
HIS LIFE FEELS SMALL
HE ROLLS TO THE WINDOW SILL
TO WATCH LEAVES FALL
WALK STRONG ONE MORE DAY
WE’RE NOT FAR AWAY
WHEN WE’RE HOME WE MAY SMILE
THIS WILL FADE AWAY
I CAN HEAR HIM SAY
WALK STRONG FOR ONE MORE MILE
PLEASE WALK STRONG
PLEASE WALK STRONG
WALK STRONG
SHE SITS BY HIS CRIB ALL NIGHT
AND PRAYS HE’LL SLEEP
SHE KNOWS HE WILL LOSE THIS FIGHT
THIS CHILD SO SWEET
SHE WORKS TILL THE SUN GOES DOWN
SHE CAN NOT EAT
IF SHE COULD JUST TRADE HER STRENGTH
W/ THIS CHILD SO WEAK
WALK STRONG ONE MORE DAY
WE’RE NOT FAR AWAY
WHEN WE’RE HOME WE MAY SMILE
THIS WILL FADE AWAY
I CAN HEAR HIM SAY
WALK STRONG FOR ONE MORE MILE

why this is one of your wife's favorite. Very moving and emotive. You are imho one of the most prolifc lyricists and singers on the site. This song just talks from the heart and the dymamics sound awesome. Long live the office studio.

wow John &mdash 07/23/07 - 04:20:49 PM
those comments felt good... but you don't see how many takes I will do just to get something passable.. I usually lose my voice before a song is done.. I'm more persistant than talented...
this is seriously wide open for a string arrangement [ Reply to This ]
Ha ha! Wives know...don't they? &mdash 07/23/07 - 03:51:38 PM
What a coincidence. We have each posted a LONG tune for our wives. Interesting...
A powerful and moving tale, this . I'm with the misses on this one bro. I can't imagine why you never recorded it before! Fabulous sound on that acoustic guitar. Vocal delivery is clear and persuasive. Although the approach is minamilist in comparason with a lot of your other tunes this simple and straightforward piece is among your best to these ol' ears!
Well done bro! [ Reply to This ]
Hi Michael &mdash 07/23/07 - 04:25:08 PM
thanx friend... the "approach is minamilist" mostly because I lost my studio in the middle...there are vocals left out... but I was enjoying mixing in a new environment.. or as much as I could while passing a watermelon through my urinary track...
you're right this one just wasn't on my radar [ Reply to This ]
Powerful &mdash 07/23/07 - 04:04:09 PM
This song is powerful and beautiful... I'm stunned right now; that's how much it moved me. Actually, I shed a tear or two while listening. Yours is probably my favorite voice at MacJams; if I could sing, I'd love to be able to sing like you. That said, my one concern in this particular recording is that I'm not sure, but is it possible that you're not as good voice as you usually are for this recording? I feel terrible even suggesting such a thing! And I will quickly add that I'm not listening through headphones, so I could be completely wrong about this! But it somehow seems just slightly less clear, resonant, full, or something like that, than usual... maybe?
But the main thing I want to say is you've got yourself another fantastic, hugely powerful song here Scott, and I was deeply moved by it. [ Reply to This ]
True story &mdash 07/23/07 - 04:10:52 PM
I've been passing a stone for over 8 days... it moves in about 2 or 3 hour increments.. leaving me exausted... I did this once before years ago, and the whole thing went at once... 32 hours... but at least it was over... anyway, I can't lay down or stand up so I end up sitting at the computer... i racked up quite a fw point last week... I would redo several of the vocals, but my studio is down...
good ears Clark... you've always been a most impressive friend

more on this subject &mdash 07/23/07 - 05:34:54 PM
I always find my voice lacking... it's one of the reasons that I often do vocal arrangements ... this hides flaws... the nature of this song will really leave the vocal exposed.... so I was hearing my vox as a little strained... so i doubled the track and panned to the right... i removed all the frequencies above 800 and put a delay with a long reverb... but i pulled this just below where it is audible... in the hopes that it will thicken my thin sounding voice... I wonder if this is why it doesn't sound present to you... [ Reply to This ]

On this one I strung my guitar with heavier strings, just for the recording... I remove them when I'm done... but for that time it give the guitar that little extra sound...

Scott, I feel your heart in every beautiful song you've brought here.
Such a wonderful experience listening to your music, and this is no exception.
Same ol same ol? Same deeply moving gorgeous high-level music... I wouldn't worry about that too much, Scott. Just keep writing and recording. You are quite gifted, as I've said before

Hi Tom &mdash 07/23/07 - 06:32:23 PM
I learned awhile back that art of recording is not just documenting the song... if I play a song several times each performance will have it's own vibe... the trick is to be open to the spontainious when the red lighht is on...
I've always called it "capturing the moment"

Lovely and powerful! &mdash 07/23/07 - 07:03:17 PM
A day for sad songs! It seems to me that the older we become, the more stories like these we collect from personal experience. You have a voice that seems familiar to me from pre MJ days, and you consistently use it so well. Really good songwriting and a really restrained production - I could hear all sorts of development (as I'm sure you could), especially vocally (harmonies) as the song proceeded, but I think you've made it even stronger by keeping to the path you've chosen. The strength of the song is in the lyrics and your excellent vocals.

Now that I have put the kleenex down, and thanked God for my many blessings, including healthy children...I have to say, WOW!! Once again, I am totally blown away by our magic music. This is such a sweet, peaceful and thoughtful tune. We never know what life holds for us, but what a pleasant reminder that each day brings new light and new hope. I love it. You are so gifted and I, as well as many others, consider myself fortunate to be able to share the joy in listening to your heart felt music. Seriously. I am so glad I came to MacJams. sometimes there is power in simplicity. But then again your one of those that can do it very effectively.
A great story you tell in this song as well. In my opinion I don't know if it should be developed any farther......Well except a marching band at the end. [ Reply to This ]

You have a way to really touch a certain emotional spot with those lyrics you write. You have your own special vocal sound also; and when you sing, it does the same thing. You leave me with a lump in my throat with these songs. I'm D.loading this to go with your 'Be a Man', which I often play and choke up to LOL. Great guitar too, Thanks for this, M [ Reply to This ]

thanx so much... I went to listen to "then the rain" yesterday... i was going to drop you a note, but I didn't want it to come across as pimping... so I was going to wait until this song ran it's course... but that song sets a real benchmark for me...

...and it's with more than one gift...
Your writing is always solid, Scott... You have a lovely feel for melody and for harmony, the latter coming out nicely in the guitar arrangement...
With a better computer situation and a better kidney situation, I can imagine this with harmonies on that chorus...
Lyrically, this takes its time and breaks my heart...

shucks thanx... all of these situations turned out better than the song would suggest... but to watch folks you know go through it is still heart breaking... We're all going to walk through fire at some point... I guess important point here is, HOW we walk... again these folks passed the test...

thanx for that... when you read lyrics of the songs that you love... you'll usually find that the first few lines are a springboard for the whole idea/main thrust of the song... and I couldn't get that line "these bills come due" out of my head.. It was the line that emerged early on in the writing...

Once again your lyrics are superb. Your words possess the capacity to paint a line directly from my head to my heart. Pure poetry. You managed to tackle a sad subject without being sappy and overbearing. Loved the uplifting, optimistic "Walk srong" message. Perfectly crafted.
Your voice wraps around the textured lyrics and lovely guitar like a smokey embrace. When the song comes to an end I want to say "Awwww..tell me another story.... sing me another song"..... [ Reply to This ]
