Keywords:
Roxylee (26)folk (353)love (942)vocal (145)harmony (53)break out (1)
Description:
This song is about people I’ve loved in my lifetime who have missed out on having a deep, meaningful relationship because of fear of being known. Many thanks to Drak for his taking time to listen, and for his audio editing tips. :-)

I played the guitar into 3 tracks, in 3 different keys, and added a bit of GB strings for effect.

Lyrics:
I’ve been dismissed, diminished,
One too many times
I’ve lost the waning hope
You’d be a friend of mine
Each time I asked for honesty
Your pride just slammed the door
You refuse to look at you,
So I won’t anymore

You’ve cultivated thorns around your castle
Women change your life
You don’t need that hassle
How do you feel when you wake up
And there’s no one to talk to
One- sided conversation
Must be enough for you

Break out of your fear
What do you think they want to take from you
Life is meant for living, loving, yes, and giving
I didn’t want your money- I wanted you
If only you could trust, you’d know the truth

You close your heart to love
I know you get lonely
With your ducks all in a row
It’s your structure only
The people who get close enough
Are dismissed summarily
No one gets to know you, except superficially

We can talk about our daily plans
Discuss the weather
Things that lift you up or give you pleasure
But when I asked you to be real
You’d turn your back and run
Waiting for that shoe to drop wasn’t any fun

Break out of your fear
Or do you want to stay there in that place
Life is meant for living, loving, yes, and giving
Giving from the heart might make a dent
You don’t like sacrifice, that’s why you went

I truly wish you happiness
And peace of mind
I’d try to reach you still,
But I won’t waste more time
You’ve made you choice, it’s clear
And now I’m making mine
I’m off to finding friends who
Love and let it shine

I pray you let your anger
And your fear subside
I pray you open up your heart
Stop trying to hide
Perhaps one day you will let go
And let somebody in
What matters now is where you go
Not where you’ve been

Break out, break out of fear
What do you think they want to take from you
Life is meant for living, loving, yes, and giving
Break on out into a better way
There’s really nothing more I want to say

Brilliant! &mdash 07/23/07 - 03:58:35 PM
This is easily the finest work you've done to date Sis! Nice chord progression and guitar playing in general. Insightful lyrics. Strong vocal delivery along with beautiful harmonies. Effective minamalist use of background strings. WOW...I could listen to a whole album of this stuff. Keep em coming!

Be well!

The poet in you come out... I love the line... "You cultivated thorns"... this kind of writing always works so well for me... painting with words.... and I almost forgot how well you sing parts and harmonies... I think you could join Sisters if they ever take to the road

excellent job Sis

MUCH BETTER! You put that extra oomph into singing the lyrics/story, and this really does it (and you re-did that fast)! I loved the backing music, and the singing and harmonies in the chorus... really sweet songwriting here. Sounds like you boosted the overall volume too. Boy that Saffire and mic really sound clean, definitely put your vocals up front where they belong. One question... you did not list the guitar? Was that real or was that Memorex (I mean, did you play that or was it GB instrument?) It sounded really good. I'm so happy you are getting a chance to share your talent... and I wish I could sing like that... uh, I mean I wish I could sing that well... if I sang like that, people would stare :-)

we will get you to sing something with your dulcimer. :-) Thank you for your mixing skills. Oh- yeh, the guitar- it's my 1968 Gibson Blue Ridgee acoustic.
Left, key of D. middle, key of A, right, key of G. I was trying to get the sound of a 12 string. Thank you for introducing me to Garageband and MacJams. This is where I wrote my first song and where i now get to sing with great musicians and friends. :-)

Nice melody, great vocal performance, clean production, I think you don't need many instruments to make a good tune. Bravo...

Sing it out loud! &mdash 07/24/07 - 06:24:14 AM
This is an impressive song. Your lyrics have an easy flow, but that ease is deceptive. It takes skill to make it seem so natural.

You clearly have a story to telll here, and for that the vocal needs to be up front. With lesser singers it could be painful hearing the vocals thus exposed, but your voice sounds wonderful here.

Stellar stuff all around.

Thank you, Vic &mdash 07/24/07 - 09:51:53 AM
It was a long process... I wote it quickly, then kept changing the phrasing, sleeping on it, changing a word here and there until it felt right. Then I had to sing it enough to practically memorize it so it wouldn't sound like i was reading it. This is the tricky part for me- not getting tired of singing it before it gets posted. I am glad the emotions weren't dampened. Thank you for stopping by and leaving such a nice comment. :-)

Break-out &mdash 07/24/07 - 11:03:22 AM
Nicely imagined, and nicely sung.

At first, I thoguht this was a nice companion piece to your previous post (the war letters) ... in that my first interpretation was you were writing about a wife and soldier-husband who are trying to work through the repercussions of a war's post-trauma. But as I listened more closely I realized that wasn't actually the idea behind the lyrics - that you were going for a more general take on relationships.

I especially love the ending, where you say you've said what you wanted to say ... and it ends. That's a very nice touch.

War, etc. &mdash 07/24/07 - 12:43:49 PM
Yeh, this one has nothing to do with the war couple who, unfortunately, didn't make it out alive. This one is about people who could have a vital relationship if they'd only let go of past hurts and fears. Thank you for your nice comments. Thank you for mentioning the last two lines, which I had changed about 5 times before deciding which one was best. :-)

You know.. &mdash 07/26/07 - 01:46:32 AM
This one gets me thinkin about myself as being a man.
You know, while it is very easy to believe I am a very open person that doesn't have much problem being close, it is at the same time, on some level, easy to recognize every line in your song. Like if is was writtten to me, or to ONE of many aspects of me .. like as it goes into the package of being a man ..?.. at least in the western culture ..?.. don't know .. would be nice to have other mens reactions to your song.
Guess it raises questions that most of us most of all would rather want to pass by though.

Thinking... &mdash 07/26/07 - 07:01:37 AM
Hi, Johannes. :-) You are very honest to admit that you can identify with the lines of this song. I think all of us have been afraid to trust after being hurt. The problem comes when we get stuck there and refuseto really open up to anyone else. I don't know if it's a Western thing, either, but people will say they desire a deep, meaningful relationship- er...as long as it's only skin deep. A little honesty would prevent a lot of broken hearts. I'm glad this one made you think. You know, I think if we all would truly forgive the ones who betrayed us early on, we'd be able to trust a lot more now. That's my theory, anyhow. Thank you for listening and for your honest comments. :-)

This is the first song I clicked on after waking up this morning. I normally would not be all that focused at this time, but really your song got me all in attention and suddenly transfixed on the beautiful sound emanating from my speakers. Quite refereshing and inspiring... just the kind of music I needed and wanted to hear to get my spirits going for the day. Bravo! Your lyrics and voice are full of emotion and your understated guitar playing just gives it the right amount of musical boost to make those emotions soar.

It took me a while to find this but it was worth waiting! The differnt guitar tracks blend beautifully with the strings section. The vocal melody is superb and really brings out the lyrics. The song reminds me of a late 60's vibe which is where I like to be. The backing vocal works really well too.
Best wishes
