Description:
A medley of Richard Schletty's vocal for Minstrel Boy and my own "traditional" tune. I bang out the drums on my clav. I hope you enjoy this more traditional treatment of the song.

In response to Feter and others I lowered the "higher" of the two fife voices. The Minstrel melody and the "lower" of my two lines are left up where they were because they sound more flute and less fife (or piccolo the fife's modern descendent) an octave down. Let me know if you like this one better.

It just goes &mdash 07/24/07 - 03:00:39 PM
on and on. Yet another fantastic version. Very authentic sounding and clever.

It's great to have so much attention and creativity lavished upon my barebones vox track. This is a better mix than the original -- an easier listen with the pipes pitched down. The timing is pretty much right on. Cool that. Simple and effective. The song rides a nice thread all the way through.

I couldn't have put this one together without your vox and input. Glad you like the final product.

So, what is it like being a singing sensation? ;)

That is a great modern take on traditional esp. with the flute. It flows very well and is very easy listening. Great version.

Yep, this works &mdash 07/25/07 - 04:44:46 PM
Suits the voice so well.

Just needs a deep distorted guitar! ;-)

Seriously, this is really well done. Beautiful clean mix and great drums.

Cheers

Fantastic Fifes &mdash 07/26/07 - 01:34:52 PM
This might be my most favorite version using Richard's vocals. Your simple and clean approach is crispy and so delightful.

I love it!

Thanks!

Fifes forever! Thanks. Richard's vocal cuts to the heart of the old song.

Yes, &mdash 07/28/07 - 05:03:53 PM
it would have been a bit strange if nobody had made this kind a version, I guess. Very nice!

One question only: Was it out of the question to keep the (some) fife beneath the singing? I noticed myself being a bit surprised when it went away, but I suppose it is as it should be!?

Thanks for sharing!

I could have kept the fife going. It would have taken two different versions to match the two verses well enough, plus the fife seemed to distract from the voice. My wife suggested a trumpet (or bugle) behind the voice would be better, but I do not have access to a good trumpet voice. Perhaps Bass2x could have played the melody on his horn along with the voice.

Nice Drums! &mdash 07/29/07 - 07:22:27 PM
Doing a spare arrangement like this can really bring out the best of the instruments, if they're done well - and these sound great. The fifes are crisp while the drumming makes me want to go march drill around a parade square. This stuff really resonates in the bone, doesn't it?

Love your work!

Marching along :) I'm not much of a many layers musician, most of the time. Glad you liked this one.

I agree that this is a good setting for the counter melody. I actually think this is better than the original song I used the fifes for. Richard's vocal gives better context for the fifes than the fifes on their own.
