Keywords:
Minstrel (4)Boy (17)March (18)ethereal (29)
Description:
This is my humble response to MJ's Vocal Game (V4C01). My first time doing one of these. It was fun and challenging.
(Artwork by Patry Denton)

Lyrics:
The minstrel boy to the war is gone,
In the ranks of death you'll find him;
His father's sword he hath girded on,
And his wild harp slung behind him;
"Land of Song!" cried the warrior bard,
"Tho' all the world betrays thee,
One sword, at least, thy right shall guard,
One faithful harp shall praise thee!"

The Minstrel fell! But the foeman's chain
Could not bring that proud soul under;
The harp he lov'd ne'er spoke again,
For he tore its chords asunder;
And said "No chains shall sully thee,
Thou soul of love and brav'ry!
Thy songs were made for the pure and free
They shall never sound in slavery!

Very understated &mdash 07/24/07 - 04:39:29 PM
I love the opening with that dub bass, as well as the processing on the vocals. Very well done.

Eh, just when I was nodding off those trumpets came in....

Switching back to the very minimal vocal part was cool. For a moment I thought you would continue with a bombastic background. Which I wouldn't have liked at all. This way the violence is actually subtle. In its own way.

Excellent work, and nice artwork.

Just as I was nodding off.... &mdash 07/24/07 - 04:58:09 PM
LOL! The trumpets are my middle-eight alarm clock!

Thanks a bunch. It was a gas to do this. Forced me to sit down and get to work.

Thanks Len &mdash 07/24/07 - 05:38:50 PM
Obviously I'm not the only one who used that loop, but it really seems to fit the song. I think I only hacked the vocals at one or two points to make it fit bette. Probably could have used one more.

I too .. &mdash 07/24/07 - 05:36:07 PM

like the attention to 'treating' Rebsie's vocal ..love
the fanfare! hmm but seemed to be a bit of an anti-climax
.. when things dropped back down .. it was going up, up
up, up and away!!!

Very cool... rubba dub dub.

Aha! &mdash 07/24/07 - 05:52:28 PM
"Fanfare" - thank you, that's the word I was looking for. Yeah, the problem as I saw it was what to do with that big empty space in the middle? I may have over-done it. I had to draw it back because Rebsie's delicate voice would have been trampled by all that brass.

But I could get philosophical (in my defense) and say that war is often accompanied by fanfare which usually fades before it's all over!

am jealous of your production skills. that sounds great, really like what you did to the vocals.

That's very kind... &mdash 07/24/07 - 05:59:05 PM
...but all the kudos should go to Garagebands and the crystal clean recording of Rebsie's beautiful voice. Makes it easy to sound good.

Now, if I could just get my guitar songs to sound that good...

Thanks again.

Nice groove &mdash 07/24/07 - 06:22:49 PM
Drum and bass are a good match to Rebsie's vocal.

Thanks

Thanks Bill &mdash 07/24/07 - 10:01:18 PM
....you know, before I started this piece, I didin't know you could super-impose a loop over a different instrument. GB just treats it like a sequencer. The possibilities are staggering.

Thanks again.

I ADORE the middle part with brasses and all orchestra! And I would go even bigger. It seems to me little bit cut off, too prematurely. At one second I felt hit by a tsunami of sound but a few sec later I was completely dry again. I loved to be overwhelmed by that big, full, rich, warm and colourful sound of many instruments. It makes it so different from others versions of this song (which are brilliant as well, i heard them all). Great work, like it very much.

I could go for the easy joke here (you set me up so well it's difficult to resist), but I'm just going to say thanks and I'll try to keep it up longer next time.

It's it warm in here?

THE TRUMPETS!! &mdash 07/24/07 - 09:41:20 PM
You should really give the trumpets their own song, or I will!! hahaha, but those trumpets are cool!
Nice composition though :)

The brass is a hit &mdash 07/24/07 - 09:56:29 PM
I think there's a real hunger for brass out there. I'm partial to it as well.

I'm working on another piece that has a three part brass section throughout. But when you commit to having horns, man, there's a lot of arranging to do.

I'll probably think twice before doing it again!

Thanks

I can honestly say that if I had heard this &mdash 07/24/07 - 09:52:01 PM
before I did my version I might have thrown in the towel. Great work and good imagination. The vocal processing is wonderful and your rhythm bed is very cool.

Quite a nice envelope of sound around Rebsie's whispering voice. Cool. The trumpets really brought the sound forward, then you settled it back into a funky mist.

Thanks a lot Richard &mdash 07/25/07 - 09:34:24 PM
...for the compliment and for providing such fine vocal trachs for this very cool exercise.

There's a lot of love in this little corner of the net - and coming from such talented people it's humbling.

I'll try not to let it go to my head!

Contrast &mdash 07/26/07 - 04:13:59 PM

You created a nice difference between the bass / drums color and the voice , energy with some sadness . Enjoyed the fanfare too .

Big Big Trumpets &mdash 07/29/07 - 07:52:17 PM
You just can't go wrong with a big wave of trumpets! That's not to say there's not a lot of other nifty stuff going on here; your treatment of the vocals is clever and varied, and that bass line is hypnotic.

But those trumpets... man, it's like a superhero coming through a brick wall!

Superhero &mdash 07/30/07 - 01:04:33 PM
Rik is right. It's a superhero busting through the wall to save the day kind of horn!

Very nice.
