i gotta get me an e-bow....what a trippy sound! these songs just get better and better... rebsie and rich are gonna have quite a resume when all is said and done. each should have an album's worth of material on only one lyric. the end of this tune is simply gorgeous... [ Reply to This ]

Atmospheric Bagpipes &mdash 07/25/07 - 01:35:12 PM
I get a real different feeling from this one. Your guitar sounds create such an authentic ancient feel to this little ditty. The drums at the end are an effective contribution to the overall sound. I'm glad you saved them for the ending.
That lead guitar of yours.... this is about the third time I heard one of your leads and sat up straight in my chair with a foolish face on!
Are those your back up vocals? I was wondering if anyone else sang along with their featured singer. I thought about it, but didn't dare!
This is beautiful stuff Dick. [ Reply to This ]
Not my vocals &mdash 07/25/07 - 04:20:30 PM
They're Rebsie's put through the GB "female to male" processor. Others have the "deep voice" effect added.
I heard Rebsie's voice and saw a Scottish hillside and tried to get that sort of feeling (if you know what I mean)
I wanted the vocals to be clear at first like the clarity there is before a battle then gradually get less and less distinct as the battle progressed.
The drums were left until the end becuase I couldn't sync them earlier ;-)
Many thanks for the comments about the guitar.
Much appreciated

"Female To Male" &mdash 07/28/07 - 08:11:10 PM
Isn't that a Monggzsongg? (cjdaley)
Thanks for sharing your techniques and your ideas. I hear Rebsie on the hillside, fer sure.
As far as your guitar playing goes, call me crazy, but I think you're really a 25 year old guitar god that was trapped in a podgy middle aged body by an evil witch.
It's just an observation, nothing personal.

Your setting for Rebsie's vocal accents and accentuates while keeping her part clean and clear. Then that ending....:) Excellent version.

You mean that's a guitar? &mdash 07/25/07 - 07:17:47 PM
It sounded like an additive synth I have. Fascinating. Those are some serious effects you must've thrown over the sound.
I like the beatless interpretation of your version. The voice is just floating over that bed of sound. Nifty. (The ending, beats and all, is cool too.)

Yep guitars &mdash 07/27/07 - 02:11:13 AM
except for a AMG Mini-moog for an extreme bass at the end.
The Boss GT8 is a stupendous unit allowing an amazing amount of control over the sound. My favourite is assigning the pitch shifter to the pedal giving those kind of "bagpipe effects". This song used 6 guitar tracks that had various effects added. Flange, chorus, distortion, etc. and shedloads of reverb. The ebow then lets me play a drone. I've not found much use for the ebow since I bought it so it's nice to have something like this to justify the purchase :-)
Thanks Vic

Ghosts work for me &mdash 07/27/07 - 02:28:59 AM
See the "haunting" above :-) As I said earlier, Rebsie's voice created images of windswept Scottish hillsides then that leads on to lost souls of soldiers wandering the glens.
Thanks for listening.

Vocal transformer in GB &mdash 07/27/07 - 02:45:17 AM
"female to male" - works well with such a pure voice where the diction is good and is relatively slow.
Hmmm......... the ebow is getting far attention that I thought. I'll have to re-assess its usefulness ;-)
Thanks for your comments.

I was really pleasantly surprised, hearing the ebow. And I'm also happy to see that others are familiar with it, too. I've been considering using mine for a new tune I'm working on.
Like I said: you play it very well.

GT-8 .. I have the earlier ME-5, cool. I used a GT-8 once
live doing a cover of No Doubt's "I'm just a girl".
Love the lead guitar work .. I would have had it and
the back-beat featuring earlier like from the start ..
intro. The expressiveness in the guitar to the song/
subject matter is what makes this one special to me.
Kudos.

I think the ebow has fallen out of fashion so maybe it needs a bit of a boost ;-)
Thanks for the "guitar" comments.
My idea was to let the sound get messier and messier and messier as the song progressed to reflect a battle. That's one reason why the beats and guitar don't appear until the end. I did want the beats in a little earlier but couldn't sync them up.

The most interesting part to me.... &mdash 07/28/07 - 01:22:14 PM

I can see Rebsie on the hillside, but I don't think it's on Earth. This reminds me of my fav sci-fi show Babylon 5, and the amazing music that Christopher Franke painted that show with. Absolutely amazing!

Well... &mdash 08/19/07 - 02:56:57 PM
I've heard a few versions of this now and I've been mightily impressed. My previous favourite was probably VicDiesel's. Sorry, Vic, but you've just lost top spot to Dick... ooh, that sorta rhymed. Anyway, really loving everything you've done to this. Great use of sounds throughout. I thought I might find the female to male thing a bit creepy, in a bad way, but it's more creepy in a good way. Atmospheric would probably be a better word for it, I guess. And the guitar solo at the end was just the icing on the cake. Sorted! And can I play this on my podcast show? I already have Vic's lined up for one show but I can put this version on a later one, if you're agreeable... [ Reply to This ]
