Very Cool... &mdash 07/26/07 - 06:05:47 AM
this version of your song and with great work by all contributers. Leon's vocals are as always fantastic and bring a real 'freshness' to whatever he sings. The new arrangement too lends itself to the extra verses, though as I said previously, the originall tune you brought to MJ's stands on its own. It just gave us all a great soundboard (as opposed to 'Sounbed' LOL) to bounce off, but congrats to all on this excellent job, M [ Reply to This ]

Once again... &mdash 07/26/07 - 07:26:18 AM
I end up listening to a MacJams song that really isn't, stylistically, what I'd normally be drawn to... And really hearing the coolness in the elements that are here...
I love the bassline, for starters. I have been "hearing" bass lines lately, for some reason, and I like the way this one holds down the groove while also being light-fingered where that is called for...
And the sound bed once again has that ktb touch in that it sets things up for other people and other parts of the song to rise up and shine... I don't know if everyone who listens to karma's collabs hears the skill he has for being the musical 'glue' wherever he goes to work...As arranger, as keyboard guy, as whatever his function is in the moment...
The Leon lead vocal is really solid. I don't think I've ever tuned in to what a voice Leon has... and this tune seems to give him pretty of space to stretch out, and he does without sounding like he's just going for particular notes to show off... Plus, he had to think of a whole lot of words that end in "-al"...
The guitar playing has the proper degree of fire... On my headphones, this is the one element where I find myself wondering whether it sits right in the mix all the time... Sometimes I want it a little more forward...sometimes a little bit back... sometimes I wish it was a little less "wide" or little bit less 'Ernie Isley'... but I want to emphasize that I am talking just about the mix here... The playing is tight...
Reminds me of that song where Jeff Beck collab'd with Seal...
Nice work, guys... [ Reply to This ]
glue &mdash 07/26/07 - 09:29:50 PM
Ed, I take that as the highest compliment, A former bandmate likened my contributions to the group as corn starch for the sauce. Sure, he had been drinking heavily but I still took it as high praise ;-)
I like the glue analogy much better! [ Reply to This ]

Thanks for the praise. &mdash 07/28/07 - 02:16:26 PM
It was quite fun looking for the right lyrics that would go well with the theme of the song...
Some words ending in "-al" that did not make the cut: gestational, perineal, scatological, pathological... Ha-ha. I did not want it to sound like it was written by Sarah Silverman.

How I got involved... &mdash 07/26/07 - 12:19:40 PM
I promised John to sing on one of his songs like eons ago and never got the time and inspiration to work on it... until this song came along. He emailed me to give it a listen, and I read a few other comments in his original post which brought up my name as a possible good vocal match for this music (Hey, thanks, echoroom!). Style-wise and vocally, it was challenging because I never sang or composed jazz or rock-jazz prior to this. Thanks to John for his persistence and confidence in me. Thanks a lot, too, to Glenn for his splendid guitar work that really transformed the song and brought it to a whole new level with his rock-jazz arrangement. It was easy and quite pleasant and fulfilling to work with these extremely talented yet very humble guys. [ Reply to This ]

Impressive! &mdash 07/26/07 - 07:52:10 PM
The original soundbed was really good, but this has gone somewhere altogether different, and, dare I say, better. Leon's powerful (and just plain GOOD) vocals lift this so much, and the production is awesome. Some excellent guitar from Glenn (although I agree with Ed about it maybe needing to be a bit better placed in the mix) ........... and the backing still sounds amazing.
Very good post guys!

I have to say I am really beaming over being a part of this colab. Everyone is right. Karma was the initial inspiration for this and the quality of his soundbed just made it easy to right music to. His playing is soooo good. And what can I say about Leon? Great vocals and lyrics not to mention some really great input on the mix of the song as a whole. This is quite frankly the most fun I've had in a long time. I hope I can do so many more of these colabs. Thanks Karma & Leon!!! [ Reply to This ]
Wow &mdash 07/28/07 - 03:06:03 AM
Wow, I am just impressed over what you guys are doing. Like Ejh this is not my normal genre but I just can't stop listening.
On one level this song is quite energetic and lively, at the same time it is on another level very cool. That builds a depth into the song that catches me.
Then of course there are these great individual performances, not leaving great teamwork out.
Finally for some reason - and like Ejh again - one of the first things that caught me was the bass. If I ever had a band I would love to have a bass player like this! So cool and hot at the same time. [ Reply to This ]
bass &mdash 07/28/07 - 05:59:57 PM
Thx to you and Ed for paying such nice compliments re: the bass. It's midi, but it was one of my favorite parts of the original jam. When i listened to a mix with no bass it just lay there, Hector has agreed to play the real deal when we go into the studio :-) [ Reply to This ]

killer is the word.. I've determined that I will only spead sunshine where it is warrented... so shine on this post... this has your signature aural beauty John... what you bring to the table is so consistantly excellent... Leon your vocals are passionate and strong... and they soar above the song... the first notes draw me in... the impressionistic lyric reminds me of Yes .... an all time fav... you leave it open to interpretation... then the frosting(guitars)... is dead on.. right on the money...

A number of peopel have said this isn't what they would normally listen to ... i'd agree, but for me, leon's vocals always transcend genre, and I could happily listen to him singing the phone directory (which he'd do with great warmth and passion).
A cool tune, which for some reason reminds me of the theme from 'moonlighting'. Nice guitar work, and the whole soundbed supports Mr. L's vocals superbly, letting thm soar into the night.

it's WONderful, guys! i remember this sans vocal, and it was pretty fine then, but leon infuses it with an energy that lights up my world. john - your keys are such a great foundation for anything to sit on. your work has an innate classiness that never disappoints. the snazzy guitar work and beautiful mix make for one helluva musical dish. love it! anne [ Reply to This ]

As sweet as it already was, Leon's addition melds so beautifully w/ this.
I don't remeber there being a guitar on this - wasn't this originally submitted while asking for a little collabn' efforts - That g'tar is REALLY nice - Can't believe I don't remember saying something about it - Maybe this'd be a good time to read yer liner notes, John...
Hehe... Okay, big stupid here has read the your notes and I may be a tad on the stupid side, but not crazy. Okay...
In any event, I know that I hadn't felt that it needed anything to be complete, but the added goodies just pushes this way over the top for me.

The vocal reminds me of Al Green from the early 70s.
Very effective drum groove.
Guitar work is beautiful. Reminds of stuff by Boston, from late 1970s.
Keyboard is not too prominent on this track, but I do hear a solid bed of keyboard action, under the flashy stuff. [ Reply to This ]
