Keywords:
lullaby (47)traditional (65)irish (40)mythology (9)
Description:
This is an old irish song, which captured my heart, when I heard it the first time few months ago. The only informations i found about it go like that:

The song was first published in 1904 in "The Songs of Uladh [Ulster]" by Herbert Hughes and Joseph Campbell. Both were from Belfast, Hughes being a Protestant (Methodist) and Campbell a Catholic. Hughes collected the trad melody in Donegal the previous year, and Campbell wrote the lyrics. (comment by Alice Flynn)

This Irish lullaby comes from Gartan, the birth place of the famed Columba, founder of the Benedictine monastery on Iona. Today, Iona remains one of the most revered pilgrimage and retreat centers in the world.

Aoibheall - (EE-val) Meaning: the name of the queen of the northern fairies
leanbhan - (LYAN-uh-van) Meaning: little child, baby
Siabra - (SHEE-vra) a prankster class of trooping fairies, also spelled Shefro or Siofra.

ceilidh: voices
ferdasek: bass guitar, electric guitar, patience

I would love to thank very much to my dear amorzinho Ferdasek, who helped me so much with this song, recording all the guitars etc. I am so very much happy we made it until the end. It took a long to finish it, but I am so glad we did it. Thank you my love :)

I would love to devote this little song to my beloved granny, who passed away two days ago and who I miss dearly. Mam te moc rada moje babicko. Moc. tvoje Pavlinka

Lyrics:
Sleep O babe, for the red bee hums the silent twilight's fall,
Aoibheall from the grey rock comes, to wrap the world in thrall.
A leanbhan O, my child, my joy, my love my heart's desire,
The crickets sing you lullaby, beside the dying fire.

Dusk is drawn and the Green Man's thorn is wreathed in rings of fog,
Siabhra sails his boat till morn, upon the Starry Bog.
A leanbhan O, the paly moon hath brimmed her cusp in dew,
And weeps to hear the sad sleep-tune, I sing O love to you.

This is delicate, soothing, and sweet. Ferdasek did a great job playing the guitar/bass, and your singing is very rich and enjoyable. I can see why this melody is a favorite of yours, and you present it here very nicely. Although the jangly electric guitar is a little bright, and would wake the baby (I would have chosen an acoustic for a "lullaby"), you have created a lovely song. Great work you two!

i'm so glad you like it :) i have to say, that the electric guitar was chosen on a purpose. i wanted the sound to be a bit different, then what is the usual sound of a lullaby. actually my idea at the beginning was to make it really rocky. nothing gentle, not at all, just maybe the lyrics and at the end one tiny jingle of a tiny bell. "and now sleep!" :) well i'm exaggerating a bit now, but the truth is i wanted it harder with a yelling electric guitar through out, thats for sure. but then i got sober again and realized, that i'm trying to "bite a bit bigger then my mouth" and that my voice for sure will NEVER be rocky. so i returned back to the more classical arrangement of the song.
thank you very much for nice words about the bass/guitar. i will pass it on ferdasek, he will be so happy :) i'm so proud of him.
and thank you for your so cute agitation of my tune in my master posting "how to erase my song/how to erase my posting?" :) it was so lovely.

thank you! :) i am so so SO happy you like it :) it is a strange feeling to post a song. you suddenly feel naked and exposed to everyone. even more, if the first person who come across your way, isn't very much into your kind of music and gives you very low mark. i know that marking is not important at all, important is comment and reaction to your song, pleople leave on your site. it is just, that one bad mark can completely put you out of countenance. i was afraid, when i returned back from school today, to open macjams again to see, that you guys didn't like it. but you like it!!!! i am SO glad.

thank you for stopping by and leaving your nice comment. if you knew how hard it is to be living above a valley, where through the bottom of it is running six-lane highway and behind the opposite hill is an airport. i never noticed, how loud the noise is, but since we started recording, oh gosh... it is unbelievable. to get rid of the noise was almost impossible. ferdasek did all his best, i think it coudn't be better, but still it is not perfect. it can never be, in such a roar! :)
thank you for your lovely words :)

i so wish i could write so poetically and delightfully, as joseph campbell a hundred years ago. you are right, the lyrics are so sweet. i am so glad you appreciated the "treatment" we gave it with ferdasek to the song. it is strange, because after listening to it every day for many times one stops hearing things and becomes unable of judgment. i am very happy you like it. i will pass your words to my amorzinho :)

Your voice is haunting and perfect for this song. Is their such a thing as a unique note? If so, "the crickets SING..." must be one, I love it!

You've inspired me to learn this for my own wee ones.

you have to tell me, if the lullaby worked with your wee ones, ok? it did work with ferdasek because few times during the recording he dropped his head, but always shortly thanks god. he never missed his guitar entry :) i have never heard about a unique note. but if there was one, i would wish to implant it on all notes i would ever sing. yes, that would be a bliss :)
i am so happy for your words. thank you pete

Wow &mdash 07/27/07 - 05:29:28 AM

I love this. It's a lovely rendition of this lullaby,
beautifully sung and performed - a fitting and worthy tribute to your grandmother, I am certain.

That straight finger-style on the guitar is very skillfully deployed for that hypnotic quality (kinda
REM "Everybody hurts") .. fantastic solo work ferdesek btw..clean, crisp and not overdone.

I'd have liked the "shh"s at the end to be a little less breathy (very small nit) and perhaps a touch of more echo/delay on the sweet high notes of the vocal, maybe even working in some ligth orchestral strings post solo.. but this is excellent as is.

Great touch of magic in the use of those bell chimes too ;o)

It seems natural to look to the young at the passing of
the old: life's big circle.

thank you thank you thank you!!! :) i am SO happy you like it :) i have to say, that that "shhht" at the end i tried to rerecord a few times and always my face was turned 90' away from the microphone. i was not blowing into it, honestly. so i don't have a clue, why it is not perfect after all that hard work bl...dy h..l! :) the orchestral strings is a great idea. i can imagine they would fit there well. the only problem is, i think i am a little more skilled as a singer, then as a musician. i'm not sure, if i could manage it the way, that i would be proud of my self at the end, saying "this is exactly what i was hearing in my head". i think thats the biggest problem. i am limited by the instrument skills. i think i can go to a certain level and feel self confident about it, but if i tried something not familiar to me at all, i would feel like on a thin ice. but i am more then sure in the future i am going to try that thin ice. because person learns only with trying :)
thank you for mentioning the bell tree sound. if you just knew what troubles and hard work it was, to find it on the net! i was exhausted, upset, disappointed and hopeless and then, when i was feeling the worst, one "good fairy" appeared and sorted all the problems out for me. i am so grateful to her :)
alan thank you for your comment and everything. and thank you so very much for mentioning the guitar work. i agree with you, that ferdasek did a great job, without him the tune would be simply nothing. and i love that three-word description of his solo you wrote "clean, crispy and not overdone" you couldn't say it better.
thank you so much again.

Thank you for sharing Paja &mdash 07/28/07 - 04:52:14 AM
I really loved it. Listen to it alot, your voice is very special. I could hear you tried my suggestion to lessen
breathyness (which did 'work') but still sounds a little
windy on my monitors (do you have a 'pop' shield or even one of those spongy covers you see news reporters with when outdoors?)... or "shh" through a bathroom sponge might
even work.

Anyways, it was such a small nit .. I think you shouldn't
shy away from trying your ideas .. if you really don't like
the results .. you can always use the 'suggestion/idea' and
send of a mix to someone else to collaborate and help
achieve what you had in mind... I'm always fishing for
better performers to replace my 'gist of things'. :o)

Glad you liked my summary of the solo: looking at it now,
it seems inspired by the "Well Done? Medium or Rare?" thread. ;o) lol.

Not sure about "good faeries" - certainly "away with the
faeries" ;o)

You've done well to let this melody carry itself, without over ornamenting the tune... The feel that comes across to me is that you "trust the tune", and especially with Celtic music, I think that's at the heart of things...

This is a song that I had not heard before, and I like it very much. Terrific and quite 'dense' lyric, packing a lot of image into eight lines...

The playing is simple and appropriate and the singing is very nice indeed. Taken together, it reminds me of some of the old Touchstone and Relativity tunes I used to enjoy...

Good stuff...

Ed
