Description:
This slab of acid mutant swamp blues was originally intended to be something quite different but once I started adding the electric fiddle it went off in a whole other direction. Besides the fiddle the other sounds you can hear are midi bass, treated midi bass and a variously treated section from a field recording of a mosquito (which has ended up sound a bit like cicadas). I had to stop working on this for about 4 weeks owing to a ruptured eardrum and it was strange rediscovering the initial creative spark after such a lapse – the ruptured eardrum was not a result of working on this track!

field recording huh... &mdash 07/28/07 - 09:53:49 PM
I hope nothing went wrong with that endeavor. :D

But.

Wow. I don't even know what to say, except, it's aliiiiiiiiive....

Hey CJ! &mdash 08/01/07 - 05:25:54 AM
Well it's pretty alive, the fiddle was pretty much improvised in one take and then I redid a couple of short sections.

Interesting &mdash 07/29/07 - 11:36:32 AM
Very experimental, but I like it. The metallic violin has a very haunting and sparse feel and the bass keeps it moving. This is a very good track that could sit well in a cinematic film. Hope your eardrum gets better.

I know where you're coming from... &mdash 08/01/07 - 05:46:18 AM
...because I almost posted this as a cinematic track owing to it's atmosphere. Although most of what I post tends to be folky/rootsy do have an experimental noisy side - which I think is a good thing because it can help enhance the more traditionally based stuff.

Martyn &mdash 07/31/07 - 07:26:46 AM
this is awesome. I love the haunting tone that you get on the violin - very moving and unique.
I hope that your hearing is returning and that you make a full recovery.
Cheers

Thanks... &mdash 08/01/07 - 05:21:35 AM
...for listening and for your good wishes. My ear is definitely improving -leastways I can play fiddle (with the mute on) and hear stereo over my headphones. It's still not right tho' but I want to avoid going to the quack again as that might involve some surgery...aaaaggghh!

Interesting piece Martyn! &mdash 08/01/07 - 05:47:06 AM
Certainly inventive - hope the ear sorts itself out. I hear lots of creaking doors - probably not a very fiddler-friendly thing to say, but I don't mean it as a criticism. This is very atmospheric stuff (and a little spooky).

Hendrix &mdash 08/01/07 - 05:50:48 AM
Nice! I like the atmosphere... kind of of a Jimi Hendrix feel. I also like the way it plays with a slow blues feel. The ending came unexpectedly; I thought it could have kept going, possibly evolving into a more obvious (i.e., less experimental) slow blues.

I hope the ear fully recovers.

Hendrix! &mdash 08/01/07 - 06:39:53 PM
Actually this is not the first Hendrix comparison I've had - I keep meaning to have a go at Purple Haze (and I think you've spurred me on to finally do it!)

I'm often wary about letting tracks go on for too long - I don't want to sound self-indulgent. I know you successfully compose quite long pieces but I don't think I have the compositional nounce to make it work for me.

Dark and murky, the fiddle almost plays like a harmonica tone here. Feels like a jailhouse blues song in a David Lyncg movie.

Great stuff.

This reminds me of a haunting feel &mdash 08/28/07 - 08:51:40 PM
right after the civil war. Has really that dissonant that all is not right.

But you seemed to do it all right. Would make a terrific movie section with that theme in mind I think.

Way to go.

The Civil War? &mdash 09/02/07 - 03:24:36 AM
I didn't know you went that far back Bill! ;)

But seriously... as you say there's that feeling that all is not right... I actually find the track a bit creepy when I listen back to it now (and I know what's coming!)

Thanks for listening and commenting - I appreciate it.

Electrical trickery! &mdash 09/02/07 - 05:18:14 AM
I run the electric fiddle through a guitar effects unit to get those nice grungy sounds. The blues is something I venture into often when I'm jamming at home - I've got a few bluesy riffs on the fiddle (and mandolin as well) which may see the light of day on MJ at some point...

Thanks for listenin'
