This is awesome &mdash 07/28/07 - 11:42:54 PM
(a word I think is much overused, but which applies in this case!) The sound is great, and the imagery is fantastic. Nice moving rhythm, with lovely exotic touches, and great swathes of sound. The keyboards sound great, and the vocal touches are great. I love the sense of movement and wide-eyed exuberance about it. Very nice work. Downloaded and fav'd. Thanks for sharing. Peace. A great tune to start my day.... &mdash 07/29/07 - 02:54:23 AM
This was a pleasant surprise to hear.
It's so happy and so 'bring it on' I'm almost ready to Ebay-up a canoe and outboard, motor on down the Don (Sheffield's main river, we have 5) and head for a curry lunch in Calcutta.
I love this sort of mixed and melded tune. The Rhodes sound made it move for me in some strange way. Rolling came to mind.
Take care.

Fascinating &mdash 07/29/07 - 05:12:06 AM
This is very different for you, yet very evocative of some things you've done in the past like Nataraja. I enjoy the chilled out, green-island vibe of this song and think it's cool to hear you doing something less high-octane than what I've come to expect. I feel the influence of your vacation in this, David. I really love it. [ Reply to This ]
Thank you, Lisa &mdash 07/29/07 - 11:03:07 AM
Vacation was definitely an influence; I think it slowed some parts of my brain from lightspeed to a casual stroll. I've been trying to mix something with these ethnic flavors for a while, but this is the first of those mixes that I consider successful. I'm glad you love it, thank you Lisa.

break out the paddles &mdash 07/29/07 - 07:58:50 AM
I canoe a lot. A hold over from my 'scouting' days. It's as relaxing and meditative as anything I've ever done. Not to mention a great workout.
Its the very first thing that popped into my mind when I saw the songs artwork. D/L'd and primed for my next outing. Thanks.
Cool electric piano sound there, is that you banging away? [ Reply to This ]
KTB &mdash 07/29/07 - 11:16:38 AM
I completely agree about canoing; on our recent vacation to the Adirondacks, my wife and I took the canoe on the lake two or three times a day for some really beautiful and peaceful times. She snapped that photo while we were out there. (As an aside, we found 4 beaver lodges, and saw about 8 of the big rodents, which was really cool!) The electric piano, and all of the instruments, are loops, mostly from the zero-g world pack. Thank for listening, KTB, I'm glad you enjoyed this.

How often do I start a comment.... &mdash 07/29/07 - 08:30:54 PM
...with the phrase, "this reminds me...."?
Lots, I think.
THIS reminds me of back in the Seventies and Eighties when I first started getting tastes of various "world musics"... there would be this sense of catchiness and infectiousness to the music, but it would also be filled with odd little moments when the expected change didn't happen or the accent fell on an unexpected beat... or an unexpected instrument popped in or out...
And I like that. I REALLY like this. Even though it's 'loopier' than your usual... it's so 'live' and 'lively' at once... And it does have new takes on the signature perceptualvortex polyrhythms...
So new...so different... and still feels like you...
I have... this vision... of a guy juggling... on a unicycle... in a canoe...
(It WOULD be a great soundtrack to a juggling video... You know it would...)
Anyway, that's enough out of me...

Ed &mdash 07/30/07 - 02:55:00 PM
I'm honored that you should call firsties on my new tune, thanx! I like your recollection of world musics... I can relate to your description. Most of what I listen to these days could be called dance or electronic music with a very 'world' angle, so I'm kind of in the frame of mind.
I'm glad you really like this, thank you! I have dozens of songs that are going nowhere, so it was great to have this one finally come together the way I wanted it to.
Juggling in a canoe... I would only do it with props that I don't mind losing in the lake :) ...actually, I think I would also end up in the lake. If it ever happens, I'll show you the video proof.

Juggling in a canoe perhaps? &mdash 07/29/07 - 10:50:45 PM
Very cool post David - usually the percussion overwhelms (in a very good way) in your songs, but in this you've allowed more melodic things to happen (while keeping the rhythms as tight as ever). This is really great chill music - juggling in a canoe in the Arctic perhaps :)
Good stuff!!

I deliberately tried something new with the percussion... I was getting a little tired of assembling drumset tracks and wanted something more like a percussion ensemble. The Polynesian beats were good for that; I found interesting ways of layering them. Anyway, thank you! I'm glad this new approach worked for you.

There is something bugging me about this... &mdash 07/30/07 - 03:05:34 AM
....only in a good way! Heh!
What I mean is, there's this lovely 'calm' in this piece & it certainly evokes images of 'Green', but in a way that combines your inimitable style, David, incorporating a 'now' sound, but also, somehow reminding me of Martin Denny, with his rendition of 'Quiet Village'...
Nuff said- I've fallen for this! Faved & downloaded!
Many Thanks & Cheers,

Really wonderful tone and i feel the life in it.
Thanks for sharing this piece here with us ..

But great job you do

Yes, I think this makes for good music to wake up to. I know what you mean about it being Latin sounding... the percussion has a bit of that feel to it. The samples I used were mostly from Polynesia and India, so I went with the "Ethnic-International" label... but as usual, I'm never really sure how to categorize my mixes! I'm very glad you enjoyed this, Yeman, thanks for checking it out.

D D D David!... &mdash 07/30/07 - 01:50:02 PM
Welcome back!
And this time, you have confirmed that yes, music can be good to my tummy - For some reason, that's where this one danced a tastey vibe!
Certainly chilln', aren't we... Might this be the result of the the big PV, get-a-way in upper Planet York...
Me and a canoe... - I don't swim so well, so I tend to stay away from thoughts of things that can take me down and under before I can renew my religeous status... -
But if I hadda...
Certainly, it's working on dry land -
Amazing - although it's definetly chilled, it still sounds like an almost well caged huge wild winged, PV thing - Almost...
You seem to always find new and groovn' ways to travel. Diggn' it!!!, my friend - Thanks for sharing the ride - Very well charted...

Thanks man, sorry I've been so absent. It's strange and mysterious how life can sometimes interfere with MacJams. Getting a comment from Macca is as good a welcome back as any, thanks!!
Yeah, I think the getaway had some influence over my aesthetics. And anyway I've always hoped to mix a song like this--a loose grooving, Asian vibe--but seem to keep failing at it. This is the first one that seemed to come together the way I like it. It probably helps that I took a big break from trying to mix anything!
I'll tellya, there was never any danger of falling out of that canoe. Of course, we know better than to stand up in one, haha. I assure you, if you'd been there you would have been out there paddling around after, say, day two. And depending on which religion you choose, you could be able to renew your status right there between "oh, shit!" and *splash!* But of course that wouldn't happen.
Or would it...?
No. It wouldn't.
I'm glad you enjoyed the ride, man, always great to hear from you.

Very crunchy! &mdash 07/31/07 - 06:54:44 PM
I enjoy the layering of timbres and textures here. A couple of the female vocal & flute lines don't exactly 'match-up' to my western ears, but otherwise, I really like your choices of percussion instruments and instruments. [ Reply to This ]
Kristine &mdash 08/01/07 - 06:07:02 PM
Thanks for listening to this, Kristy! I'm glad you liked the weird instrumentation I wound up using. I'm curious if you are thinking those vocal and flute lines don't match up as in harmonically dissonant, or just didn't like the combination.
